Appendix 1 This Appendix documents what we know about. 1 Chronicles 6:31-47 shows that the Gershonite served as one of the three men in charge of the music at the tabernacle the Tent of Meeting. It also show that 's father was Berekiah. The other two men in charge of the music were the Kohathite (the grson of Samuel) who was the chief Ethan the Merarite, who was also called. [1] Each of these three men represented one of the three sons of Levi. [2] 1 Chronicles 6:31-47 These are the men David put in charge of the music in the house of the LORD after the ark came to rest there. They ministered with music before the tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting, until Solomon built the temple of the LORD in Jerusalem. They performed their duties according to the regulations laid down for them. 2 bring the Ark up to Jerusalem. It also tells us that Zechariah was his next in rank. From this passage we know that Zechariah was it least his close relative, probably his brother. Their father Berekiah was the doorkeeper at the Ark. Finally, we learn that was stationed at Jerusalem with the Ark, while were stationed at Gibeon with the Tabernacle. Again, the pertinent passage is below. 1 Chronicles 15:1-28 After David had constructed buildings for himself in the City of David, he prepared a place for the ark of God pitched a tent for it. Then David said, "No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the LORD chose them to carry the ark of the LORD to minister before him forever." David assembled all Israel in Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the LORD to the place he had prepared for it. He called together the descendants of Aaron the Levites: From the descendants of Kohath, Uriel the leader 120 relatives; from the descendants of Merari, Asaiah the leader 220 relatives; from the descendants of Gershon, Joel the leader 130 relatives ; from the descendants of Elizaphan, Shemaiah the leader 200 relatives; from the descendants of Hebron, Eliel the leader 80 relatives; from the descendants of Uzziel, Amminadab the leader 112 relatives. Then David summoned Zadok Abiathar the priests, Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel Amminadab the Levites. He said to them, "You are the heads of the Levitical families; you your fellow Levites are to consecrate yourselves bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it. It was because you, the Levites, did not bring it up the first time that the LORD our God broke out in anger against us. We did not inquire of him about how to do it in the prescribed way." So the priests Levites consecrated themselves in order to bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel. And the Levites carried the ark of God with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commed in accordance with the word of the LORD. David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their brothers as singers to sing joyful songs, accompanied by musical instruments: lyres, harps cymbals. So the Levites appointed son of Joel; from his brothers, son of Berekiah; from their brothers the Merarites, Ethan son of Kushaiah; with them their brothers next in rank: Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom Jeiel, the gatekeepers. The musicians, 2 / 7
Ethan were to sound the bronze cymbals; Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah Benaiah were to play the lyres according to alamoth, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, Jeiel Azaziah were to play the harps, directing according to sheminith. Kenaniah the head Levite was in charge of the singing; that was his responsibility because he was skillful at it. Berekiah Elkanah were to be doorkeepers for the ark. Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah Eliezer the priests were to blow trumpets before the ark of God. Obed-Edom Jehiah were also to be doorkeepers for the ark. So David the elders of Israel the commers of units of a thous went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from the house of Obed-Edom, with rejoicing. Because God had helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD, seven bulls seven rams were sacrificed. Now David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, as were the singers, Kenaniah, who was in charge of the singing of the choirs. David also wore a linen ephod. So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouts, with the sounding of rams' horns trumpets, of cymbals, the playing of lyres harps. As the ark of the covenant of the LORD was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David dancing celebrating, she despised him in her heart. They brought the ark of God set it inside the tent that David had pitched for it, they presented burnt offerings fellowship offerings before God. After David had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD. Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates a cake of raisins to each Israelite man woman. He appointed some of the Levites to minister before the ark of the LORD, to make petition, to give thanks, to praise the LORD, the God of Israel: was the chief, Zechariah second, then Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom Jeiel. They were to play the lyres harps, was to sound the cymbals, Benaiah Jahaziel the priests were to blow the trumpets regularly before the ark of the covenant of God. That day David first committed to his associates this psalm of thanks to the LORD: a Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice. Look to the LORD his strength; seek his face always. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, the judgments he pronounced, [3] O descendants of Israel his servant, O sons of Jacob, his chosen ones. He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth. He remembers his covenant forever, the word he commed, for a thous generations, the covenant he made with Abraham, the oath he 3 / 7
swore to Isaac. He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant: "To you I will give the l of Canaan as the portion you will inherit." When they were but few in number, few indeed, strangers in it, they wered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another. He allowed no man to oppress them; for their sake he rebuked kings: "Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no harm." Sing to the LORD, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. For great is the LORD most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. Splendor majesty are before him; strength joy in his dwelling place. Ascribe to the LORD, O families of nations, ascribe to the LORD glory strength, ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name. Bring an offering come before him; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness. Tremble before him, all the earth! The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved. Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let them say among the nations, "The LORD reigns!" Let the sea resound, all that is in it; let the fields be jubilant, everything in them! Then the trees of the forest will sing, they will sing for joy before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. Cry out, "Save us, O God our Savior; gather us deliver us from the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name, that we may glory in your praise." Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Then all the people said "Amen" "Praise the LORD." David left his associates before the ark of the covenant of the LORD to minister there regularly, according to each day's requirements. He also left Obed-Edom his sixty-eight associates to minister with them. Obed-Edom son of, also Hosah, were gatekeepers. David left Zadok the priest his fellow priests before the tabernacle of the LORD at the high place in Gibeon to present burnt offerings to the LORD on the altar of burnt offering regularly, morning evening, in accordance with everything written in the Law of the LORD, which he had given Israel. With them were the rest of those chosen designated by name to give thanks to the LORD, "for his love endures forever." were responsible for the sounding of the trumpets cymbals for the playing of the other instruments for sacred song. The sons of were stationed at the gate. Then all the people left, each for his own home, David returned home to bless his family. 1 Chronicles 25:1-7 shows how some years later the sons had raised were set apart for the ministry of prophesying or teaching under the supervision of their father who also taught under the supervision of David. 4 / 7
1 Chronicles 25:1-7 David, together with the commers of the army, set apart some of the sons of, for the ministry of prophesying, accompanied by harps, lyres cymbals. Here is the list of the men who performed this service: From the sons of : Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah Asarelah. The sons of were under the supervision of, who prophesied under the king's supervision. As for, from his sons: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah Mattithiah, six in all, under the supervision of their father, who prophesied, using the harp in thanking praising the LORD. As for, from his sons: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shubael Jerimoth; Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti Romamti-Ezer; Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir Mahazioth. All these were sons of the king's seer. They were given him through the promises of God to exalt him. God gave fourteen sons three daughters. All these men were under the supervision of their fathers for the music of the temple of the LORD, with cymbals, lyres harps, for the ministry at the house of God., were under the supervision of the king. Along with their relatives --all of them trained skilled in music for the LORD--they numbered 288. We know that at the beginning of the Temple worship in 963 BC was in the same position: 2 Chronicles 5:1-14 When all the work Solomon had done for the temple of the LORD was finished, he brought in the things his father David had dedicated--the silver gold all the furnishings-- he placed them in the treasuries of God's temple. : Then Solomon summoned to Jerusalem the elders of Israel, all the heads of the tribes the chiefs of the Israelite families, to bring up the ark of the LORD's covenant from Zion, the City of David. 5 / 7
And all the men of Israel came together to the king at the time of the festival in the seventh month. When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the Levites took up the ark, they brought up the ark the Tent of Meeting all the sacred furnishings in it. The priests, who were Levites, carried them up; King Solomon the entire assembly of Israel that had gathered about him were before the ark, sacrificing so many sheep cattle that they could not be recorded or counted. The priests then brought the ark of the LORD's covenant to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple, the Most Holy Place, put it beneath the wings of the cherubim. The cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark covered the ark its carrying poles. These poles were so long that their ends, extending from the ark, could be seen from in front of the inner sanctuary, but not from outside the Holy Place; they are still there today. There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets that Moses had placed in it at Horeb, where the LORD made a covenant with the Israelites after they came out of Egypt. The priests then withdrew from the Holy Place. All the priests who were there had consecrated themselves, regardless of their divisions. All the Levites who were musicians--,, an d their sons relatives --stood on the east side of the altar, dressed in fine linen playing cymbals, harps lyres. They were accompanied by 120 priests sounding trumpets. The trumpeters singers joined in unison, as with one voice, to give praise thanks to the LORD. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals other instruments, they raised their voices in praise to the LORD sang: "He is good; his love endures forever." Then the temple of the LORD was filled with a cloud, the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the temple of God. We know from the contents of the Psalms of that survived at least until after the breakup of the Kingdom the invasion of Shishak with the attendant devastation of the Temple: [1] Two Psalms were written by Ethan the Ezrahite (Psalm 89) the Ezrahite (Psalm 88). They were not the men who were associates of. (See Appendix 5) They were contemporaries of Solomon who were both Ezrahites sons of Mahol. (1 Kings 4:31) [2] Geneis 46:11 6 / 7
a This first pat of this Psalm as carried in 1 Chronicles 16:8-22 is identical with Psalm 105:1-15. In Psalm 105 it is unascribed. [3] returns to this theme repeatedly. Psalms 77:11, Psalms 78: / 7
