1 BHIS 346 Bible Backgrounds Fall, 2007, HUE Course Description: BHIS 346. Bible Backgrounds. (2 or 3) Offered only in the Harding University European Studies curriculum. A study in Bible backgrounds utilizing the great museums and libraries of Europe (such as the British Museum, Louvre and Vatican). Classroom work coupled with research in the biblical collections of European museums and libraries. Instructor: Daniel C. Tullos, Ph.D., CCC-SLP Texts: Mitchell, T. C. (2004). The Bible in the British Museum: Interpreting the evidence, New York: Paulist Press (ISBN: ) Bible (any translation) Objectives: Upon completion of this course students will: 1. Understand the cultural background of the writing of the Bible, 2. Understand the connection between some archaeological discoveries and Biblical writings. 3. Have such vivid memory of some of the more important holdings in the British Museum and that future Bible study will forever be enriched. Student Expectations: 1. Students will attend and participate in all classes. 2. Students will read assignments prior to class and participate in class discussions. 3. Each student will spend a minimum of 2 hours each week doing research in the British Museum and/or the and submit a completed research time log on the day of the Final Exam. 4. Each student will complete a Museum/Library Report Form for each artifact or object researched and a two-page summary of the weeks assignments. 5. All written work will be graded for content, as well as for spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc. Grading: 1. Research Reports 700 (100 each) 2. Mid-semester Exam Semester Exam 200 Class Structure: The first class period each week will concentrate on reviewing the course syllabus and expectations. The remaining classes will involve a combination of class meeting time and individual research at the British Museum and Library.

8 Assignment 7: Culture and Times of the New Testament (0 500 AD) Choose ten artifacts that help to describe the culture and times of New Testament cities and places. You may choose only one city, or you may choose a combination of cities and places. On the second day students will go to the British Museum and research the city/place of your choice; complete a research form on each artifact, and then write a two-page paper, typed and double spaced, on the culture/times of the city/place researched. At least one additional hour of research time per week is expected (1 class meeting and 2 hours of independent research). The paper is to be turned in at the next class meeting.
