And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews children. 7 Then said his sister to Pharaoh s daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee? 8 And Pharaoh s daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child s mother. 9 And Pharaoh s daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it. 10 And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water. 10 3
5 4 I m Special I m special.. In all the world there s nobody like me. Since the beginning of time, there has never been another person like me. Nobody has my smile. Nobody has my eyes, my nose, my hair, my hands, my voice. I m special. No one can be found who has my handwriting. Nobody anywhere has my taste for food or music or art. No one else sees things just as I do. In all of time there s been no one who laughs like me, no one who cries like me, and what makes me laugh and cry will never provoke identical laughter and tears from anybody else, ever. No one reacts to any situation just as I would react. I m special. I m the only one in all of creation who has my set of abilities. Oh, there will always be somebody who is better at one of the things I m good at, but no one in the universe can reach the quality of my combination of talents, ideas, abilities and feelings. Like a room full of musical instruments, some may excel alone but none can match the symphony sound when all are played together. I m a symphony. Through all of eternity no one will ever look, talk, walk, think, or do like me. I m special. I m rare. And in all rarity there is great value. Because of my great rare value, I need not attempt to imitate others. I will accept celebrate my differences. I m special. And I m beginning to realize it s no accident that I m special. I m beginning to see that God made me special for a very special purpose. He must have a job for me that no one else can do as well as I. Out of all the billions of applicants, only one is qualified, only one has the right combination of what it takes. That one is me. Because...I m Special. 1. Where in the scriptures is this story found? 2. And there went a man of the house of, and took to wife a daughter of. 3. And when she could not longer hide the child what did she do? 4. And his stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him. 5. Who saw the ark in the flags as she came down to wash herself at the river? 6. She saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept, and she had on him. 7. "Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee?" Who asked this of Pharaoh's Daughter? 8. Who became the nurse of the child Pharaoh's daughter had found? 9. And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's, and he became her son. 10. What does the name Moses mean? 9
6 1. Moses had to sense God s calling on his life, discuss or write down some of the tensions with sharing God s calling on your life. 2. What do you think would be most important to Moses in fulfilling God s plans. 3. Just as Moses was drawn out of the water, but more importantly, out of the Egyptian culture, what will it take for God to draw you out of your world to fulfill your roll in His Kingdom? 4. Trials today are preparing you for ministry tomorrow. 8 Exodus 2:8 And Pharaoh s daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child s mother. Exodus 2:10 And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water. As soon as the natural time for weaning the child had come, he was transferred from the humble abode of his father to the royal palace, where he was brought up as the adopted son of the princess, his mother probably accompanying him and caring still for him. He grew up amid all the grandeur and excitement of the Egyptian court, maintaining, however, probably a constant fellowship with his mother, which was of the highest importance as to his religious belief and his interest in his "brethren." His education would doubtless be carefully attended to, and he would enjoy all the advantages of training both as to his body and his mind. He at length became "learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians" (Acts 7:22). Egypt had then two chief seats of learning, or universities, at one of which, probably that of Heliopolis, his education was completed. Moses, being now about twenty years of age, spent over twenty more before he came into prominence in Bible history. These twenty years were probably spent in military service. There is a tradition recorded by Josephus that he took a lead in the war which was then waged between Egypt and Ethiopia, in which he gained renown as a skilful general, and became "mighty in deeds" (Acts 7:22). After the termination of the war in Ethiopia, Moses returned to the Egyptian court, where he might reasonably have expected to be loaded with honours and enriched with wealth. But "beneath the smooth current of his life hitherto, a life of alternate luxury at the court and comparative hardness in the camp and in the discharge of his military duties, there had lurked from childhood to youth, and from youth to manhood, a secret discontent, perhaps a secret ambition. Moses, amid all his Egyptian surroundings, had never forgotten, had never wished to forget, that he was a Hebrew." EBD 5
7 6 Baby Moses Now while the Egyptians were still in the practice of killing all the sons born to the Hebrews, a man and his wife from the tribe of Levi, had a son that they kept in hiding for three month. And the Bible says that when his mother could no longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river s brink. Now the boys sister was watching from a distance when she saw one of Pharoah s daughters coming to wash herself in the river. As she was washing she noticed the ark in the bulrushes and sent her maid to get it. When she open it she saw the Hebrew child weeping, and had compassion on it. His sister asked Pharoah s daughter if she wanted her to get a nurse of the Hebrew women and she said yes, so God had provided for the mother to nurse her own baby even though she had to give it up, and he became the son of Pharoah s daughters. She called him Moses, which means, Because I drew him out of the water. Wow, can you imagine this Hebrew slave boy will grow up in Pharoah s palace with the best of everything. Clothing, food, service, education, all will be his, but maybe most importantly the mindset of the Egyptians. He will know what it is to be free, and yet he will still always be Hebrew. God was very careful in preparing Moses for the plans of greatness he had for him, but don t discount yourself, God is just as concerned to fulfill the wonderful plans of greatness He has for you too. Jeremiah 29:11 says, For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord, plans to prosper you, to give you a hope and a future. You have a part to play in this also, the next verse states that, you will find Me when you seek me with your whole heart. Open your heart up to get to know God intimately, share everything with Him, make Him the most important part of your life. Call upon Him and He will show you great and mighty things of which you know not. His plans will prosper you, but I know that your greatest joy will come from how those same plans, prosper the Kingdom of God. As Moses and the other great heroes of the faith, Make your life, your gift to God! 7
