2 FATHER'S DAY BIBLE BASIS Ephesians 6:1 LESSON AIM That the child will understand that he shows his love for his father by obeying him. SCRIPTURE INSIGHT The father's role in the family is crucial, for he is a picture of God; and in his relationship to his wife and chilclren, there should be found a reflection of God's relationship to His children. Today we concentrate on the lesson of obedience as Scripture often admonishes children to obey their parents in the Lord. The Old and New Testaments are filled with stories of obedience and disobedience, and just as a child should obey his earthly father, so should we Qbey our Heavenly Father. Obedience is so important to the Christian that nothing can be substituted in its place (I Samue115:22). Jesus went so far as to tell His disciples that love for Him hinges on obedience Uohn 14:15)and in his first epistle, John wrote: ''This is love for God: to obey his commands" (I John 5:3). Like children, we find obedience to God and His commands very difficult because of our strong wills and desire to run our own lives. We know from Scripture, however, that obedience is not optional, but required, and as we learn to obey God, we will discover that the rewards are manifold. (Deuteronomy 11:26-27). GREETING Greet each child this morning by showing him a picture of your father or a picture of your family including the husband. Have the following conversation: "Good morning, (chilcrs name). Today is Father's Day and 1 brought a picture to show you. This is my father. I love him so much. I'm glad God gave us daddies." If you are using a family picture, you will say the following: "This is daddy. These are his children. We love him so much." If the child brought a picture of his dad, guide him to Center #1. 1. "What Would You Do?" CENTER TIME T/u' purpose {~(this ((,Jltfr is to hal'('-th(' child relate obedience and respect with Daddy. Draw five orsix squares large enough for each child to be able to set his picture. You can write "Daddy" in the square. 3 , Cutout six paper dolls so each child will have one. You'will also need a paperdoll "Daddy" in case a child did not bring a picture of his daddy. ' Have the children place their pictures in their square. Then open your Bible and begin by telling the children that the Bible says to obey our moms and dads. That means when Dad tells you to do something, you should 'mind him. ' Have the following conversation:,. (Child's name), please put your dad and your paperdoll in the circle. Let's pretend that you are the paperdoll. If your father says,, (child's name), pick up your toys, please: what would you do?" (After the child answers - "obey" - have him move the paperdoll to the appropriate picture.) Repeat this procedure with each of the pictures allowing the children to take turns. (1) car - "Please get into the car." (2) house - "Please' come into the house for dinner." (3) sister or brother - "Please tell your sister (brother) you are sorry you hurt her feelings." (4) toys - "Please pick up your toys." (5) bed - "Please come to bed;" 'Have a prayer at the end of this activity asking Jesus to help each child at the table obey his father. 2. "Yes, Sir, Daddy!" The purpose of this activity is to Iwve the children'respond to your requests with a 'yes, sir': (Younger children can do the actions involved in the center. It will not be necessary for them to say "yes, sir.") If you have a man teaching in your room; he may want to do this center. ', The teacher in charge of this center will sit in a chair beside the table. She should have collected the following items and spread them out on the table: a newspaper, a shoe shine brush, a tie; a wallet, car keys and a children's book., Have'the children sit down on, the floor in front of you~you may want to use place mats or carpet squares on which to sit. The teacher will begin by using the following conversation: "The Bible says thiifwe should obey our daddies. Listen carefully because I am going to ask each of you to do something. Then I want you to say," Yes, sir" and do it. "would you get my wallet please? I need to go to work." (Guide the child to the table to find the wallet.) ''Thank you for obeying! God is happy when we obey our fathers. Does your daddy have a wallet? Daddies are special!" Repeat the above conversation with each of the items on your table: (1) newspaper - for Daddy to read (2) shoe shine brush - for the child to shine your shoes (3) tie - for the child to dress you for church (place around your neck) (4) car keys - for daddy to go to work (5) child's book - for daddy to read to child 3. Daddies On A Bus The purpose of this center is to let the children dress as Daddies and pretend to go to work. Younger children will enjoy this center if they enjoy dressing up. You will need to demonstrate by dressing up first. You may have better success letting one child at a time dress up and guide the others to applaud for him as you thank God for Mr. (child's last name). ", Have four or five ties, some caps or hats, some suit coats (if possible), a folded page from a newspaper for each child, men's shoes and anything used you can gather together that would remind the children of daddies. You will need to help the children dress. Place five or six chairs side by side like a bus. When all the "daddies" are ready for work, the bus driver (who should be the teacher) tells all the daddies to get on the bus. It's time for work. You can seat each daddy as you call him by his name. Conversation: "Good morning, Mr. (child's last name)!how are you today?" After you have seated the daddies, 'remind the children (as you admire them as a group) how glad you are that God made daddies. Youwill want to sing the following song and you pretend to drive: (Youwill need to drive facing the children.) This song can be repeated for each child. *To the tune of "Mary Had A Little Lamb" Thank you, God for Mr. (child's last name) Mr., Mr. _ Thank you, God, for Mr., Oh, we love him so.

"\\'hcn:';o, The Daddy?" The pwpose 4 this center is to engage the child in an activity that requires him to recognize a doddy U'hile you thank God for his Daddy.. Tape five half sheets of construction paper to a sheet of butcher paper. Under three flaps, place a magazine or catalog picture of a man. Under two flaps, pla<::ea picture of a woman. As each child comes to you, have the following conversation: " (Chil{r~ name), cal) you find a daddy? Is that a daddy? No, that's a mommy! (Youwill need to lift up the mommy flap.) (Child's name) has a daddy. Thank you, God, for (child's name) 's daddy." Repeat above actions and conversation with each child that approaches your center. From time to time you may need to attract the children's attention by exclaiming, "Look what I have under these naps!" Don't v-raitfor younger children to come to you before you teach them. Often they need to be coaxed. 2. Daddies In A Box Place five or six pictures of men in a shoe box. Draw five circles on the butcher paper covering your table.. Attract the children's attention by shaking the box. Conversation: "I have something in my box!'" (Set the box on the table and let one child at a time reach into the box and pick out a daddy. Guide the children in placing the daddies in a circle.) " (Child's name) has a daddy. Thank you, God, for (child', '''''')C'' 's daddy." Let the children put the daddies back into the box and begin again. You may want to let one of the children shake the box. You will need to put a lot of enthusiasm into shaking the box in order to keep the children's attention. ' 3. I'm My Daddy Bring a tie, a hat, a man's shoes and a coat. You will also need a mirror. Usually, if one child will dress up, others will follow.after the child has put on some" Daddy" clothing, place a full length mirror or a hand mirror before him and have the conversation: "Look at (child's name)! He looks like a daddy. Daddies are so nice. Thank you, God, for daddies. Can you say, ' Day?'" Repeat the dressing up activity and the conversation with the children that participate. If the children cia not \vant to dress up, use the same conversation. 1. Supplies Needed STORY TIME Bible: men's shoes; ties; a coat; a shoeshine brush; a steering wheel; a newspaper; a man's robe; house shoes; a picture of your father or your husband and yoqr family. 2. Preparation For Story Ease the children to your storycircle by singing your transition song. Once the children are seated, sing "Where is t', act out monthly action rhyme, say monthly Bible verses and begin story with prayer. "Dear God, thank you, for my daddy. In Jesus name, Amen." *BIBLE LEADER - The Bible says, "Obey Mommy and Daddy." Ephesians 6:1. 3. Outline For Story If you have a man teacher in your room, let him sit in the chair up front while you tell the story. You'will put a tie on him, etc. He will respond as you tell the story. You will tell the story from a chair. Youwill need to keep your props near you in the order they will be needed in the story.

5 "Did you know that God gives us daddies! Thank you, God." "Today is Daddies Day. Here is a picture of my daddy." (Or a picture of the daddy in your family. If you are using a man teacher, you would say, "Here is a daddy.''' "We love him so much." (Or his children love him so much.), "In the mornings, our Daddy goes to work. He puts on a tie (or coat). He puts on his shoes. But sometimes Daddy can only find one shoe. He says, 'Please help me find my shoe. You should mind Daddy and'help him. Sometimes Daddy's shoes are dirty. Daddy cleans his shoes with a brush." (Put on the tie, coat, shoes and then brush shoes.) (As you do this layout only one shoe!!!) "Does your Daddy get dressed for work? Thank you, God, for daddies." "Daddies drive to work in the car. (Hold the steering wheel and or use car keys.) Daddy says, 'Come kiss me good-bye.' Sometimes we don't come right away. We should always come when Daddy calls and then say, 'Bye, Daddy!' (Have a child to come up and give the "Daddy" a hug and kiss. For younger children use a large doll.), "Does your daddy go to work in a car? Thank you, God, for daddies." "At night, some daddies put on a:robe and houseshoes. Sometimes daddies read the paper. Daddies love to read the newspaper." (Put on the rope and the houseshoes and read the newspaper.) "Sometimes daddies don't like to talk. They just sit and read. If Daddy says, 'Please let me read the paper now,' you should mind Daddy." "Daddies are so nice. You can help your daddy at home. You can straighten his shoes in his closet. (Straighten the men's shoes and house shoes on the floor.) You can brush his shoes for him. (Brush the shoes.) You can rub his back." "But best of all, you can give Daddy a hug and say, 'I love you, Daddy.''' "Can we say, ' Day, I love you, Daddy?'". {~-" -/---'- ( ~'-SJ FOR CHILDREN 24 MONTHS OLD AND UNDER 1. Supplies Needed Bible; a tie; a coat; men's shoes; a doll (child); a newspaper. 2. Preparation For Story Ease the children to your story circle by singing your transition song. Once the children are seated, sing' 'Where is," act out monthly Bible verse and begin story with prayer. "Thank you, God for my daddy,,amen." *BIBLE LEADER - "God gives us daddies." 3. Outline For Story *If you have a man teacher, he may want to act out the different parts of the story as you say them. "Today is Father's Day. Here is a father (or a picture of a father)." "Daddies go to work. They wear a tie (or a coat) and shoes. (Put these items on yourself or the man teacher as you talk.) Do you have a daddy? Thankyou, God, for daddies.", "Daddies like a kiss good-bye when they go to work." (Hug a doll "child".) "At night, some daddies wear a robe and houseshoes. Does your Daddy ever wear a robe? Thank you, God, for daddies." "God gives us daddies. Thank you, God." I MUSIC TIME You will want to invite two or three daddies to your music time. Have special crowns made for them. Place the daddies in chairs and invite their children to come up and sit with them. Introduce each dad as you place the crown on him. Be sure to applaud after each introduction. Remember to introduce each daddy as (child's name) 's daddy.

6 Sing the following song to the tune of "Happy Birthday": Also sing: Day to you, Day to you. Day, Day, Day to you. "My Family" "God is so Good; He gives us Daddies" "When I Pray" CRAFT TIME 1. Before Sunday cut out the pockets, the child paperdolls and the daddy paperdolls. Tape the pocket onto the background. 2. Have the child glue the daddy onto the background. Identify the' paperdoll. J. Give the child the appropriate child paperdoll (boy or girl). Identify the paperdoll as the child you are talking to. Have the child place the paperdoll in the pocket. Then demonstrate rui1ningthe child (paperdoll) to daddy (paperdoll) and jumping into his open arms. Repeat the words written at the top of the craft. Have the child return the child paperdoll to the pocket.'. NafE TO THE PARENTS The following might be included in your note to the parents. 1. Advise them of the story and activities taught that day. 2. Mother, encourage your child to do something special for daddy this week. Some suggestions are straighten daddy's shoes in his closet, brush daddy's shoes, bring him the newspaper or the mail. Also, he can give daddy a big hug and tell him he loves him.

7 EXPANDED SESSION FATHER'S DAY -. Supplement BIBLE BASIS Ephesians 6:1 That the child will understand LESSON AIM that he shows his love for his father by obeying him. CENTER TIME 1. "Daddy Is Special" After the children have done at least one of the first two centers in the curriculum, and have talked about obedience and respect, they will be ready to do this center. The purpose of this center is to remind them that God gives us daddies, and daddies are special. Using tag board or extra long construction paper, have crowns cut out. It will probably take one piece of paper cut in half long ways to make one crown. ~ Have.. "Daddy is special" written on the front piece. ~ D.~, S e"i.1 Have glue, glitter and shallow pans to catch extra glitter. Let the children dot glue on the crown or sprinkle with glitter. Have your Bible open to Ephesians 6:1 and have the following conversation wit.h the children: "Did you know the Bible says God gives us daddies, and they are special? God tells us to obey our daddies and do what they tell us to do.this crown is for your Daddy. It will tell him that you think he is special and that you want to obey him."
