Out World! of thisworld! Outrageous, Astonishing but TRUE Chanukah Facts! Edible Menorah! In 2006, Chabad of the Rivertowns in Dobbs Ferry, NY made the world s largest edible Menorah! Hundreds of kids and parents helped build the Menorah and watched in delight as the candles were lit. The 12 ft tall, 16 ft wide Menorah was made entirely out of doughnuts and candy yum!! Can you guess how many doughnuts were used?! (answer on page 26) A Hole Lotta Doughnut! On January 21 st, 1993, the world s largest jelly doughnut was made in Utica, New York. It weighed 1.7 tons and was 16 ft wide! Today, in the United States alone, over 10 billion doughnuts are made every year! Spaced Out!? In 1997, Jewish astronaut Dr. David A. Wolf spent Chanukah in space. Not one to miss a party, he brought along his dreidel and gave it a spin in zero gravity. Probably the longest dreidel spin ever to be recorded, his dreidel spun for nearly an hour and a half! Supersize this! In 2005, a bunch of Canadian college students decided to build the world s largest spinning dreidel! The dreidel took 9 hours to build and needed 10 students to lift it onto its base. It stood over 22 ft high and actually spun! The students said they first thought about making the world s biggest latke, but they weren t sure how to do it. If you decide to have a crack at that, let us know and you ll be published, next Chanukah, in this very space! 4

THE CHANUKAH STORY MIGHTY WAR ELEPHANTS, DEFIANT JEWS, BRAVE MACCABEES AND SINISTER GREEKS! This is a story of courage and triumph, of good over evil, of light defeating dark. This is: The Chanukah Story! MAC A. BEE

Chapter 1 In which we begin at the beginning Ido not want you to read this story if you enjoy sad endings. Many things will happen that may seem hard to believe. These things are Nissim, which means miracles. They were performed by G-d to help His people. And this means that the Series of Events I will now begin telling you, is a very fortunate series indeed. Kings are funny things. If they re good, they re very, very good and if they re bad, well they re horrid. Just ask King Antiochus. He, for want of a better word, was horrid. Antiochus the Fourth came into power after his brother, King Seleucus died. He lived near Syria which is not too far from Israel. Living not far away from King Antiochus was not pleasant for the Jewish people in Israel. Here s another thing: Antiochus ruled over what was called the Syrian-Greek Empire. But for the sake of simplicity, let s just call them Greeks. Ok? Now to our story. Chapter 2 In which Antiochus rises to power. Or as we say, Awful Antiochus. The story begins in a land called Israel, around 2,170 years ago. That s a long time. Almost 10 times as long as the United States have been united. Israel, as you well know, is a Jewish country, given to the Jewish people by G-d. You will not be surprised to hear then, that Jewish people live, sleep, eat and work there. They also pray there. And they used to pray in the Bet Hamikdash the Holy Jewish Temple in Jerusalem, a glorious, golden building used as a place to serve and thank G-d. If you have had time to read many books you will know that when things sound good they rarely stay that way for long. So it will not come as a bolt from the blue when I tell you that King Seleucus became very jealous of the Jews and sent his minister Helyodros to steal the gold and silver from the Bet Hamikdash. When Minister Helyodros arrived, the Jews were quite certain he had not just come to say hi. They had a bad feeling he was trying to steal from them. Mostly because he said he was going to. The man in charge of the Bet Hamikdash at this time was Rabbi Yochanan the Kohen Gadol. Kohen Gadol means High Priest a very holy man. He begged the minister not to touch anything. Of course you and I know that Minister Helyodros hated Jews and didn t care much for Rabbi Yochanan either. So he didn t listen. This seems very unfortunate, but you ll remember what I said earlier that the events of this story were not unfortunate at all. Here s one proof: When Helyodros entered the Bet Hamikdash, he froze from awe and fear. A frozen man cannot steal 6

The Jewish children hid in caves and tricked the soldiers into thinking they were playing Dreidel. very well, can he? And even when he unfroze, the minister was so scared of the Jewish people, he ran away. I would very much like to end the story now. No one has been hurt and we can all enjoy the rest of the evening. But in keeping with my pledge to tell you the entire Chanukah story, I am forced to tell you this: King Seleucus died and his brother Antiochus became king. If you thought Seleucus was bad, Antiochus was ten times worse. Antiochus instated a new Kohen Gadol instead of Rabbi Yochanan. He didn t ask anyone before he did this which you will recognize as a very big chutzpah which here means obnoxious activity which is a way of saying very rude behavior. The new Kohen Gadol s name was Jason and he did not think of himself as one of the other Jews. He liked Antiochus men and liked imitating them, which could be why Antiochus wanted him running the Jewish temple. Jason was a Hellenist someone born Jewish who lived like a Greek. You may begin to sense that something very awful is going to happen. You are quite right. Soldiers tried to force the Jews to stop learning Torah. Chapter 3 In which the Jews refuse to give in to the Greeks and Antiochus gets mad. Otherwise known as Defy & Die. Antiochus conquered the land of Israel. This meant he had absolute power to do absolutely everything he wanted. And what he wanted most of all, was to stop the Jews believing in G-d. He didn t mind so much if they learnt the Torah, because that, he felt was an intellectual exercise, which means to say it makes you smart. And what the Greeks valued most of all, was how smart you were and how beautiful you looked. What he did mind however, was if the Jewish people believed in the Torah, and did what G-d says. Which is, of course, what Jews do. All over Israel, Jewish children defied the king by secretly learning Torah in caves dotting the mountains of Judea. In a terrible rage, Antiochus sent his soldiers to find and kill any child caught learning Torah. I said this was a fortunate story though, did I not? As soon as the soldiers would burst into a cave, all they found were kids playing dreidel! Funny how dreidel was so popular in those days, hmm? A series of proclamations soon started issuing from the palace: No more learning Torah! No Shabbat! No keeping Kosher! No circumcisions! and so on and so forth. Which wouldn t be so bad if they weren t accompanied by dire punishments; dire meaning terrible. And a slow, torturous death is terrible indeed. 7

Like in this story: Rabbi Eliezer was told to eat pork, which as you know, is not kosher. Eating kosher is something we do only because G-d told us to. This made the Greeks burning mad, because it was a symbol of our faith in G-d. They told Rabbi Eliezer to publicly show all the Jews he was eating pork. If that does not seem like a big deal to you, maybe this will: The soldiers said they would kill Rabbi Eliezer if he refused. Which he did. So they killed him. If you think that would have made the Jews give up, then think again. A Jewish woman named Chana was told that her seven sons would have to bow down to a Greek idol. Jews don t do that. Not even under threat of death, which happened to be what Chana and her sons were threatened with. Chana watched the Greeks kill each of her sons and then she herself died. That is a very sad part of the Chanukah story and I feel bad that I had to share it, but as I mentioned, everything was for the best and each person who stood up to the Greeks like Rabbi Eliezer and Chana and Chana s seven sons helped shape the whole story of Chanukah into the wonderfully miraculous story that it is. Like Matisyahu. Chapter 4 In which the Maccabees assemble an army to fight against the Greeks. Also know as Marvelous Maccabees. Chana s 7 sons refused to bow down to the Greek idols. Matisyahu is a singer who lives in New York. I am not talking about him. I am speaking of Matisyahu who was the leader of the Jewish people. He was a holy man like Yochanan the Kohen Gadol and not a schmendrik like Jason. Schmendrik is how I like to refer to people who make trouble for no good reason. The person who let the air out of my car tires is a schmendrik. Matisyahu didn t listen to the Greeks when they told him to bring a pig onto the Mizbe ach that s the altar in the Bet Hamikdash where the Jews offered sacrifices to G-d. A pig would make a very bad present to G-d. That is the very reason that the Greeks wanted to give Him one. A Hellenist person DID offer the pig he may also be called a schmendrik and Matisyahu and his sons killed the man. There s only one problem. Matisyahu died. The good thing is that Matisyahu s son, Yehuda took over as the leader. Yehuda was fearless and strong. He believed in G-d and loved the Torah all excellent qualities for a Jewish leader. He was a Maccabee and all the Jewish people who followed him were called The Maccabees. This is good, but Antiochus sent his entire, massive army to kill all of the Maccabees, so let s see if it is good enough. >>> continued on page 10 8

Judah the MACCABEE Mi Kamocha Ba-Eilim Hashem! Who is like You amongst the mighty, O G-d! YEHUDAH MATISYAHU YOCHANAN Full Name: Yehudah Chashmonai Born: Modiin (approx. 180 BCE) Buried: Har HaModaot. Father: Mattisyahu the Kohen Gadol. Brothers: Elazar, Shimon, Yochanan, Yonatan. A G-d fearing Jew and a mighty warrior, Yehudah led his people to victory as a fierce fighter and then led them in serving G-d as the Kohen Gadol (High Priest) in the Holy Temple. One of the founders of the princely Chashmonai family, Yehudah is buried alongside his father, brothers and many other members of his family who continued to lead the Jewish people long after his death. Not actual photo Roaring his famous battle cry and waving his sword high in the air, Judah (Yehudah) the Maccabee would come flying down the hills of Judea, his fellow Maccabees close behind, and launch himself into platoon after platoon of terrified Greek soldiers. The first letters from each word of Yehudah s famous war cry spell: MaKaBi which is how the name Maccabee came about! No one knew better than Yehudah that the true secret to the Maccabees successes on the battlefield was that G-d was on their side. The Maccabees were brave and trustworthy men, but they were desperately outnumbered when it came to war. This small band of Jewish warriors faced up to tens of thousands of Greek soldiers, bristling with arrows, swords and spears, and mighty war elephants trained to kill. But Yehudah was not one for despair. Gathering his meager army, he prepared them for war through learning and prayer. For Yehudah knew that the fate of man lies in the hands of G-d, and only He decides what will be. With G-d on their side, the Greeks were defeated! The holy land of Israel was back in Jewish hands, and the Holy Temple re-dedicated to give thanks and praise to G-d. The sweet strains of Torah were once again heard all over the land thanks to Judah the Maccabee: Defender of his people! 9

Chapter 5 In which the Jews fight and G-d fights for them. Or Brutal Battles. Of course it is good enough! I promised at the beginning of this story that all ends well, didn t I? The Maccabees fought battle after battle to get rid of the Greeks. Battles with hundreds and thousands of bad guys and very few good guys. It is never good to fight, but if it should happen, it s definitely not good for FEW people to fight against MANY. Unless they have a special power. Which the Maccabees did: G-d! They were fighting with Emunah which means faith in G-d and which helped them perform the most incredible feats. Like the story of Yehudis. Against all odds, this brave, young Jewish lady went to visit the mighty Greek general Helifornos. She fed him lots of cheese as a treat. Cheese as you know, makes everyone; even big, strong, Greek generals very thirsty. So she gave him lots of strong wine to drink. Which made him very drunk. And fall asleep. So she could chop off his head. In desperation, Antiochus mustered all his armies. He sold his fabulous treasures and used the money to buy thousands of swords, arrows and spears. The Greeks were covered head to toe in shiny armor, and most frightening of all, came riding up on immense war elephants. Probably grey ones, probably bigger than your school bus. It doesn t seem very possible, but with the help of G-d and with the brave fighting of Yehuda and his men, the Maccabees sent the Greeks running for their lives. The Jews were victorious! What a fortunate ending for this story! If only it were the end The brave Maccabees faced up to ferocious war elephants and thousands of armed soldiers. Chapter 6 In which the Jews are victorious and the Menorah relit. Also called Liberty & Light. Tell me if you have ever driven a bulldozer into a house until the door fell off, the roof caved in and the walls buckled. Tell me if you have ever smashed every window in that house, dropped smelly garbage in every room and sprayed paint on all the walls. If you have, you may recognize what the Maccabees found when they came home to the Bet Hamikdash. The Greeks had treated the Bet Hamikdash like a dump. Don t worry though; the Maccabees quickly started fixing this unhappy sight. They built and mended, cleaned and scrubbed, polished and shined until they were ready to dedicate the new and improved Bet Hamikdash. They were going to light the Menorah, the beautiful 7-branched candelabra made out of pure gold. This would be great news if not for what I am going to say now: The Maccabees could not find any oil with which to light the Menorah. 10

I am only saying this in case you think the Maccabees could have gone to the supermarket to get more oil: They couldn t have. They needed special oil that was covered and sealed by the Kohen Gadol and hadn t been touched by any people who were not clean or pure. And they could not find any because the schmendrik Greeks had opened all of the bottles of oil just to upset the Jewish people. And besides, supermarkets weren t invented yet. From my earlier promise, and from reading about the many Nissim that happened so far, you can guess that all was not lost. Like all the events in this series, this story ends happily: A small bottle of oil was found that had the right seal on it. But there was a small problem that I am sorry to have to tell you about: The oil bottle was tiny. It had enough in it to burn for about a day but it would take eight full days to get more oil. That means the Menorah would not be lit for seven days. Unless Well, why don t we read the end of this story to find out? Chapter 7 In which the Jews have faith in G-d and miracles abound. Ihave been looking forward to this part for a very long time now because it just goes to prove what I said. That it all ends very well indeed. When something is dedicated it is called a Chanukah. On the 25 th day of Kislev that is the ninth month in the Jewish calendar the Maccabees lit the Menorah as a Chanukah of the Bet Hamikdash. Even though it seemed there was not enough oil, the Menorah just kept burning and burning. After the first day, it burned through the second. It didn t just stop after the second day. It didn t stop after the third day. It didn t stop after the fourth, fifth or sixth days. It didn t stop after the seventh day either. The oil stopped burning after the eighth day which was great because new oil had been made by that time. Hooray! This is what I mean when I say there were some very big Nissim. The events that seemed unfortunate turned out for the best which is good. The things that looked good turned out for the better which is best. Let me share one more thing: Just as the Maccabees had great faith that helped them get through those scary times, we also have great faith in G-d. We know that even though the Most Fortunate Event has not yet happened, it will happen very soon. By this I am talking about Moshiach which means redeemer who will bring peace into the world, take all the Jewish people back to Israel, and build a brand new Bet Hamikdash. And that will be very fortunate indeed! The Menorah was lit and burned for 8 days. A miracle! 11

You will need: A Pen Water TRY THIS AT HOME! Magnetism Now You See It Magnets attract magnetic materials, like iron and steel. But their force works even through non-magnetic things like cardboard, glass, plastic, wood and water! A Magnet A Paperclip A Clear Glass A Piece of Cardboard 12

the Jews in the story of If Chanukah had been told they would win the war against the Greeks, they probably would never have believed it. Why? The Greek army was ENORMOUS with hundreds of divisions, and over 20,000 soldiers in each one! The entire Jewish army only had about 3,000 men! That s like your 10-person, 4 th grade basketball team going up against all 450 players in the NBA! The Greek army wasn t only much bigger, it was also very well-trained. These soldiers had been learning to fight since they were little kids. The Greeks also had lots of fancy weaponry like spears, swords, arrows, and hundreds of mighty war elephants which they used like tanks! The Jewish army was made up of ironsmiths, scribes, farmers and shopkeepers. They weren t trained soldiers at all. Plus, they had no weapons, no shields and of course, no elephants! It s easy to understand why the Greeks were so confident they would win. It s also easy to see why it would have been crazy for the Jews to think they had any chance of surviving at all! Except for one thing G-d. The Jews continued to believe in G-d even when things seemed hopeless. They believed that G-d was with them, helping them all the time. He was. And He still is today! G-d made the Jewish people win the war even when it looked physically impossible. Magnetic Magnitude! What happens when you take a magnet and hold it close to a fridge? The magnet automatically gets pulled towards the fridge! That s because there is a very strong magnetic attraction between the fridge and the magnet. It s a force that cannot be seen, but is definitely there! What can we compare this to? Even though we can t actually see Him, G-d s power and force is obvious in everything that happens in our lives. We may not be able to see Him, but we know He exists and is running the world, pulling us towards Him with the force of His constant love. Can you guide a paperclip through the maze without touching the paperclip? Here s how: 1. Draw a maze on a piece of cardboard. 2. Hold the maze in one hand and place the paperclip at the start. 3. With your other hand, hold the magnet under the cardboard, so it is directly underneath the paperclip. 4. Now slowly move your magnet, guiding the paperclip through the maze! Can you rescue a paperclip from a glass of water without getting wet? 1. Fill your glass with water and drop the paperclip inside. 2. Take the magnet and place it on the outside of the glass. 3. See if you can pull the paperclip to the side of the glass and up to the top without getting wet! 13

Where are all the students? They ve gone to take part in the Grand Public Menorah Lighting! We light the Menorah to publicize the great miracles that G-d performed for us. The story of Chanukah shows that G-d was watching over His people the whole time. Just like we carefully search to find the hidden items in this picture, we can search and see G-d s hand in everything in life. Even if we can t see Him, we know G-d is always there! I Shpy a coin, 3 jars filled with oil, 8 white candles and some people in turmoil, A precious Torah scroll and Menorahs numbering 4, The word CHANUKAH and a map to win the war! 15

s o, experienced a miracle lately? It may sound farfetched, but in reality, miracles are happening every second of the day! It doesn t have to mean candy-bars raining from the sky, or dollar bills growing on trees. It means everyday miracles that are all around us. Like that time your parents ran out of gas and stopped on the highway and were helped by their long-lost friend who just happened to be in town. Or that time you forgot to take out the garbage, and lucky you didn t, because your autographed baseball card was inside! Coincidence? I think not! This is G-d s way of saying: That wasn t a coincidence, that was Me! And I m always here, looking out for you! The story of Chanukah was one big miracle. G-d helped his people time and time again, and continues to help us today! Send us a miracle story of your own to win 1 of 3 mini-camcorders! Enter online to win! Would you like to comment? The story of Chanukah is clearly miraculous, that s why we make every effort to publicize the great story of Chanukah to the world! One way to publicize it is by having public Menorah lightings in places like malls, city squares, and parks. Go to to find your nearest public Menorah lighting! 16

MENORAH HOW-TO: Menorah? Check. Oil? Check. All systems ready? Then let s UP UP AND LIGHTAWAY! What s your 20? All good transformers know you gotta be in the right place at the right time. That s why we light the Menorah in the doorway opposite the Mezuzah, or near the window. Why? To publicize the miracles G-d did for us, and transform darkness to light! Fill er up! The best way to fulfill the Mitzvah of lighting the Menorah is to use pure olive oil and cotton wicks, just like the Menorah in the Holy Temple. If that s not possible, candles will work just as well as long as they burn for at least half an hour! HAPPY CHANUKAH Light it Right! We place candles in the Menorah from right to left, but we light the candles from left to right. On the 1 st night we light one candle on the right side. On the 2 nd night we light 2 candles, starting from the new one on the left and moving to the right. We continue this way every night of Chanukah adding a candle each night. Lead the way! All teams have a leader and the Chanukah lights are no exception! We can t use the Chanukah candles themselves to light each other, so we use a Shamesh instead. It s not one of the 8 Chanukah candles that are lined up on the same level, it needs to be placed higher than that. Most people like to use a Shamesh made from sweet-smelling beeswax. 26 Modern miracles signaling the times of Moshiach Photo: Shmais.com Broadcast live on national television for an audience of millions on the 4 th night of Chanukah, December , Ariel Cohen and her family lit the Menorah in front of President George W. Bush in the White House! 24-foot Menorah opposite the Kremlin Through the streets of Moscow Chanukah Celebration inside the Kremlin Manezhnaya Square, Russia Every year, Jews around the world light the Menorah to commemorate the miracles G-d performed for us. The lights of Chanukah symbolize the victory of light over darkness. And there s no place more fitting to light the Chanukah Menorah than in Manezhnaya Square, the largest square in Moscow, directly opposite the Kremlin. This giant, 24-foot Menorah is lit in the very place where not long ago, Jews were persecuted, imprisoned and killed for practicing their religion. Lighting the Menorah in the most public square in Russia is a continuation of the Chanukah Miracle, and a true sign of the peace that will envelop the world with the coming of Moshiach! Photos: Israel Bardugo 26 Answer from page 4: A whopping 500 doughnuts were used to build the edible Menorah!
