The Kosher Community Survey process is all about providing a good mechanism for kosher consumers to provide feedback to kosher establishments. The tradition continues with the results of this year s Baltimore survey. The Baltimore community response for this effort was commendable with 325 participants. Interest in the survey by Baltimore kosher consumers continues to grow as the community learns about the survey process. This year marks the launch of the Partners in Customer Feedback program in Baltimore. This initiative provides kosher establishments an additional opportunity to demonstrate their interest in customer feedback. Check out this year s participating establishments on page 5. 6 Partners in Customer Feedback Kosher Community Surveys started a new initiative this year, called the Partners in Customer Feedback Program (PICF), where kosher establishments can demonstrate their commitment to customer feedback. The following text describes the general requirements for each of the three levels of recognition: Bronze: Indicates a general interest in obtaining feedback from customers. Silver: Posts a flyer for 2 weeks in the establishment regarding the KCS kosher survey (or equivalent activity). Gold: Includes an individualized announcement about the KCS kosher survey (e.g., customer or hard copy newsletter/mailed flyer). Kosher Community Surveys is pleased to award 2008 PICF recognition to the following establishments:! Gold! Goldman s Silver Goldberg s New York Bagels Accents Grill Cocoaccinos Goldman s Bronze Subway (Reiserstown) Tov Pizza Knish Shop MeLatte David Chu s Schmell & Azman Wasserman & Lemberger The following establishments did not respond to Kosher Community Surveys LLC about the PICF program: Eden Café. Amanda s, Shlomo s Kosher Meat Market, 7 Mile Market, Caramels, KosherBite/KB Szechuan, Mama Leah s, Milk and Honey Bistro, Royal Restaurant, Sion Bakery, Pariser s, and Dunkin Donuts. 7 Seven Mile Market Service quality 12% 22% 40% 20% 6% (Cleanliness/layout) Selection of merchandise 17% 29% 31% 16% 6% 2% 5% 23% 43% 28% Complete Survey Results: Stores/Butchers Quality of fresh & prepared foods 6% 17% 37% 29% 11% Price 12% 25% 32% 25% 6% Number of respondents for this store: 269 Seven Mile Market s main attraction, according to customers, is the broad selection of products and the potential to buy all one s grocery needs under one roof. Even so, many customers mentioned that they still needed to go shopping at other places to complete their shopping. Some patrons noted improvements in customer service this year, but still qualified their comments with an indication that further measures were needed. Major areas in need of improvement are: (1) cleanliness, (2) eliminating spoiled foods (across a range of departments), and (3) barring employees use of inappropriate language toward customers. Page 6 of 33
8 Shlomo's Kosher Meat Market Wasserman & Lemberger Service quality 1% 9% 25% 36% 30% Service quality 2% 5% 14% 37% 42% (Cleanliness/layout) 4% 17% 35% 28% 16% (Cleanliness/layout) 2% 8% 35% 38% 17% Selection of merchandise 1% 10% 32% 32% 25% Selection of merchandise 1% 3% 6% 43% 47% Quality of fresh & prepared foods 2% 7% 19% 35% 37% Quality of fresh & prepared foods 1% 2% 5% 29% 63% Price 4% 9% 33% 39% 15% Number of respondents for this store: 101 Customers of Shlomo s Kosher Meat Market offered positive comments related to staff and service. The staff is described as helpful and knowledgeable, and happy to respond to special requests. At the same time, service is said to be slow and the store is bit disorganized. Patrons also expressed appreciation for the delivery service, and they also recommended the chicken strips as a recommended product, particularly because of the good price. One area of improvement is to address customers frustration in not being provided with a menu of available items with prices and not seeing the items in the display cases. Price 5% 14% 29% 43% 9% Number of respondents for this store: 177 Wasserman & Lemberger is described by local consumers as having the best meat in Baltimore. The meat is described as high quality and fresh. The deli is also seen as excellent (albeit pricey). Zalman is also singled out for specific kudos. Employees received mixed written comments some customers find the staff to be knowledgeable, helpful, offering good, friendly service, while others indicate less than ideal interactions with staff. Despite the quality of the meat, long lines and extended times to pick up food deters people from shopping here. People can also be frustrated when their phoned-in orders are not ready at the agreed upon time. Customers would also appreciate a menu listing the full selection of available items and prices. In addition, there are some comments about a lack of sanitary procedures by the staff. Page 7 of 33
9 Accents Grill on the Atrium Poor Fair Good V.Good Excellent Food quality 1% 3% 10% 40% 45% Complete Survey Results: Restaurants Melatte did not receive enough surveys to have its survey information listed. Service quality 5% 10% 19% 43% 23% 1% 6% 24% 42% 27% Value 8% 13% 31% 32% 16% Number of respondents for this store: 221 Accents Grill on the Atrium receives positive comments regarding the consistent quality of its food. Service is also generally described as good and responsive. That being said, some customers suggest that the establishment consider full wait service. Customers would also appreciate improvements in the ordering process to make the experience more efficient (and less frustrating). Most negative comments about Accents focused on the Atrium. That environment is not considered to be very pleasing; it feels crowded, and there are often temperature control issues in the winter and summer. Page 8 of 33
10 Amanda s Caramels Poor Fair Good V.Good Excellent Food quality 3% 6% 18% 43% 30% Service quality 14% 14% 18% 34% 21% 1% 3% 9% 33% 54% Value 24% 34% 20% 18% 4% Number of respondents for this store: 126 Amanda s, Baltimore s main white tablecloth establishment, is compared by customers to the previous restaurant at the same location, Brasserie. Some express the opinion that the establishment is better now, while most indicate that quality is about the same. Customers like the menu selection at Amanda s and find the food of good quality. The sushi receives particularly good comments. The ambiance is seen as satisfactory and clean. At the same time, patrons complain that some dishes offer portions that are very small. Service is described as being in need of improvement, particularly with respect to speed. Some customers compare Amanda s to similar New York establishments and conclude that this establishment is pricier, but not as good. Food quality 9% 16% 29% 35% 12% Service quality 12% 19% 38% 23% 9% 15% 32% 37% 10% 7% Value 8% 14% 41% 31% 6% Number of respondents for this store: 104 The written comments for Caramels focus on areas of improvement. Customers feel that this establishment is understaffed service is too slow and people wait a long time, even for a single slice of pizza. Staff can get overwhelmed. The décor could use refreshing and the place itself should be cleaned more effectively, customers say. With regard to the food itself, people indicate that the pizza is good quality. At the same time, a number of patrons question the freshness of food (i.e., food tasted as if cooked items had been reheated). Page 9 of 33
11 Cocoaccinos David Chu's China Bistro Food quality 6% 5% 18% 43% 29% Service quality 6% 6% 27% 40% 22% Food quality 1% 5% 13% 34% 47% Service quality 2% 3% 11% 40% 44% 3% 2% 19% 49% 28% (Cleanliness/ 1% 2% 12% 41% 45% Value 10% 17% 35% 24% 15% Number of respondents for this store: 163 Cocoaccinos, the sister restaurant to Accents on the Atrium, is one establishment where written comments are more critical overall than the numerical scores. Positive comments mentioned good tasting food and positive experiences with the attitude of staff. Comments regarding the eating area are similar to Accents it is not considered a comfortable area, as it can get noisy and crowded as well as very cold. Customers request that the establishment consider adding more options to its currently limited menu, extending the time that breakfast foods are available and adding some additional evening hours. Speed of ordering and service needs to be improved as well, customers noted. Value 2% 7% 19% 39% 34% Number of respondents for this store: 233 David Chu s is described as providing the best Chinese food in the Baltimore area. While most people indicate that the restaurant consistently provides good food, there are others who describe the food as inconsistent. Some customers feel that quality decreased this year. David Chu s employees are described as professional and pleasant. Even so, there are some diners who felt rushed by wait staff. In terms of environment, patrons find that the dining room can become tight at peak times. Some consumers request that the establishment consider some more healthy and vegetarian items. Page 10 of 33
12 Eden Cafe (Park Heights JCC) Eden Cafe (Owings Mills JCC) Food quality 2% 10% 28% 41% 19% Service quality 9% 15% 29% 32% 15% Food quality 0% 8% 31% 41% 20% Service quality 6% 8% 30% 42% 14% 2% 3% 15% 38% 42% 0% 0% 18% 45% 37% Value 3% 9% 31% 38% 19% Number of respondents for this store: 150 The Eden Café receives positive comments in a number of areas. Patrons specify the falafel and pizza as good tasting dishes. Customers enjoy the pleasant ambiance of this restaurant as well as the friendly staff. At the same time, customers request improvement in the speed of service as well as an increased selection on the menu. People overall liked the new physical space that is roomier than the previous location. Even so, the new location itself is not preferred because parking is difficult. Bagel items on the menu receive high marks from customers, and patrons like the breadth of selection on the menu. The staff is described as non-friendly and sometimes rude. Customers would like to see an improved ordering system, which is currently confusing at times and inefficient. Even with a new location, unfortunately, patrons still remark that the establishment needs to be cleaned more often. Value 5% 15% 23% 30% 26% Number of respondents for this store: 134 The Knish Shop received mixed written comments about the establishment s food quality and employee attitude/service. Customers remark that prices have gone up this year. Patrons also observe that the Knish Shop is not very comfortable to eat in due to its small size. Page 12 of 33

The main reason to patronize this restaurant is that it can offer good value, customers indicate. People recommend the shwarma and burgers. The food is fast-food style with many people describing it as greasy. While some patrons have pleasant interaction with staff, most customers written comments indicate negative experiences. Consumers still describe the restaurant as dirty in the main dining area and the bathroom. Patrons have hit-or-miss experience in terms of getting good food, with lack of freshness being a problem.
