3 For the first time Christ was about to give life to the dead. As the Prince of life and the shining ones approached the grave, Satan was alarmed for his supremacy. With his evil angels he stood to dispute an invasion of the territory that he claimed as his own. He boasted that the servant of God had become his prisoner. He declared that even Moses was not able to keep the law of God; that he had taken to himself the glory due to Jehovah the very sin which had caused Satan s banishment from heaven and by transgression had come under the dominion of Satan. 4 Moses passed through death, but Michael came down and gave him life before his body had seen corruption. Satan tried to hold the body, claiming it as his; but Michael resurrected Moses and took him to heaven. Satan railed bitterly against God, denouncing Him as unjust in permitting his prey to be taken from him; but Christ did not rebuke His adversary, though it was through his temptation that the servant of God had fallen. He meekly referred him to His Father, saying, The Lord rebuke thee. (EW 164.2) 4

5 Jesus had told His disciples that there were some standing with Him who should not taste of death till they should see the kingdom of God come with power. At the transfiguration this promise was fulfilled. The countenance of Jesus was there changed and shone like the sun. His raiment was white and glistening. Moses was present to represent those who will be raised from the dead at the second appearing of Jesus. And Elijah, who was translated without seeing death, represented those who will be changed to immortality at Christ s second coming and will be translated to heaven without seeing death. 8 1872 Principle: That out of this prison house of the grave mankind are to be brought by a bodily resurrection; the righteous having part in the first resurrection, which takes place at the second advent of Christ, the wicked in the second resurrection, which takes place a thousand years thereafter. Rev. 20:4 6. 8

9 2015 When Christ, who is our life, appears, the resurrected righteous and the living righteous will be glorified and caught up to meet their Lord. The second resurrection, the resurrection of the unrighteous, will take place a thousand years later. (Job 19:25 27; Dan. 12:2; John 5:28, 29; 1 Cor. 15:51, 52; 1 Thess. 4:16, 17; Rev. 20:5, 6.) 9

10 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that you sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. (1 Thessalonians 4:13) 10

11 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first. Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17) 11

12 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. (John 5:28, 29) 12

13 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. (Revelation 20:6.) 13

15 These three sects agreed in the fundamental principles of the Jewish religion, but, at the same time, they were involved in endless disputes. A main point of contention was whether the written law alone was the divine authority, for the Pharisees added to the law oral traditions. This the Sadducees and Essenes rejected. 15

16 They differed also in their opinions concerning the understanding of the law. The Pharisees attributed to the sacred text a double sense, one obvious and the other mystical and mysterious (Kabbalah). The Sadducees maintained only what the literal words said, and the Essenes accepted as sacred only the images the words portrayed and rejected the literal words from having any significance. 16

17 But these differences overshadowed a greater controversy that of eternal rewards and punishments. The Pharisees believed in a resurrection, at which time rewards and punishments were to be executed. The Sadducees believed rewards and punishments were meted in this life only, and the Essenes differed from them both. (See John Mosheim, Ecclesiastical History, p. 7 ff.) 17

18 Paul and the resurrection But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question. And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided. For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both. And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God. (Acts 23:6 9; see 26:8) 18

19 And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust....touching the resurrection of the dead I am called in question by you this day. (Acts 24:15, 21) 19
