New covenant Jer 31:31 Behold, days are coming," declares the Lord, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, Matt 26:26-28 While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take, eat; this is My body." And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you; for this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins Mark 14:24 And He said to them, "This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Luke 22:20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you 1 Cor 11:25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." 2 Cor 3:6 who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
Heb 8:6-13 new covenant v. 8 I will effect a new covenant v. 10 this is the covenant that I will make v. 13 When He said, "A new covenant," He has made the first obsolete. Heb 9:15 For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. Heb 12:24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel. NEW COVENANT IN MY BLOOD Luke 22:20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you 1Cor 11:25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in My blood 6. Wine and Wineskins a. New wine (Num 18:12; Deut 7:13; 11:14; 12:17; 14:23; 18:4; 28:51; 33:28; Judg 9:13; 2Kin 18:32; Neh 5:11; 10:37, 39; 13:5, 12; Prov 3:10; Isa 24:7; 62:8; Jer 31:12; Hos 2:8, 9, 22; 4:11; 7:14; 9:2 Joel 1:5, 10; 2:19; 2:24; 3:18; Hag 1:11; Zech 9:17) Lk 5:37-39 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. And no one, after drinking old wine wishes for new; for he says, 'The old is good enough.'" (Matt 9:17; Mark 2:22) Joel 3:18 And in that day the mountains will drip with sweet (new) wine, Isa 65:8 Thus says the Lord, "As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one says, 'Do not destroy it, for there is benefit in it,' So I will act on behalf of My servants b. New wineskins Mt 9:17 Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved Mk 2:22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins Lk 5:37-38 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved. Acts 2:13 Others mocking said, They are full of new wine
c. New wine into Old Wineskins Matt 9:17 Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined Mark 2:22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wine skins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined Luke 5:37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined 7. New cloth Lk 5:36 And He was also telling them a parable: "No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. Mk 2:21 No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results. the word new occurs twice, but it is two different words in Gr., the first being ágnaphos, one that has not been washed and properly shrunk. The second new is kainós, which means another patch but derived from a cloth that has been washed and shrunk. Therefore it will not shrink when used as a patch and thus tear the garment. It makes no difference from where this patch is taken as long as the patch itself can provide proper replacement for that part of the garment which has been worn or somehow needs replacement. A new patch is needed, but that patch must be of shrunken cloth. Thus it is qualitatively different from just any new (néos) piece of cloth that has not been shrunk. Mt 9:17 Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved. 8. New creature/creation 2 Cor 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. Gal 6:15 for neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. 9. New man/self Eph 2:15 so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, Eph 4:24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. Col 3:10 and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him 10. New heart Ezek 36:26 I will give you a new heart Ezek 18:31 make yourselves a new heart
11. New spirit Ezek 11:19 "And I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, Ezek 36:26 "Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. Ezek 18:31 "Cast away from you all your transgressions which you have committed and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! For why will you die, O house of Israel? 1 Cor 6:17 But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 12. New (and living) Way to come into God's presence Heb 10:19-20 Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh 13. New tongues Mark 16:17 "These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; 14. New song Ps 33:3 Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully with a shout of joy Ps 40:3 He has put a new song in my mouth. Praise to our God Ps 96:1 Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! Sing to the Lord, all the earth Ps 98:1 Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! For He has done marvelous things Ps 144:9 I will sing a new song to You, O God Ps 149:1 Sing to the Lord a new song, and His praise in the congregation of saints Ps 144:9 I will sing a new song to You, O God; Isa 42:10 Sing to the Lord a new song; Sing His praise from the end of the earth! Rev 5:9 And they sang a new song, saying, (Rev 14:3) Rev 14:3 And they sang as it were a new song before the throne, before the four living creatures, and the elders 15. New commandment (love one another) John 13:34 "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 2 John 5 Now I ask you, lady, not as though I were writing to you a new commandment, but the one which we have had from the beginning, that we love one another. (1 Jn 2:7-11)
16. New mercy Lam 3:22-24 The Lord s lovingkindness indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. "The Lord is my portion," says my soul, therefore I have hope in Him. 17. New things Isa 42:9 Behold, the former things have come to pass, now I declare new things; before they spring forth I proclaim them to you. Isa 43:19 Behold, I will do something new, now it will spring forth; will you not be aware of it? Isa 48:6 I proclaim to you new things from this time, even hidden things which you have not known. Jer 31:22 For the LORD has created a new thing in the earth Matt 13:52 And Jesus said to them, "Therefore every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a head of a household, who brings out of his treasure things new and old." 2 Cor 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 18. New heaven and earth 2 Peter 3:13 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. Isa 65:17 For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former things will not be remembered or come to mind. Isa 66:22 "For just as the new heavens and the new earth which I make will endure before Me," Rev 21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. 19. New Jerusalem Rev 3:12 And I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God Rev 21:2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband 20. New name Isa 62:2 And you will be called by a new name which the mouth of the Lord will designate. Rev 2:17 To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.' Rev 3:12 He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he will not go out from it anymore; and I will write on him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God, and My new name.
II. Thoughts from the Experts A. New Year (From Eerdmans Bible Dictionary) Much scholarly debate has surrounded the question of the nature and date of a new year festival in Israel, impeded largely by the scarcity of biblical references to such an observance. Some scholars seek to identify the new year observance as an agricultural festival, noting particularly autumn celebrations associated with the harvest (e.g., the festival of trumpets, Lev. 23:23-25; Num. 29:1-6). Others suggest that certain enthronement Psalms (e.g., Pss. 47, 93, ) represent part of a liturgy for annual celebration of Yahweh s enthronement. Too many gaps exist in current knowledge of both ancient Near Eastern and Israelite festivals to speak confidently of any patterning or borrowing from the observances of neighboring peoples. Similarly, debate rages concerning whether the Israelite new year was observed in the autumn (first of Tishri, Sept./Oct.) or spring (first of Nisan, Mar./Apr.). At Exod. 12:2 God tells Moses and Aaron that Abib (Nisan) is to be the first month of the year ( the beginning of months ; cf. 13:4; 23:15; 34:18; Deut. 16:1; also Exod. 40:2, 17). At 1 Kgs. 6:1 Ziv (Iyyar; Apr./May) is indicated as the second month, which would necessitate Nisan s being the first; similarly, at Jer. 36:22 Chislev (Nov./Dec.) is mentioned as the ninth month. Ezek. 40:1 contains the sole biblical reference to Rosh Hashanah (the later Jewish designation of the holiday), and Ezekiel s regular calendrical understanding includes a Nisan new year; here the term means simply the beginning (lit. head ) of the year. Lev. 25:9, however, refers to the advent of the Year of Jubilee in the fall, and Neh. 1:1; 2:1 put Chislev (ninth month) before Nisan (first) in the same year, perhaps implying an autumn new year. The Year of Jubilee does seem to reflect an agricultural calendar that may not be perceived as official, much like the modern fiscal or academic year (cf. Exod. 34:22b, which probably also reflects an agricultural cycle). Neh. 8:2, 14-15, by placing the autumn Feast of Booths in the seventh month, suggests that at that time the Israelites employed a calendar that began in the spring. In sum, the Old Testament references to the new year appear to be ambiguous and/or imprecise, although the scant concrete evidence leans toward a first of Nisan observance. It would appear, then, that in Israel the more significant religious celebrations so overshadowed any new year festival that few records survive. See YEAR. The New Testament is devoid of references to the new year. In postbiblical Judaism the first of Tishri was observed as the new year (Mishnah Ros Has ), a solemn occasion commemorating God s creation and a time for personal reflection (Yom ha-zikkaron Day of Remembrance ) and repentance. B. New, Newness (from Baker Encyclopedia of the Bible) New That the second part of the Bible is called the New Testament indicates how fundamental the idea of new is to biblical revelation. Many key theological expressions incorporate the idea: new creation (2 Cor 5:17), new birth (Jn 3:3), new man (Eph 2:15; Col 3:10), new commandment (Jn 13:34), new covenant (Jer 31:31), new life (Rom 6:4), and various others. The Expectation of the New Immediately after the fall, God speaks a new word of redemption in that he points to the time when the seed of woman shall bruise the head of the serpent (Gn 3:15). All of the OT elation is hence expressed in terms of future expectation of a new condition, a time when nation shall no longer lift up sword against nation (Is 2:4) and when the lion shall lie down with the lamb (Is 11:6). The idea of the new encompasses more than Israel: it involves God s whole creative purpose for all that he has created. Both Isaiah (43:19) and Jeremiah (31:22) speak of the new thing to be done in the nation s history.
C. From my personal study of Greek words (Various authors) There are 2 Greek words used for New in the New Testament 1. kainos (kahee-nos'); (used 45 X) denotes the new primarily in reference to quality, the fresh, unworn (1) Newly made, not impaired by time or use; skins used as containers (Matt. 9:17; Mark 2:22; Luke 5:38) grave, sepulcher (Matt. 27:60; John 19:41) garment (Luke 5:36) treasures new and old (Mt 13:52) (2) New, i.e., current or not before known, newly introduced teaching (Mark 1:27; Acts 17:19); Acts 17:21, to tell or to hear some new thing, meaning something that was not introduced until that time and thus different in the sense of other, commandment (John 13:34; 1 John 2:7, 8; 2 John 1:5) tongues (Mark 16:17) (see Acts 2:6, 8). (3) New as opposed to old or former and hence also implying better; Testament; meaning a new testament which is better than the old (Matt. 26:28; Mark 14:24; Luke 22:20; 1 Cor. 11:25; 2 Cor. 3:6; Heb. 8:8, 13; 9:15) Song; means a nobler, loftier strain (Rev. 5:9; 14:3; Ps. 33:3; 40:3; Is. 42:10). Heavens and a new earth (2 Pet. 3:13; Rev. 21:1; Is. 65:17; 66:22) refers to heaven and earth which have been renewed, and, therefore, made superior, more splendid; as also the new Jerusalem (Rev. 3:12; 21:2); I make all things new or nobler (Rev. 21:5) Metaphorically speaking of Christians who are renewed and changed from evil to good by the Spirit of God (2 Cor. 5:17; Gal. 6:15; Eph. 4:24); New heart, a transformed, saved heart (Ezek. 18:31; 36:26) 2. neos (neh'-os); "new" (used 23X) (Mt 9:17, 17; Mk 2:22, 22, 22; Lk 5:37, 37, 38; 15:12, 13; 22:26; Jn 21:18; Ac 5:6; 1 Co 5:7; Col 3:10; 1 Ti 5:1, 2, 11, 14; Tit 2:4, 6; Heb 12:24; 1 Pe 5:5) New, recent; new in relation to time, that which has recently come into existence or become present Of persons - regenerate Of things - fresh
