Drive too much? Ours is a sedentary age: Consider taking a good walk. Thomas Jefferson commended it as the best possible exercise. True enough. But walking can give us much more. Many great artists were great walkers. Wordsworth, Coleridge, Giacometti, Thoreau all of them walked many miles as a spur to their visions. Elliot Wolfson, a scholar of mysticism, points out that walking in Hasidic tradition was considered a sacred duty. In Kotzk they sang a song: To Kotzk one does not travel, one may only walk. Walking was considered an ascent, for although the tradition teaches that angels stand, fixed forever, human beings walk. Among the names for a worshipper is one who is walking. The interaction between the spirit and the body, whether they should even be seen as distinct, has been a contentious issue for millenia. No one, however, denies that physical activity can energize the spirit. Dancing stirs a heart. Running can be an expression of joy, or at least a spur to joy. But there is a special status to walking. The word halacha, connoting the system of Jewish law, comes from the root holech, which means to walk. The Israelites walked through the desert, and their journey like our own was both literal and spiritual. As Presdent Obama has noted, If you are walking on the right path and you re willing to keep walking, eventually you ll make progress. After all, everywhere and everything worthwhile is within walking distance if you have the time. The prophet Micah tells us to do justice, love mercy and to walk humbly with God. When it comes to justice and mercy, doing and loving will serve; but when it comes to God, you ve just got to take a walk. Rabbi J.B. Sacks continued continued

3 3 MONDAYS WITH MORT During the month of February there will be sessions of Mondays With Mort at CAH, every Monday at 10:00 AM, except for Monday, February 1st. 4 4 PINK LADIES AND MISHLOACH MANOT Sandra Dee, Betty Rizzo, Danny, Frenchy, Kenicki and the rest of the Pink Ladies and T-birds are excited about the Mishloach Manot at CAH. We want to add to the joyous celebration of Mishloach Manot and Purim evening services with some nostalgia from the past. This year CAH is once again participating in the custom of mishloach manot. Also known as mishloach manos or shortened to shalach manos, these are goodies (all kosher) given out at Purim. These bags or baskets are given to relatives, friends, teachers, neighbors, business associates and any other acquaintances you may have. The mitzvah of giving mishloach manot derives from the Book of Esther. It is meant to insure that everyone has enough food for the Purim feast and to increase love and friendship among Jews as a counter to Haman s assertion that the Jewish people are characterized by strife and disunity. Mishloach manot is made up of sweets, drinks and other food items and can vary from temple to temple and year to year.. It is always fun to open them and discover what has been given. The one item you can count on is, of course, hammentashen. This is not only fun but it brings in money for the congregation. Last year it was a big success bringing in more than $3000, helping the synagogue in many ways. You can purchase as many mishloach manot as you wish and there will be a discount for different quantities purchased. Let us say 10 people want to send Rabbi Sacks a mishloach manot. He gets one bag with a card showing the ten names of those who gave it to him. Please see order form in Migdalor for all the important details. We hope to have everyone participate. 5 5 MINCHA MOMENT A couple of weeks ago, I received one of those s that actually helped me improve my daily outlook, so I decided to share the information with you. It was from Craig Taubman and entitled Mincha Moment. Mincha Moment is taking the time to be grateful. On the website minchamoment.com, is described as a moment in the afternoon-2:30pm,when you stop whatever you re doing, look around and acknowledge to yourself, how truly grateful you are. If 2:30 pm doen t work for you, no problem. Choose another time, but stick to it. You can go to the website and watch the video that adds meaningful pictures to Craig s wonderful adaptation of the tefillah, prayer, Modeh Ani. Modeh Ani, translated as, I give thanks, is the prayer recited upon awakening that thanks G!d for restoring one s soul after a night s sleep. I set my cell phone to remind me every day at 2:30 p.m. so I stop whatever I may be doing and take that moment in. I have recited it almost every morning for a long time and now am very much appreciative of how it changes my outlook in the afternoon as it does for me when recited in the morning. Participants discussed the importance that this book had in the understanding of Zionism in its time period. Also discussed was the portrayal of human nature and relationships. Thank you again to Brenda and Arnie Rich for the use of their home and their hospitality. The next book will be announced soon. We will give ample time to read the book before meeting to discuss it.

12 12 HELP CAH RAISE FUNDS WITH NO COST AND LITTLE OR NO EFFORT TO YOU PLEASE, PLEASE DON T PUT SODA CANS AND WATER BOTTLES IN YOUR TRASH CAN For those of you who recycle plastic water & soda bottles and soda cans great. Whether you recycle these for yourself or give them to someone or an organization to redeem you know someone is benefitting from the recycle program. IT YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO SEPARATE YOUR RECLYCLING AND THEN PUT IT IN THE BLUE TRASH CONTAINER OR DON T SAVE YOUR RECYLING PLEASE READ ON. Since 4/21/14 CAH has gotten $ from recycling. This is from only about a handful of members that contribute. Please, please consider saving your soda cans and bottles for us. It is found money that CAH needs and it does not cost you a cent. Anything that has a CA on it can be turned in for money. You can bring it to the temple or call me and I will pick it up.
