BETWEEN2WORLDS.ORG June 7, 2010 Leading Nigerians and Nigerian Americans into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:9-11 DANIEL: Politics. Integrity. End Times. part three: flammable faith. by Segun Aiyegbusi Possess Your Possessions! 2010: Your Year Of Promise Miracles And Deliverance! Prosperity Is On Its Way! Power Must Change Hands! With Christian conference titles like this, who wouldn t want to follow Jesus? I feel better already just reading through that list. I don t know who comes up with these creative titles in church planning committees, but whoever you are, I have an awesome idea for your next conference title. Call it, 2010: Power And Prosperity Must Change Hands Because Success And Victory Are Knocking On The Door With Miracles And Deliverance In Their Hands! Now tell me, who wouldn t want to come to that conference? I m being facetious with that introduction, but it does raise a pertinent question, Are we truly following and worshipping Jesus or are we worshipping the expectation of what he s going to do for us? What if 2011 comes around and all those promises have NOT been fulfilled in your life? In fact, what if by January 2011, your situation is worse off than it was when you attended this so-called conference that promised you health and wealth? Will you still follow and love Jesus just as passionately? Or does your faith easily burn up when your expectations aren t met? What would it take for you to forsake your hope and faith in Jesus Christ? While our natural reaction as followers of Jesus Christ would be to answer with an immediate, NOTHING, we need to consider that it takes a lot more than persecution, or delayed promises for the heart to wane. In some cases, prosperity and blessing, not pain, is the culprit, as we ll see in chapter three of Daniel. Turn with me to verse 3 and you ll begin to see what I 1

mean, King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, ninety feet high and nine feet wide, and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon. 2 He then summoned the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials to come to the dedication of the image he had set up. 3 So the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials assembled for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up, and they stood before it. 4 Then the herald loudly proclaimed, "This is what you are commanded to do, O peoples, nations and men of every language: 5 As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. 6 Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace." 7 Therefore, as soon as they heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp and all kinds of music, all the peoples, nations and men of every language fell down and worshiped the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. (v.1-7) When I preached this message live, I titled this section, Playing with Fire. To understand that title, it will be helpful to look at what transpired in the latter section of the previous chapter. By the way, throughout the rest of this message, I will refer to King Nebuchadnezzar simply as Neb because it s too long a name to keep typing and besides, I somehow manage to always spell it wrong. Back to the story. In chapter 2, king Neb had a dream in which he saw an enormous statue made from gold, silver, bronze, iron and clay. In his efforts to understand the dream, he assembled his closest advisors for answers, but they were of no use because they couldn t interpret the dream. In his anger, Neb threatened to have them all executed. However, after seeking God in prayer, Daniel (who was also an adviser) stepped in and saved the day by interpreting the dream. In part seven of this message series, we will look in detail at the actual contents of the king s dream and its implications because it fits in with some prophetic events we will we will study at a later time. But for our purposes in this message I ll simply say that the dream was a prophetic vision of the different empires that would rise to power prior to the actual return of Jesus Christ. King Neb was so impressed by Daniel s ability to not only interpret the dream, but discern its actual content that he uttered these words about Daniel s God,..Surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you were able to reveal this mystery. (Daniel 2:47) From a casual observer s perspective, it would seem King Neb was becoming a changed man who had finally accepted the God of heaven as his God; in fact we get that impression about him on numerous occasions throughout this book. But reading further, you ll find that he always says or does something that leaves us room to question the authenticity of his faith transformation. A good example is his actions in the first verse of chapter 3. After acknowledging Daniel s God as the greatest God in existence, Neb decides he would also like to be a co-god! He s had enough with simply being a king, he wants the status of divinity. So he instructs his people to build an image of gold, which was more than like a replica statue of himself. Furthermore the dimensions of the statue were to be outrageous, ninety feet high and nine feet wide; and it was to be placed at the center of town where..surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you were able to reveal this mystery. (Daniel 2:47) everyone in the kingdom would have to pass through. The end goal in all this was so they could bow and worship him. Any student of scripture reading this has to be asking himself or herself, why in the world would this king carry out such a prideful act, so suddenly? How do you go from giving praise to the One True God, to wanting to be worshipped as God? To answer that, we have to reach out a little into the Septuagint. The Septuagint is the oldest Greek version of the Old Testament; said to have been translated from Hebrew by Jewish scholars. It was a reliable Old Testament source for early Christians and is useful for in-depth word studies. Anyhow, in Daniel 3:1 of the Septuagint, we are given this additional piece of information, In his eighteenth year, King Neb made an image of gold Based on that extra detail, a few facts are implied. First one is this; sixteen years had passed between chapter two and chapter three. How do I know? Well chapter 2:1 says king Neb had his dream of a statue during the second year of his reign, and we re told in chapter 3:1 of the Septuagint that he followed that dream up by building a gold statue in the eighteenth year of his reign, you do the math. 2

It could very well be that after Daniel alerted Neb to the fact that he wouldn t be king forever and other kingdoms would rise, king Neb anxiously waited year after year for his overthrow but witnessed nothing. After waiting for almost two decades (16 years) he began to overestimate his greatness, perhaps thinking, Daniel must have been wrong about the dream, there is NO ONE great enough to challenge me, I must be the greatest! (Feel free to insert a picture of Mohammed Ali at the peak of his career in here). I began hinting at this during the introduction, but sometimes it doesn t take a fiery trial or hope differed to burn up our faith. For many of us who claim to follow Jesus Christ, our greatest achievements will be our greatest downfall. In other words, God might someday lead some of us to a position of great influence and power where we become so self sufficient that we no longer need God. Isn t that ironic? One of my professors in seminary used to warn us about this when he would say something along these lines, The problem with some of you is that you are good at what you do and may someday become even greater. But pray that your talent and gifting never takes you beyond what your integrity can handle, for many men of God have been there and fallen from great heights. I still feel shivers every time I reflect on his words and it remains my prayer today, Lord, please keep me from willful sin. Keep me from bringing shame to your name today and on the day when you lead me into a position of influence. Unfortunately, King Neb had no such commitment, he was his own greatest achievement, and he wanted everyone in his kingdom to know it. To commemorate his greatness, he assembles the most elaborate worship band money can buy, and invites the most influential and powerful high rollers of society. Check out the guest list in Daniel 3:2, Then he sent messages to the high officers, officials, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates, and all the provincial officials to come to the dedication of the statue he had set up. Now let s be honest about this for a moment, assuming you lived during this period, wouldn t you want to be invited to this event? I mean these were the patrons of high society, the movers and shakers of the Babylonian culture. If you wanted to be known in Babylon, this was one event you had to attend. To be invited, much less attend the event, could have positive political implications if you ever wanted to run for office. I wonder how many of us Christians have compromised our integrity or our faith to participate in less prominent affairs? If the men during this period actually read the fine print on this invitation, they would have discovered that the invite came with a clause. Look at verse 4, This is what you are commanded to do, O peoples, nations and men of every language: 5 As soon as you hear the (worship band playing).you must fall down and worship the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. 6 Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace. Here s where the story begins to get a little risky, Daniel and his three friends Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were on that guest list. If you recall in the previous chapter (2:49), all four of them had just been promoted to positions of high officers over the affairs of Babylon, so not going was not an option. Since Daniel s name is not mentioned in this chapter, there is some indication that he was in another region of the empire running the king s errand while all of this was happening. I ll even take it a step further and suggest that the king purposely planned to build this statue and host this ceremony while Daniel was away; that way, the man whom he respected the most, and who interpreted the dream, would not be there to convict him of his prideful actions. Of course, that s a little bit of a creative stretch on my part. Whatever the case is, this scenario puts the three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in a little bit of a conundrum. This was absolutely the worst time to get a promotion at work! While I m at it, let me say this. When you begin climbing the corporate ladder in your respective fields, the sacrifices you ll have to make with your time, family, and devotion to God will become even greater, the temptations will also become greater, hence it is a healthy habit during these early days of your growth to resolve on what issues you ll never compromised on. This question of bowing before another God had already been resolved in the minds of the three young men. For a Jew, the commandment to worship God, and God alone, was central to all they believed in. As a matter of fact it was one of the greatest commandments they not only had to obey, but memorize, Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength (Deuteronomy 6:4). This was obviously one conviction they couldn t compromise on, so we know they have a major problem on their hands. Incidentally enough, the people fanning these fiery flames of trouble are the king s astrologers. Listen to how they begin stirring up trouble for the three friends in verse 8, At this time some astrologers came forward and denounced the Jews. 9 They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, "O The Invite Clause:...whoever does not fall down and worship will be thrown into a blazing furnace. king, live forever! 10 You have issued a decree, O king, that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes and all kinds of music must fall down and worship the image of gold, 11 and that whoever does not fall down and worship will be thrown into a blazing furnace. 12 But there are some Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon--Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego--who pay no attention to you, O king. They neither serve your gods nor worship the image of gold you have set up. I referred to the astrologers actions as 3

incidental because in the previous chapters, these three friends had played a key role in preventing the astrologers from being executed. When the king had threatened to take their lives because of their inability to interpret his dream, Daniel rallied his three friends, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and they sought after God for an answer. After the answer was provided, the king not only spared the lives of the four friends, but also the astrologers. You would think they would still be grateful right? Well apparently not. These evil men had forgotten all about the good deed done on their behalf. For whatever reason at this juncture in the story, they wanted blood. So they head off to the king and blow out of proportion what was really happening, they told a half-truth. Verse 8 says they denounced the Jews before the king, the word for denounced in verse 8 means to maliciously accuse, or to consume something with the focus on destruction. This had obviously become very personal, the astrologers, wanted the three Jewish boys wiped out completely. If you are familiar with biblical stories, you re probably already sensing a lot more going on here than simple animosity. Already this plot smells like a smokescreen from the very fires of hell. From the very beginning of time, Satan has always had it in for the people of God, especially the Jews. Whenever these chosen people find themselves in a position of power or of influence, there is always an evil stirring in Satan s kingdom. In this case, he had somehow taken hold of the hearts of these astrologers and was using them to stir the prideful heart of the king. If you ever find yourself in situations where life is calm and peaceful, perhaps even promising, but it all suddenly comes to a screeching painful halt, don t overlook the possibility that there might be a spiritual dimension to the trials you re facing. Aside of Satan s desire to bring destruction and pain in your life, his greatest delight is to shake a believer s faith in Jesus Christ, and the easiest way to do that is to make the circumstances around you traumatic. Whether it s an ailing physical condition, a complex relational problem, or a promise of great prosperity at the cost of your faith, what kind of fiery trial would it take to shake your faith in Christ or cause you to abandon him? It might be helpful to think through that question and somehow resolve in our hearts that you will faithfully follow Jesus Christ no matter what comes your way. I say so because being in the midst of the fiery trial is not a good time to make such resolutions! Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego found themselves in the middle of Neb s evil madness. In refusing to bow before the king s image, they were doing the exact opposite of popular opinion, and in so doing incurring the wrath of the king. I have heard this story so many times since I was a kid in Sunday school and I m always moved by their courage. Picture this ceremony with all the royally dressed dignitaries seated facing this great statue. Picture the most elaborate orchestra and band you can imagine off to the side playing. Imagine the chief speaker in your minds eye walking up to the podium and calling for all to bow, the music grows and thousands and thousand of men bow to their knees. If you have ever seen Muslims in Mecca bowing before a giant black box called the Ka aba, then you re seeing what I m envisioning. But instead of the Ka aba, imagine a ninety foot gold statue of Neb. All of a sudden, you begin to hear gasps and people sighing in disbelief. Three men refuse to bow. I would have given anything to witness such bold faith in action, of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up. course I d prefer to have been in a safe corner where no one could see me courageously and defiantly not-bow! Listen to the way the New Living Translation describes the reaction of the king in verse 19 when he finds out, Nebuchadnezzar was so furious with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego that his face became distorted with rage. It also says he ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual; this man had really lost his mind. What actually angered him wasn t the fact that the three men had refused to bow; it was the manner in which they resolutely refused his Lordship. When threatened with being burned alive in a blazing furnace, listen to what they said in verse 16 to 18, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up. Can you imagine that level of courage in the face of such great adversity? This wasn t an empty threat either, the blazing furnace was within eyesight and the three men could probably feel the heat warming up their skin. A little later on in verse 22, it says 4

the furnace was so hot and the flames so great that the soldiers who stoked the fire actually got burned from it. I don t know about you, but I once got burned by a hot iron, I was so angry and in so much pain that I cussed up a storm (in my heart of course) and admitted to every wrong I had done; and no one even asked me to! The conviction and resilience of these men in the face of such danger reminds me of an older song by Christian recording artist Michael W. Smith. The song is titled, This is your time, and it was written in honor of a high school student named Cassie Bernall, perhaps you ve heard the story? On April 20, 1999, the location was Columbine high school, Jefferson County, Colorado. Cassie was in class with the rest of her peers when she heard gunshots in the hallway. In the melee of it all, Cassie found herself face to face with one of her classmates dressed in a trench coat with shotgun in his hand. Without much preparation time, Cassie had one opportunity to save her life if she would renounce her faith in God; she refused and proclaimed her love for and faith in Jesus Christ. About a second later, she was shot dead. It was a tragic story, but for months following her death, she was a great example and model of what it meant to trust in God even in the face of great trials. In his song, This is your time, Michael W. Smith puts to music the great courage this young girl displayed, It was a test we could all hope to pass, But none of us would want to take. Faced with the choice to deny God to live, For her, there was one choice to make. This was her time. This was her dance. She lived every moment; left nothing to chance. She swam in the sea; drank of the deep; Embraced the mystery of all she could be.this was her time Beautiful words, and true too. Fiery trials that test our faith is something we all hope we will pass, but not a single one of us really wants to take that test. Unfortunately, some of us won t have that option, as these three men will testify. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, though not prepared, were ready for the test and passed it with flying colors. They didn t even offer to explain why they wouldn t bow, they simply and explicitly made it known that there was no way in world they were going to worship his image of gold. This is a picture of faith and conviction baked up by action. Now these men were confident that God would rescue them, more than likely because they had seen God work miracles in their lives over the last 16 years, however they were also willing to consider the alternative, and that s what I m afraid too many of us ignore. Listen to what they say in verse 18, But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up. But even if HE does not Isn t that something? I wonder how much excitement I could generate and how many people would show up if I tagged a conference with that title? Would you come to it? It is incredibly comfortable to follow Christ faithfully when everything is going smooth in our lives, but what happens when God doesn t deliver like you expect him? How do you respond if God delivers you through the fire with a few minor burns? How faithful and how vibrant is your faith even when he does not? If I m being completely honest, my prayer is always that God would deliver me from, not through or into the fiery trial that occur in my life, even though I recognized my faith is often polished through those periods. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were literally delivered into the fire, but also rescued through the fire. Read the account with me starting in verse 23, and these three men, firmly tied fell (were thrown) into the blazing furnace. Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, "Weren't there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?" They replied, "Certainly, O king." He said, "but Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods." Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, "Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!" So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them. Then Nebuchadnezzar said, "Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king's command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. 29 Therefore I decree that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble, for no other god can save in this way. It s amazing how quickly emotions must have changed as all this transpired. The king went from prideful ruler to humble king. The grin on the astrologer s faces would have gone from evil smirk to quivering lips. The soldiers responsible for throwing the three men in the fire went from alive to dead (v.22). And the three guys? Well only God knows what must have been running through their minds during those final seconds before they fell in the blazing furnace. Think about it: But even if HE does not If you re like me, you re probably more curious about the 4th character in the fire than you are about the nonflammable guys who just won t burn. Neb identified him as one of the sons of god because it/he looked supernatural. Most Jewish scholars identify the fourth man in the fire as an angel, possibly the angel Gabriel watching over the men; but almost consistently, Christian scholars identify this figure as the pre-incarnate Jesus Christ. I don t want to focus on the debate of the identity of this being because I don t think his identity is as important as the actual event taking place. 5

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego said the God of heaven would rescue them, and HE DID, that s the story we should focus on. In their moments of greatest need, God not only rescued them from the fire, but he did it with flair! Verse 26 says, Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, "Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! This was a complete deliverance, you would think that at least the rope used to tie their hands would burn, but it says they didn t even have the smell of smoke on them. Further more, king Neb was so impressed, that they went from almost burning to death to rulers with even greater influence than they began with; verse 30, Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the province of Babylon. I cannot state this clearly enough, God rewards faithfulness. His love for us, and His rescue in our time of need is not based on how good or bad we ve been, it s based on his faithfulness to us. However there are moments when great acts of faith and conviction in our lives will stir the very heart of the almighty to move in profound ways in our lives. So make the commitment today to follow Christ and live for him, no matter how bad or how great things become in your life.
