ROUTE 66 - DEUTERONOMY The Diary of a Dying Man Dr. Jon McNeff, Senior Pastor October 10, 2012 Note: The following are the pastor s notes used in teaching this message. This is not a complete, word-for-word transcription of what was taught. These notes serve as a companion to the complete message, which is available by listening to the audio version. Last wills and testaments are critical documents they tell the intentions of the person who has died people fight over them they contain surprises I. AUTHOR Deuteronomy 31:9 So Moses wrote this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. NASB Later Old Testament and New Testament statements also assume Mosaic authorship (Joshua 23:6; 1 Kings 2:3; Malachi 4:4; Matthew 19:7 8; Romans 10:19). Since the last chapter (Deuteronomy 34) contains an account of the death of Moses, it is assumed that his close associate and successor, Joshua, provided this postscript of Moses life. Joshua s assessment of Moses life is seen in the last three verses of the book in Deuteronomy 34:10-12 Since that time no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, (NASB) none like him for all the signs and the wonders that the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, and for all the mighty power and all the great deeds of terror that Moses did in the sight of all Israel. ESV Deuteronomy 31:24-26 provides a clear indication that Moses wrote the book and what he intended to do with it When Moses had finished writing the words of this law in a book to the very end, Moses commanded the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, Take this Book of the Law and put it by the side of the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there for a witness against you. it is possible that this is the scroll that Josiah found in 2 Kings 22: years later when repair work was being done on the Temple. II. TITLE The Hebrew name for the book was taken from the opening words of the book in the first verse of the first chapter elleh haddebarim meant the words or these are the words Deuteronomy is Greek word meaning second law used in the Septuagint (a Greek translation done in Alexandria, Egypt from 280 B.C. to 150 B.C. the name is ascribed to the mythical story that the translation of the Old Testament books was done by 70 scribes in 70 days no doubt a myth, but the title LXX, or Septuagint stuck though it contained books and writings that were never considered part of the Old Testament canon) the editors felt the book was the second giving of the law, thus they titled it Deuteronomy possibly a mistranslation from Septuagint of Deuteronomy 17:18 and 31:9 both refer to this law word there is torah came to refer to all of the first five books of the Old Testament but it s not a second giving of the law it s actually the preaching of the original law given to Israel at Sinai III. DATE AND SETTING The book of Deuteronomy recounts Moses words to the Israelites as they waited on the plains of Moab to enter Canaan. They had been there before, but had not been allowed to enter the land because of their unbelief and disobedience. God made them wait until they entered the Promised Land until they learned one lesson they must obey their God. Moses had led them throughout their wanderings in the wilderness. Now he knows that he is going to die before entering the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 32:50). The book is the account of Moses farewell speech his final remembrance of their journey from Sinai to Moab, and his plea for the people to remember the law of God and obey it. Since it is apparent that the book was written at the end of the 40 year journey in the wilderness, the date of writing would be around 1405 B.C. IV. DESCRIPTION Deuteronomy contains three sermons by Moses and two prophetic poems about Israel s future. After reflecting on their mistakes, he urges them not to repeat those mistakes upon entering the Promised Land, warning them that if they fall into idolatry or neglect God s law, they will be exiled from the land. 1

The book can be divided by Moses sermons: A. First sermon (Deuteronomy 1:5-4:40) First sermon (Deuteronomy 1:5-4:40) a review of their history, beginning with Mt. Sinai after arriving at Kadesh Barnea they failed to enter the land because of a scouting party that brought back reports of the strength of the cities and the enormous size of the people of the land. They were frightened and refused to enter. Thus, they wandered in the wilderness for the next 38 years. After arriving at Moab on the eastern side of the Jordan River, they defeated King Sihon of Moab and King Og of Bashan, and were now ready to move into Canaan. Moses ends his first sermon with an appeal to remain faithful to the law of God and renounce all pagan gods. B. Second sermon 1. First part (Deuteronomy 5:1-11:32) First part expands on the Ten Commandments and how they are to be applied to their lives Moses repeats the ten commandments of Exodus 20 almost word for word Why did God give the Law? it is the written record of what is in our heart Romans 2:14-15 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them everyone knows they shouldn t murder, rape, steal it is in our DNA! God just wrote it down why ten? summation of all law first five are vertical commands our relationship to God second five are horizontal our relationship to man in them God established and protected by law all the best things in life true theology and true worship, the name of God and the Sabbath, family honor, life, marriage, and property, truth and virtue this is the source of all civil, social, and religious law God spoke it; then wrote it down! no telegraph He then sets God s laws in context: The total commitment to the Lord (Deuteronomy 6:1 25) Separation from other gods (Deuteronomy 7:1 26) Warning against forgetting the Lord (Deuteronomy 8:1 20) Illustrations of past rebellion (Deuteronomy 9:1 10:11) Call to fear, love, and obey (Deuteronomy 10:12 11:32) 2. Second part (Deuteronomy 12:1-26:19) Sets forth the laws, rules, and regulations that will govern all aspects of life this is the section that many consider to have been the book of the Law discovered in the Temple in Jerusalem by the High Priest Hilkiah in the reign of King Josiah 700 years later in 2 Kings 22:1-23:30. This section ends with another plea to be faithful to the laws of God, assuring them that God will make them the greatest nation on earth if they do (Deuteronomy 26:16-19) The laws here govern the place of worship, clean and unclean food, tithes, the sabbatical year, Passover, the Feast of Weeks, the Feast of Booths, forbidden forms of worship (unclean and blemished), allowance for a king, priests and Levites, abominations, cities of refuge, property boundaries, witnesses, warfare, unsolved murders, inheritance, sexual immorality, uncleanness, divorce, Levirate marriage (dead brother s wife), firstfruits and tithes C. Promises and warnings (Deuteronomy 27-28) Section on promises for following the Law and warnings if they do not Deuteronomy Key problem noted in Deuteronomy 28:1 And if you faithfully obey the voice of the Lord your God... they didn t they sinned terribly Deuteronomy 28:49-51 picture of destruction by Rome (eagle) until you are destroyed (Hadrian 150 A.D.) Masada (v. 52) Some say this negated God s promises to them say they are given to the church but God makes His promises to Israel forever Romans 11:1,2 I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By 2

no means! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew... Romans 11: 5, 11, 17-18, 22, Romans 11:24-25 For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree. Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. D. Third sermon (Deuteronomy 29-30) Renews the covenant given at Sinai (Deuteronomy 29:10-15) and appeal to choose life, not death (Deuteronomy 30:19-20) E. Conclusion (Deuteronomy 31-34) Includes a plea to be strong in his absence (Deuteronomy 31:1-6), the installation of Joshua as his successor (Deuteronomy 31:7-15), the Lord s last instructions to Moses (Deuteronomy 31:16-23), Moses instructions for the preservation of his writing because of the future rebellion of the people (Deuteronomy 31:24-29), the song of Moses (Deuteronomy 32:1-43), Moses final instructions (Deuteronomy 32:44-47), the notification of his impending death (Deuteronomy 32:48-52), his final blessing of the people (Deuteronomy 33), and Joshua s account of Moses death (Deuteronomy 34) V. THEOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS A. God chooses man God reminds them repeatedly of His sovereign care for them: Deuteronomy 7:6-8 For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. The Lord did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but because the Lord loved you and kept the oath which He swore to your forefathers, the Lord brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. NASB Deuteronomy 10:14-15 Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it. Yet on your fathers did the Lord set His affection to love them, and He chose their descendants after them, even you above all peoples, as it is this day. NASB Deuteronomy 14:2 For you are a people holy to the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. God gave victory over Sihon the King of the Amorites and Og, the King of Bashan the last two kings that stood in the way of Israel Deuteronomy 3:2 Do not fear him, for I have given him and all his people and his land into your hand God promised to drive out all the nations before them (Deuteronomy 9:6, 13; 10:16; 31:27) The fate of Israel lies squarely in God s hands (Deuteronomy 28:15) God hardens the hearts of kings and pharaohs (Deuteronomy 2:30) He reigns over the lying lips of false prophets (Deuteronomy 13:3) He gives and takes away understanding from the minds of his people (Deuteronomy 29:4) God s actions are never the result of our worth or actions Deuteronomy 9:4-5 indicates it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out before you and that he may confirm the word that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. This is not the God who helps those who help themselves. God acts for His own purposes. He is in complete control even over those who would do evil and distort the truth. 3

The rap against the sovereignty of God is that this is not a loving doctrine yet Deuteronomy 7:7 and Deuteronomy 10:15 expressly state that God chose Israel because of His love for them. Remember this is always set in the context of man s rebellion against God. We think somehow we deserve God s love but that is not the case. Romans 3:10-12 is clear that no one seeks him. Ephesians 2:1-7 states we were dead in (y)our trespasses and sins....but God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. People ultimately rebel against this doctrine because they think they can do something to gain salvation on their own. It is clear in Deuteronomy that God chose Israel among all the nations of the earth simply because of His divine plan to bring them into existence, provide for them, and bless them despite their sin. God did not choose them because of their righteousness or numerical strength. He chose them because of His eternal plan. B. Man chooses God Along with the clear evidence of God s sovereignty, Deuteronomy is a clear call to obey God s law. God chooses us but we must choose Him. Deuteronomy 4:1-2 And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, is giving you. 2 You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you. look at the imperatives listen, do, do not add a word that I command you, keep these imperatives reveal our part in responding to God s sovereign call we are not robots we are called to respond in obedience Deuteronomy 10:12-13 And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord, which I am commanding you today for your good? Deuteronomy 30:19-20 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them. Works will not save anyone but they are evidence of the fact we have been graciously chosen by God C. The importance of the law The New Testament contains more than 80 quotations from Deuteronomy Jesus often quoted from it: During the wilderness temptation He answered Satan s temptations every time from Scripture three of these were from Deuteronomy Matthew 4:3 1) when Satan said, command these stones to become bread Jesus responded from Deuteronomy 8:3 Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. 2) in Matthew 4:7 when Satan told Him to throw Himself down from the pinnacle of the Temple, Jesus replied, You shall not put the Lord your God to the test. 3) in Matthew 4:10 when Satan promised Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if he would worship him, Jesus answered from Deuteronomy 6:13 saying, You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only. When Jesus was asked to name the most important commandment in the Law in Matthew 22:39, He responded with the familiar call from Deuteronomy 6:5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might. He added the weight of the Law from Leviticus 19:18 by stating, The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The Law was a gift to Israel no other nation received it the Law reveals how God wants us to live the Law is not only given by God, it is instinctively known in the heart of man (Romans 2:14-15 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even 4

though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them D. Learning from the law Great misunderstanding of Old Testament law attempts to live by it end in sectarian legalism no one can live up to its demands attempts to ignore it end up in secularism 1. The law doesn t save Galatians 2:16 a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. 2. The law is a tutor The Law is a tutor Galatians 3:24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. 3. Obedience brings life Obedience brings life Deuteronomy 30:19 choose life in order that you might live NASB - through obeying the law yet Romans 7:11 For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. Deuteronomy, which presents itself as a written authoritative law for Israel in its land is the first book to see itself as Scripture (Deuteronomy 17:19 20; 28:58; 29:19; 31:11). Deuteronomy, which sees Israel s future as determined by its observance of the Law, shaped the development of early Judaism. This book, more than any other, enabled ancient Israel to survive the loss of its religious and cultural institutions during the Babylonian crisis. It made the Law the preeminent and life-giving religious institution for Israel. V. OUTLINE I. Introduction: The Historical Setting of Moses Sermons (1:1 4) II.
