1 TODAY'S GOOD FRIDAY Today' s concluding organ postlude, "The Crucifixion" was written by French organist, Marcel Dupre, in the year 92. Based on the chant, "At the cross her station keeping, stood the mother of Christ weeping", it is a piece illustrating the events of the first Good Friday. Dissonant harm onies and strange stops clearly express the horrific experience felt by Christ and his followers at Golgotha. The piece begins with the foot steps of Christ... starting His walk up Calvary. As He gets closer, the music intensifies until the whole organ plays as the big chords symbolize the nails piercing the hands and feet of Christ. As Christ dies, the music goes to the so fest stops on the organ and the pedal plays the chant Stabat Mater. Our thanks to Dr. Marsha Long for including this piece as a part of our Good Friday service and for these brief notes describing this piece for us.

5 . I I.. soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. 3 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. 33Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. 34 "Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, 35Jike a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man." 37 Every day he was teaching in the temple, and at night he would go out and spend the night on the Mount of Olives, as it was called. 38 And all the people would get up early in the morning to listen to him in the temple. 22 Now the festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was near. 2The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put Jesusx to death, for they were afraid of the people. 3 Then Satan entered into judas called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve; 4 he went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers of the temple police about how he might betray him to them. 5They were greatly pleased and agreed to give him money. 6So he consented and began to look for an opportunity to betray him to them when no crowd was sent. Then came the day of Unleavened cad, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. H So Jesus r sent Peter and john, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover meal for us that we may cat it." ~They asked him, "Where do you want us to make preparations for it?" IO"Listcn," he said to them, "when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of LUKE 2.3 water will meet you; follow him into the house he enters and say to the owner, 0 the house, 'The teacher asks vou' "Where is the guest _room, where I ~a~ eat the Passover wlth my disciples?~. 2He will show you a large room up.. stairs, already furnished. Make prepar<~tions for us there." 3 So they went and found everything as he had told them and they prepared the Passover meal. ' 4 When the hour came, he took his place at the table, and the apostles with him*s He said to them, "I have eagerh desired to eat this Passover with you be~ fore I suffer; 6for I tell you, I will not eat itz until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of ~o?..::j7then he t_oo~. a cup, ~nd after gtvmg thanks he satd, Take thts and divide it among yourselves; 8for I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." 9Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them; saying. "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. 20 And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. 2 But see, the one who betrays me is with me, and his hand is on the table. 22 For the Son of Man is going as it has been determined, but woe to that one by whom he is betrayed!" 23Then they began to ask one another, which one of them it could be who would do this. 24 A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 But he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those in authority over them arc called benefactors. 26 But not so with you; rather the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and t~e leader like one who serves. 27 For who IS greater, the one \vho is at the table or the one who serves? 7 A MAUNDY THURSDAY PRAYER ' ' ~- 'Help us, gracious Fatl'l.er, with open minds and con, trite hearts to feel our w~y into the mean~ng ~nd mystery of t~i.~ ni9'ht.; Quick~n our imagination to the.,end that what went on in that ~. Upper Room _may COIJle alive! f9,r us. ii ' For we would sit at table with the Twelve.and open ourselves to the close-up " presence of the. ~iving Christ. "The Lord Jesus, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread". ' We marvel at the mastery of One who on the evening of His own demise could avoid all thoughts of self and bend to the task of breaking bread for others. So s.trong in us if? the urge to "get even" that we can scarcely fathom sharing food and drink with one whom we know intends to do us harm. So brittle is our faith in the providence of God that we can only stand and stare when One whose ways are perfect shuns all complaining in His final hours and meekly asks Thy blessing on the meal. God, we do not sit in judgement on the Twelve for having hassled ~ith each other over who was greatest, for pride has often marred our work for Thee. We are not surprised that one by one that night they asked, when betrayal was announced, "Lord, is it I?" For, like us, they knew full well that under ample provocation any one of them could cash their Master in! Let this night for us be a night of resolution. Bless us with a renewed and enlarged awareness of our need for grace. A more honest reading of our frailty and sin. A hope-building confidence in the durability of bread and cup. A stretching of soul as we contemplate a "foolishness" with Thee that is wiser than men, and a "weakness" with Thee that is stronger than men. These prayers we offer now in trust and thankfulness, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. ( over )
