4 The Deuteronomistic History, according to scholarly theory, was written after the fact during the reign of King Josiah ( B.C.). Thus Deuteronomy, as the very words of Moses, is a pious fraud. The scholarly theory is that Josiah's political supporters created the book ("D") and merged it with the tribal histories of the southern ( J ) and northern ( E ) kingdoms to create a national history ("JED"). Later after Judah lost its independence, priestly rulers in Jerusalem added "P material to complete Deuteronomy through 2 Kings as we have it today.
