1 CHAPTER 6 JESUS AND THE OLD TESTAMENT
2 The old testament in Jesus day was a collec4on of scrolls. People did not carry scrolls around with them. An Isaiah was 24 feet long.
3 Scrolls were read in the synagogue by rabbis. The literacy rate in Galilee in Jesus day was around 10%. Highly likely that Jesus could neither read nor write. Does this bother you?
4 What we do know is that Jesus was very well versed in the Old Testament as He quotes it oken. In Jesus day, according to the Mishnah, children at the age of 5 began studying the scriptures, and by 10 they were studying the Mishnah, the oral tradi4ons. My guess is that most was handed down orally from the Rabbis to the students so there was no need for Jesus to be able to read or write.

15 Ezekiel was a prophet of the Exile trying to help the Jews make sense of the destruc4on of Jerusalem and the Temple. He was also plan4ng seeds of hope that God would one day restore and heal them. The author says that much of Jesus sense of iden4ty and mission was shaped by reading Ezekiel 34.
