Before Jesus returned to Heaven, He told His friends that He would send the Holy Spirit. A. The Holy Spirit is just like the Father God and Jesus. 1. He is kind, gentle, and good. 2. The Holy Spirit is our helper. B. One hundred and twenty of Jesus' friends went to Jerusalem and began to pray in an upstairs room on a day called Pentecost. C. Suddenly, there was a strong wind, and tongues of fire appeared over the h eads of all the people who were there. 1. The people began to speak strange words out loud. The Holy Spirit gave them a new language to speak. 2. Their minds did not understand the words, but they knew that speaking in tongues made their spirits strong. II. A large crowd of people gathered outside to hear what was being said. A. Some people believed that Jesus' disciples were drunk when they talked in tongues. 131

2 B. Some people were amazed because they heard and understood the disciples praising God in different languages. C. Peter stood up and began to preach to the crowd of people. 1. He was full of boldness. 2. Just a few days earlier, he was ashamed of Jesus and afraid of what people thought of Him. D. Three thousand people were saved that day after Peter preached about Jesus. III. The Holy Spirit is still here for us today. A. He wants to be our helper. 1. He makes us to understand the Bible. 2. He guides us and tells us the right things to do. 3. He tells us what God and Jesus say. 4. He helps us to work for Jesus, to pray for the sick, and to tell people how to be saved. B. \Vhen a believer is filled with the Holy Spirit, he talks in tongues. C. Little children can receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:17, 39). John the Baptist had the Holy Spirit before he was ever born! (Luke 1:15) 132

Pharaoh, King of Egypt, h ated the Israelites. A. He hated them because they were a healthy people and had healthy children. 1. The Israelites served God. The Egyptians worshipped idols. 2. God's Word is health to those who find it and keep it. B. Pharaoh ordered all the Israelite baby boys t o be killed. C. It was God's enemy, the devil, who put the evil idea in Pharaoh's heart. II. Arnram and J ochebed, two Israelites, had a baby boy. A. They refused to let him be killed. 1. God does not want little children to die. 2. God's will is that you live to be old. B. The Lord gave Amram and J och ebed a plan. 1. Jochebed made a little boat or basket from bulrushes. 2. She made the little basket warm and safe for her baby boy. 145

4 C. Jochebed took the little basket and her baby down to the river. 1. She put the baby boy in the basket and hid him in the weeds at the edge of the water. 2. Miriam, the baby's sister, hid close by to watch over her brother. III. While bathing one day, Pharaoh's daughter spotted the little basket. A. She sent h er maids to get it and found the baby boy inside. 1. Miriam saw what had happened and volunteered t o find a nurse for the baby. 2. She went and got the baby's own mother, J oc:1ebed. B. The P rincess raised the baby boy as h er own son and named him Moses. 1. Although Moses lived in the palace, his mother was able to t each him and train him to worship the true God. 2. When you trust in God, He will protect you. There is no r eason to fear. 146

Moses died and a man named Joshua became the new leader of Israel. A. God gave instructions to Joshua. B. He told Joshua to lead the children of Israel into the land of Canaan, which the Lord had promised them. C. He told Joshua to be strong and of good courage, because nothing could stop him. II. The people of a large city called Jericho were afraid of the Israelites. A. They had heard of the mighty things God had do"ne for the Israelites. B. J ericho was a well-protected city. 1. It was completely surrounded by a wall. 2. The people of Jericho hid behind the walls. No one came out or went in. C. Nothing is too hard for God. III. God gave Joshua a battle plan to capture Jericho. A. God told Joshua to have the army march around Jericho once a day for six days. 155

6 B. Joshua told the people to stay quiet. C. On the seventh day, Joshua told the people to march around the city seven times. 1. The march was led by the priests, who carried the Ark of the Covenant, containing the presence of God. 2. Some of the priests carried trumpets. D. God told them that the walls of the city would fall down. IV. Israel obeyed and the plan worked! A. The people worshipped God and shouted while the walls still stood. Faith shouts before it sees the answer. B. The walls fell when the Israelites, led by the priests, marched around the city seven times and on the seventh time, shouted. C. God gave the city to Joshua and the people. D. God honored the obedience and faith of the Israelites. 156

When God created Adam, He made him the boss of the whole earth. A. Adam was God's under-ruler, the god of this world. B. Even th e wind and rain were subject to him. C. When Adam sinned, he sold the earth to Satan who then became the god of this world. D. Satan is the one who causes violent storms that kill and destroy. E. Greater is J esus who is in us than the devil who is in the worl d. II. Jesus and His disciples crossed the sea t o preach. A. J esus said, "Let u s pass over to th e other side." Then He went to the back of the boat and slept. B. While He slept, a violent storm came upon them and frightened the disciples. C. The fearful disciples woke J esus and asked, "Don't you care if we die?" III. J esus took authority over the storm. A. Jesu s rebuked the storm and it immediately stopped. 165

8 1. Jesus knew that the storm did not come from His Father, but from Satan. 2. Satan was trying to kill Jesus with the storm. B. The disciples could have stopped the storm, too, because J esus scolded them for having been afraid. 1. Jesus is always with us and we don't ever have to be afraid. 2. Psalm 91:10 tells us that no evil will happen to us. C. We can also rebuke destructive storms just as Jesus did. 166

David had been King of Israel for many years and he had grown very old. It was time to select a new kirig. A. David had promised his wife, Bathsheba, that her son, Solomon, would be king. B. Solomon was God's choice. The first thing we should consider in making choices is what God wants. C. David died and all Israel accepted Solomon as king. II. Solomon wanted to be a good king. A. H e wanted to please God. B. Solomon went to the city of Gibeon and offered many sacrifices to the Lord there. C. When the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream and to]d him He would give him anything h e asked fo r, Solomon asked for wisdom. 1. The Lord, being very pleased with Solomon's choice. also promised him a lon g life and riches. 177

10 2. Godly wisdom is more important than anything else in the world. 3. The fear or reverence of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. III. Solomon became very wise and made many important decisions. A. One day, two women came to Solomon~ 1. One woman said, "My friend stole my baby in the night, after her own baby died." 2. The other lady said, "No, this live baby is my son and the dead baby is her son." B. Solomon, in his wisdom, knew that the real mother would not want any harm to come to her son, so he drew his sword as if to cut the live baby in half. 1. Just as Solomon had known, when the real mother saw that her son was about to be killed she cried out, "No, no, let her have the baby! Please don't kill him!" 2. Solomon's godly wisdom helped him to find the true mother for the baby. 178
