According to the English calendar, this year Hanukah begins the night of November 28th and lasts through December 6th. There appears to be both a seasonal and historical origin to Hanukah. The historical origin relates to the Maccabees' revolt and victory over the Hellenistic Syrians who occupied the land of Israel around 165 BCE. Also, the miracle refers to the rededication of the Temple when o n ly one bottle of sacramental oi I, enough to last one day, was found and it miraculo.usly lasted for eight days. The seasonal origin of Hanukah refe~s to a ki nd of established winter festival that occurred at this season. Another seasonal origin had to do with the kindling of a fire, reported as an ancient Jewish custom at the dedication of the Temple ahar. The Hanukah Holiday Workshop will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 18 from 1:30-3 p.m. at the Squirrel Hill Center. The Workshop will cover the traditions and customs associated with Hanukah by means of an oral presentation, written material and visual aids. These are meant to assist each family to create a special holiday feeling in the home. Also, participants will have the opportunity to discuss and ask questions concern ing the holiday. The lounge is on the second floor, Jewish Community Center. Family Workshops Offered On Shabbat The Jewish Community Center is again setting up Shabbat Home Workshops. The purpose is to supply fami lies in the community with ideas, materials and other resources for their enjoyment in celebrating Shabbat at home. Each workshop offers basic i nformation about the concept of Shabbat. The emphasis is on Friday night as a family get together in a re laxed atmosphere. Center families are asked to host other families. The format is to invite three or four more families. Then a Center staff member comes to your home to teach such things as Shabbat songs and stories, arts and crafts projects based on Shabbat th emes, and such traditionai projects.. a~. Chal ' <!~.. making and candle making. Booklets of in formation on celebrating Shabbat in the home will be given to fam ilies who participate. Staff members of the Jewish Community Center will assist in conducting the workshops. If you are interested in hosting or participating in a Shabbat Home Workshop, call Rachel Marcus or Gerson Silver at L'Chaim Campaign For Health Center Is 'Right On Target' Center Stage Does 'Split' Series, Family Life Vignettes The dedication of the Richard Novick lounge at the Jewish Community Center October 12, involved several generations of the family. Novick; the The Center Stage Players of the Novicks' aunt, Mrs. Meyer Braun; Diane Novick, age 15; and her mother Mrs. Jewish Community Center will present--- Richard Novick. Shirley Katz's production of "The Split" in McKeesport, Nov. 9; Beaver, Nov. 19; Greensburg, Dec. 7 and the Eastern suburbs, Dec. 14. This is being done in cooperation with the Community Services Department of the United Jewish Federation of Great er Pittsburgh. " The Split," first presented at the Jewish Family & Children's Service's annual meeting in April, 197 5, is a series of dramatic family life vignettes. These are a poignant and moving portrayal of divorce as it touches the Jewish community. Following the presentation of "The Split" a panel discusses the impact of divorce on the Jewish community and the questions it raises about the future of Jewish family life. Center Stage Players appearing in the performance of "The Split" include Soralie Goldfarb, Nat Elbaum, Elliot Alber, Maurice Braunstein, Vicki Katz and Shirley Katz. The Center Stage Players are an amateur theatrical group of the Jewish Community Center. The Richard Novick Lounge in the Oakland Jewish Community Center was dedicated Sunday, October 12, by Harold Gondelman, President of the Center. The Lounge is a family memorial to the late Richard Novick who passed away a year ago. Shortly after that, members of the late Mr. Novick's family decided to establish an appropriate memorial in cooperation with the Jewish Community Center. " In addition to establish ing the Lounge as a memorial to Richard, it is also an expression of the family's keen interest in the Center and in their commun ity," said Ivan J. Novick, brother of the late Mr. Novick and family spokesperson. Those involved in th e Richard Novick Lounge are : Mr. and Mrs. Meyer Braun, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Breman, Mrs. Renee Novick, Mrs. Jane Berman, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Auslander and Mr. and Mrs. Ivan J. Novick. President Harold Gondelman noted that the new Lounge is part of a cont inuing tradition of "adding onto a building with a lot of history." He put this into the context of a passage from the Ethics Of Th e Fathers : " It is not Thy duty to complete the work, but neither art thou free to desist from it." The Novick Lounge, on the second floor of the Oakland Center, is "a blend of contemporary furnishings in a t raditional setting of high ceilings and good moldings," according to Pittsburgh decorator Garth Massengill. Hand1 nade benches of ash and " Leathermica" topped tab les on brushed st'ee l pedestals are arranged through the room wh ich extends along the Bellefield Avenue sid e of th e building from the huge fireplace to the glass doors of the Hyman Rogal Room. For illumination there are pewter-finished chandeliers and wall sconces. During the day, softly diffused light filters through floor-to-ceiling windows. These are covered with light, cord-split bamboo shades. The total effect of the Richard Novick Lounge is an area that is soft, elegantly simple and graceful. Green, Stept and Schwartz are pleased to report that the goal of 200 new Health Center m embers by completion of the current campaign, Dec. 31, is right on target. Wayne Schwartz To date there are over 75 new members since the start of the campaign on Sept. 1. Although the membership campaign trio are hard at work telling the community about the bargain of becoming a Health Center member, the Health Center faci lity makes their sales pitch an easy one. When guests walk through the doors on the fourth floor of the Oak land Center they are immediately met by a staff of Health Center pros who are ready to se rve their every need and make their visit seem like a warm homecoming. Then it's a workout on th e courts or in th e Lou Little Gym, a steam or sauna treat ment, a dip in th e Roman style [Con tinued on Page 6]
