1 YESHIVA OF GREATER WASHINGTON TIFERES GEDALIAH Boys Division Passion for Learning PREPARATION FOR LIFE
2 OUR MISSION AT THE YESHIVA OF GREATER WASHINGTON TIFERES GEDALIAH IS TO ROOT EACH STUDENT IN TORAH, PLANT A PASSION FOR LEARNING, AND PREPARE THEM FOR LIFE. Passion for Learning PREPARATION FOR LIFE
3 INDIVIDUALIZED & PERSONAL ATTENTION The Yeshiva of Greater Washington Tiferes Gedaliah prides itself on teaching the whole child as a crucial component of its mission to play an integral part in building the future of Klal Yisroel. Rebbeim and teachers build lifetime ties by connecting with students on a personal level, while small classes enable the staff to cater to the individual needs of our students. The result is a well-rounded, well-educated graduate who is equipped and ready to make his contribution to the greater whole in both the religious and secular world. CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES YGW offers a wide array of co-curricu- lar activities to enhance an already outstanding education. The students learn leadership skills, team building, communal and personal responsibility, and have fun in the process. The talmidim go on shabbatons, do chesed throughout our community, enjoy interscholastic and intramural sports, and much, much more. YGW has a monthly Rosh Chodesh breakfast featuring awards and prizes for academic achievement and middos. Co-curricular clubs such as a newspaper, robotics club, and Krav Maga are offered every year. Additionally, YGW hosts Father and Son Learning programs preceding the Yomim Tovim. These programs tap into the individual strengths of our students and allow them to excel in other areas outside the classroom. STRONG DUAL CURRICULUM YGW boasts graduates who are accepted to the best yeshivos and universities. A YGW graduate succeeds at mastering a curriculum that stresses excellence in both Judaic and General Studies disciplines. Our shiurim are equal to those in many yeshivos throughout the country, with emphasis on independent learning and thinking and understanding the texts with meforshim. Our students are sought after by yeshivos throughout Eretz Yisroel. Our General Studies program boasts an average SAT score that is more than 200 points higher than the national average. College-level courses are taught and about 90% of Yeshiva students taking AP exams pass them with a score of 3 or above. GROWTH AND CONSISTENCY The Yeshiva of Greater Washington, which started over 50 years ago as a fledging institution with fewer than a dozen students, today boasts a continually growing student body in all three of its divisions. We have talmidim all over the world with a strong allegiance to YGW who serve their communities as Rabbonim, Roshei HaYeshiva, Askonim, doctors, lawyers and in many other capacities. CHESED PROGRAM Our talmidim practice what they learn! Whether building sukkahs, helping handicapped children, leading Shabbos groups, or visiting the elderly, students are willing and encouraged to help. Yeshiva of Greater Washington is a community school that relates to our community with respect and active concern for its needs. We do not only teach, we reach; in this way our students are taught responsibility to each other, their families, and the community at large. The Yeshiva Gedolah makes our school into much more than a high school. Its presence makes a bold statement that a true center of Torah exists here. Two schools under one roof more than augment each other, they form a seamless whole simply put, the Yeshiva Gedolah demonstrates through example, that Torah is a way of life. Alumnus
4 YGW HISTORY & OUR ROSH HAYESHIVA The Yeshiva High School was founded in 1963 by HaRav Gedaliah Anemer zt l and community leaders so that families in the Greater Washington area would have a local address for their children to receive a quality yeshiva education with separate divisions for boys and girls. The founding concept was to create an institution that would provide a high quality Judaic and general studies high school education. Beginning with a class of six students, the lay committee and rabbonim of the community appointed Rabbi Anemer as Rosh HaYeshiva, a position he held for more than forty years until his passing, to guide the institution with Daas Torah and a vision for the greater Washington Jewish community. Within a few years, YHS expanded to a full high school and in 1980 added the junior high school to become the Yeshiva of Greater Washington. In 1994 our Headmaster Rabbi Yitzchok Merkin together with Rabbi Anemer and the Board of Directors created the Yeshiva Gedolah, recruiting Rabbi Ahron Lopiansky to head the program. Housed on the Boys Campus, the Yeshiva Gedolah adds to the quality of the Boys Division by presenting role models, providing additional learning opportunities as well as tutorial assistance for our students. Many of the students have been attracted to the community creating a nucleus of young Torah-strong couples enriching the fabric of the community. This commitment to advanced Torah learning subsequently led to the founding of the Kollel Zichron Amram. In turn, these developments broadened YGW s scope to becoming a vehicle of disseminating Torah and its study throughout the Greater Washington area. YGW is proud to see hundreds of graduates for whom Torah is their life guide to reach both personal and professional success in all professions such as doctors, scientists, lawyers, social workers, electricians, rebbeim, rabbonim and kiruv professionals in communities around the world. On the occasion of our 50th anniversary, YGW was renamed Yeshiva of Greater Washington Tiferes Gedaliah (YGW), in memory of our founder, HaRav Gedaliah Anemer zt l. YGW is accredited by the Maryland State Department of Education, a member of Torah U Mesorah, and a partner agency of The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington. YGW defines itself by the absolute values and principles of the Torah as defined by the Rosh HaYeshiva. The Rosh HaYeshiva transmits these values to the leadership, staff and student body. Every member of the YGW organization espouses these values and principles, and they comprise the foundation upon which the institution operates. RABBI AHRON LOPIANSKY is the Rosh HaYeshiva of the Yeshiva of Greater Washington Tiferes Gedaliah. He studied and received rabbinic ordination from the Mir Yeshiva of Jerusalem and continues the mesorah of his rebbeim Rav Chaim Shmuelevitz ztz l, Rav Nachum Partzovitz ztz l and his late father-in-law HaRav Beinish Finkel, ztz l. In Israel, Rabbi Lopiansky taught at Aish HaTorah from , and then taught at the Mir for five years before assuming the post of Rosh Yeshiva of the Yeshiva Gedolah at YGW in Rabbi Lopiansky is a prolific author, having written more than 20 works on Torah thought, liturgy, and philosophy, and lectures widely both nationally and internationally. He has contributed to Encyclopedia Talmudis and assisted the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture. Rabbi Lopiansky is a founding editorial board member of Klal Perspectives, as well as a member of the editorial board of Dialogue. He was active in many broader outreach activities such as the Hishtalmut program of the Israeli Army, which seeks to broaden the perspective of the army s officer corps by exposing them to the entire gamut of Israeli society, and the dissemination of Torah to Soviet Jewry, having been one of the teachers to travel and teach in Soviet Russia. He was then active in helping resettlement organizations that assisted Soviet refuseniks in their physical and spiritual relocation to Israel. PHILOSOPHY & OBJECTIVES YGW s Vision Statements: We emphasize the primacy of Torah while providing a high quality general studies education. We develop each student s strengths through a close student/teacher relationship to provide the skills to succeed personally, professionally, and communally. We serve as a center of Torah learning for the Greater Washington Jewish Community. Expected Results of the YGW Experience: To live a life guided by Torah Committed to fulfilling the code of Jewish law Committed to Torah learning as a life-long pursuit To be a mentsch (a person of good character) Deal with the world with derech eretz respect, honesty and integrity Develop a strong sense of self-worth Show gratitude to HaShem and others To be a well-balanced and well-educated student in both Judaic and general studies Aspire to higher education in both Torah and secular studies at the best yeshivos and universities Communicate clearly, precisely and logically, both orally and in written form Develop strong, independent study, research and critical thinking skills
