19 SIDROT, SITES AND SOURCES A SHORT SERIES LINKING ISRAEL AND THE PARASHA OF THE WEEK BAMIDBAR Tel Dan This week s census data speaks of the tribe of Dan and this gives us the excuse to visit Park Tel Dan. The largest of the three main tributaries of the River Jordan is the Dan River, flowing strongly through the northern border region of Israel, both ancient and modern. It is little wonder then that it became a tribal focal point for Shevet Dan when they were forced to migrate from the coastal. The tribe wrested the town of Laish from the Phoenicians and took over their cultic practices: you can read the story in Judges 18: They diverted the streams into irrigation canals, but time and lush vegetation have made it difficult to distinguish between natural and man-made watercourses now. Once there was a working flour mill here, powered by the flow of the water and belonging to Abed - a- Salim of Shaba'a village north of the Park (Shaba'a Farms is a politically sensitive site). Now the nature reserve has been reopened the mill has been restored, but it is just for show. Today the park is one of Israel's gems, with picnic sites, well-marked paths and specimen trees identified for the curious - and everywhere the sight and sounds of bubbling streams of life giving (and very cold) water. For the archaeologically minded, the park is also the site of Tel Dan, the site of a Northern Kingdom temple, where Jereboam erected a calf statue to discourage worshipers from travelling to Jerusalem. Thanks to the work of famous Israeli archaeologist Avraham Biran, you can now see its gateway, walls, buildings and - perhaps - the bamah, the cultic 'high place' complete with horned altar, originally known in Arabic as Tel - el - Kadi, or the Hill of the Judge. Was the word Dan a corruption of Dayan, becoming in time Kedi? Whatever the reason, a visit to Park Tel Dan is truly memorable trip for adults and children alike. You can find the park signpost about 10 km east of Kiryat Shemona, on Route 99.

20 Much of the action in the Book of Ruth, which we read this week, takes place in Bethlehem. This was the city of that name within the tribal territory of Judah and is often named thus. This is to distinguish from the other Bethlehem, in the Galil (and possibly other towns of that name in ancient Israel). Bethlehem makes an earlier appearance in the Torah when Jacob, having left Lavan - for whom he had worked for twenty years- stopped there to bury his beloved wife Rachel, who had died in childbirth. It would appear that Bethlehem had a secondary name, Efrat - perhaps to distinguish it from the other Bethlehems. Today a new Jewish town of Efrat has grown up within Gush Etzion, housing many American and British families. The community was started by Rabbi Shlomo Riskin and has expanded rapidly in the last twenty years. These days, the construction of a new bypass road and a tunnel means that drivers need not pass through Bethlehem. NASO Ashkelon National Park This week the gifts of the tribal leaders to the Tabernacle are described in detail, much of it in shekels. There is a school of the thought that believes that the ancient city of Ashkelon was so called because the first shekel weights were made there. Whatever the truth, ancient Ashkelon lay on the southern coastal shore, between Evtah Stream and Shikma Stream. This location had many advantages, as it was an important trading station, thanks to its location on the ancient international route from Egypt and Syria (the Way of the Sea) and it had a convenient cross country route towards Jerusalem. The city was also blessed with an abundance of plentiful wells, a comfortable climate, and fertile soil. Ashkelon's strategic value in ancient times was priceless, because whoever controlled the city could block access from Egypt and the Sinai desert to the populated areas. Although Ashkelon had no natural bay, it appears that its residents were able to create a flourishing port already in the Canaanite period, making the city a desirable station on the maritime trade routes. Thus Ashkelon was an important city well before the arrival of the Phillistines and it maintained this status for thousands of years The National Park contains a Canaanite gate, built of mud and kurkar bricks. It is dated to 1850 BCE, a round the time of Abraham perhaps, and is considered to be the oldest vaulted gate in the world. The gate is built in the form of a 15 m long corridor, almost 4 m in height and more than 2 m wide. Carts, laden with goods and drawn by oxen and donkeys, probably passed through it on their way to and from the port. Outside the gate, on the slope leading down to the sea, a small temple was found in which there was a statuette of a calf, 10.5 cm high, made of bronze - one of the most beautiful finds from ancient Ashkelon. Worship of the calf is identified with the ritual of El or Baal, the father of the Canaanite gods.

21 The walls of Ashkelon, whose impressive remains still stand, were built by the Fatimid Muslims in the 12th century, to fortify the city against the Crusaders. The wall had four gates: Jerusalem Gate, Gaza Gate, Jaffa Gate, and Sea Gate, named for the directions in which they left the city. To reach the park, turn off Route 4 at Sderot David Ben Gurion, just keep heading towards the sea and follow the signs.
