Youth & Discipleship International Assistant Director Leading When Not in Charge Janet and I have served in full time ministry for over 29 years in a variety of capacities: Local Church (Staff) Pastor - 10 years State\Regional Director - 15 years International Youth Ministries Coordinator - 4 years International Assistant Director - Present Each role allowed us to lead from the middle. 1

2 The demand for leadership has increased in recent years as churches have become more complex, and the increased demand for servant leaders, coupled with the demand for accountability, requires leadership skills at all levels. Leadership is not a solo performance. Individuals must be strong in their own rights, able to make effective decisions, think strategically, and act decisively. Individuals lead at all levels of an organization, but how do people lead when they are not in charge? Middle leaders can effect change and advance an organization s work by using informal leadership, drawing on a variety of skills. What is Leadership? "Leadership is Influence!" John C. Maxwell "Leadership empowers, motivates, and organizes people to achieve a common objective, and provides moral guidance. It is a service to the people and a vision for the future." Charles Barron 2

6 4 Types of Power in the Workplace By Peter A. Land Positional Power comes from your position (title) in the formal hierarchy of your company. Positional power used to work reasonably well, but today, every time we lean heavily on the because I said so option, there is always unwanted collateral damage to the relationship with your colleagues. Positional power should be minimized and understated. It only guarantees the job will get done to the absolutely lowest standard. Coercive Power is the power to punish or to dole out negative consequences. Example United States and Russia during Cold War. Expert Power is the power behind special knowledge or skills one possesses. Personal Power exists in the eye of the beholder. You have personal power if, and only if, the other party perceives that you do! When you are perceived as a person of character, integrity, honesty, selfless passion for the company and as someone who can be trusted at all times, under all circumstances - then you will have personal power. L.E.A.D.E.R.S.H.I.P Habits! 6

7 L - Learn All leaders are learners. When you cease to learn, you cease to lead. Anything that is not growing is dying. E - Engage A leader will be able to influence followers only in proportion to how much he or she engages them on an emotional level. Engage people in four ways (1) a consistent ethic, (2) a contagious enthusiasm, (3) a course of excellence, and (4) continual empowerment. 7

8 A - Anticipate Leaders are always asking two questions: "What happens next?" and "What happens after what happens next?" Although no one can predict THE future, effective leaders constantly anticipate possible futures. D - Demonstrate Leaders model for followers the qualities required for success. Demonstrate integrity, innovation and intelligence. You attract what you reflect, but you reproduce what you are. 8

9 E - Evolve Leaders never stop growing. Realize that you are on a journey that requires the conquering of many mountains. Yesterday's approaches, attitudes and attributes do not always help in today's climate. The heights that a leader obtains are directly proportional to the level to which they evolve. Stop changing and you die. R - Reproduce Leaders reproduce other leaders. A leader's successors determine his success. 9

10 S - Solve One of the great works of leadership is problem solving. While problem solving is not the sole work of leadership, it is a defining characteristic. Your ability to successfully solve problems will determine your stability. H - Hope Your actions will inspire hope in your followers. You have the unique ability to communicate hope in all that they do. Napoleon rightly quipped, "A leader is a dealer in hope." Hope without vision is aimless wandering. 10

11 I - Initiate Leaders take action, they initiate, invent, adapt and improvise. An indecisive person will seldom be a good leader. P Persevere When seized by a vision, never give up! They persevere until completion. Samuel Johnson writes, "Great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance." 11

13 Discussing Helping You is Killing Me! v An armorbearer is called serve another v If you can t handle a lack of praise because you desire the limelight, your in the wrong place. v It takes a greater man to make another man great v Leaders never surround yourself with YES men. Discussing Helping You is Killing Me! v Comparison between Armorbearer and a pallbearer. v The armorbearer must continue to grow spiritually in proportion to his leader. v One of the reasons pastors quit, grow weary or fail is the lack of prayed up men and women around them. v Familiarity is an evil spirit. 13

14 Discussing Helping You is Killing Me! v How does a middle leader continue to serve faithfully when the brook dries up. v Communication is a key ingredient to serving your leader. v It takes a greater man to make another man great. v Learn to balance your calling Take care of your family. Discussing Helping You is Killing Me! v Handling blessing of your leader. v Jekyll & Hyde syndrome v How you exit is as important as how you enter ministry. v Danger of a harden heart. v Being faithful to God in the little things will allow God to honor you in the great. 14
