What s a Psalm? The Book of Psalms is the first book of the Ketuvim ("Writings"), the third section of the Hebrew Bible, and a book of the Christian Old Testament. The title is derived from the Greek translation, ψαλμοί psalmoi, meaning "instrumental music" and, by extension, "the words accompanying the music." The book, or Psalter, is an anthology of individual psalms, with 150 in the Jewish and Western Christian tradition and more in the Eastern Christian churches. They are divided into five books or parts, probably in a way that corresponded with the Torah: Book 1 (Psalms 1 41) 37 psalms are attributed to David Book 2 (Psalms 42 72) 18 are attributed Book 3 (Psalms 73 89) 1 is attributed Book 4 (Psalms ) 2 are attributed Book 5 (Psalms ) 15 are attributed There are seventy-three attributed to David. Most are collected together in the first two books. Psalms uses parallelism as its primary poetic device. Parallelism is a kind of symmetry, in which an idea is developed by the use of restatement, synonym, amplification, grammatical repetition, or opposition. Synonymous parallelism involves two lines expressing essentially the same idea. An example of synonymous parallelism: The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1). Two lines expressing opposites is known as antithetic parallelism. An example of antithetic parallelism: And he led them in a cloud by day/ and all the night by a fiery light (Psalm 78:14). Two clauses expressing the idea by amplifying the first claim is known as expansive parallelism. An example of expansive parallelism: My mouth is filled with your praise/ all the day with your lauding (Psalm 71:8). The longest chapter in Psalms is Psalm 119; the shortest is Psalm 117 (the numerical midpoint of the Christian Bible). The following chronology assigns 21 Psalms to specific events in David s life Page 5 of 10
The country boy makes good childhood through age BC: David is born in Bethlehem BC: David is anointed by Samuel (1 Sam 16) at age King Saul undoubtedly hears about this and later chooses to keep David nearby for observation and ready dispatch. Ps 23, BC: David, now barmizvah d, serves King Saul in an ad hoc medical musical capacity (1 Sam 16:17) playing the harp to lift the King s depression. David returns to his father's house to tend sheep, but comes to Saul when needed (1 Sam 17:15) BC: David defeats Goliath (1 Sam 17). Saul s son Jonathan, who is at least a decade older than David, becomes one-in-spirit with David (1 Sam 18:1). Ps 54, BC: Because of his rising reputation, David is appointed armor-bearer to King Saul (1 Sam 16:21). GOD, my shepherd! I don t need a thing. You have bedded me down in lush meadows, you find me quiet pools to drink from. True to your word, you let me catch my breath and send me in the right direction. 4 Even when the way goes through Death Valley, I m not afraid when you walk at my side. Your trusty shepherd s crook makes me feel secure. 5 You serve me a six-course dinner right in front of my enemies. You revive my drooping head; my cup brims with blessing. 6 Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life. I m back home in the house of GOD for the rest of my life. PSALM 23 What are some upsides of early accomplishments and fame? What might be some down-sides? Page 6 of 10
A decade of running 1010 BC: Saul banishes David from his court, yet he makes him commander of a thousand (1 Sam 18:13) BC: At Jonathan's warning, David flees from Saul to Samuel at Ramah (1 Sam 19). An evil spirit caused Saul to pursue David. Ps BC: David and Jonathan covenant together at Ramah (1 Sam 20). David flees to Nob and is helped by Ahimelech the priest (1 Sam 21). He gives David the consecrated bread, and the sword of Goliath. Doeg the Edomite is present. Ps 56. David flees to Achish, king of the Philistine city of Gath (1 Sam 21:10). Ps BC: David hides at the Cave at Adullam (1 Sam 22:1-5). His father s household joins him there. Ps 142. Doeg the Edomite, at Saul s command, kills Ahimelech the priest who helped David and his men. Ps 52. Jonathan visits David at Ziph and covenants with him again (1 Sam 23:16). Ziphites betray David, but God hides him from Saul in the Desert of Ziph. Ps 63. Saul pursues David at en-gedi. David cuts off a corner of Saul s robe in the cave near the Crags of the Wild goats. When Saul leaves the cave, David pleads his cause and his intent not to harm Saul (1 Sam 24). Ps God, for your sake, help me! Use your influence to clear me. Listen, God I m desperate. Don t be too busy to hear me. 3 Outlaws are out to get me, hit men are trying to kill me. Nothing will stop them; God means nothing to them. 4-5 Oh, look! God s right here helping! GOD s on my side, Evil is looping back on my enemies. Don t let up! Finish them off! 6-7 I m ready now to worship, so ready. I thank you, GOD you re so good. You got me out of every scrape, and I saw my enemies get it BC: David encounters Saul and his Psalm men in his camp at Hakilah, having been betrayed by the Ziphites a second time. Ps 54 He spares Saul s life again (1Sam 26). What are the daily fears associated with life on the run? Page 7 of 10
The years of favor 1000 BC: Samuel dies (1 Sam 28:3). In a battle with the Philistines on Mt. Gilboa, three of Saul s sons die; Saul is wounded and falls on his sword (1 Sam 31). David with the help of his allies assumes control of Judah, and is anointed its king with Hebron as his capital (2 Sam 2:7). He reigns for 7 years and 6 months (2 Sam 2:11). 997 BC: David conquers Jerusalem (2 Sam 5:6). He rebuilds it, and moves there from Hebron. 993 BC: David is publicly anointed king over all of Israel, north and south (2 Sam 5:17). Ps 18. David s 33-year reign at Jerusalem begins (1 Chr 3:4). 992 BC: The Ark returns to Jerusalem to a tent (2 Sam 6). David desires to build a temple to house the Ark (2 Sam 7; 1 Chr 17). God sends Nathan to David with the Davidic Covenant instead, promising a perpetual throne to his offspring (2 Sam 7:12-29). Ps 105, BC: Ammon and Syria are conquered by Joab and Abishai after David s ambassadors are humiliated by the young king of Ammon (2 Sam 10).Ps 60. What are the emotions that arise when a losing team finally has a winning streak? 1-2 I love you, GOD you make me strong. GOD is bedrock under my feet, the castle in which I live, my rescuing knight. My God the high crag where I run for dear life, hiding behind the boulders, safe in the granite hideout. 3 I sing to GOD, the Praise-Lofty, and find myself safe and saved. 4-5 The hangman s noose was tight at my throat; devil waters rushed over me. Hell s ropes cinched me tight; death traps barred every exit. 6 A hostile world! I call to GOD, I cry to God to help me. From his palace he hears my call; my cry brings me right into his presence a private audience! 7-15 Earth wobbles and lurches; huge mountains shake like leaves, Quake like aspen leaves because of his rage. His nostrils flare, bellowing smoke; his mouth spits fire. Tongues of fire dart in and out; he lowers the sky Psalm 18 Page 8 of 10
Family troubles 980 BC: While indulging his children, and allowing his generals to run their own war, David falls prey to the temptations of the flesh, of peace, and of plenty: he sleeps with Bathsheba (2 Sam 11). Uriah is slain in April. In December, Nathan confronts David and he repents. The child born to Bathsheba dies (2 Sam 11-12) Ps 32, BC: Solomon is born, youngest of David s sons, and future heir to the throne. 977 BC: in retribution of the rape of his sister, Absalom murders his half-brother Amnon (2 Sam 13:23-38). He is banished from the king s presence to Geshur. 974 BC: Absalom pleads for and is returned to Jerusalem via Joab s intercession and some acting by the woman of Tekoa (2 Sam 14); but he remains banished for 2 more years. He begins his 4-year plot against David. (2 Sam 15:1-7). 969 BC: Absalom s revolt steals the hearts of the people from David (2 Sam 15-19). Shimei, a relative of Saul, curses David on his way out of the city. While riding a mule, Absalom s hair is caught in a tree where he hangs helplessly (2 Sam 18:14) until slain by Joab, against David s wishes. David mourns his son s death. (2 Sam 19:1). Ps 3 A threeyear famine occurs as a result of Saul s attack on the Gibeonites (2 Sam 21:1). David makes amends with the Gibeonites by having seven sons of Saul executed except Jonathan s son, Mephibosheth, whom he vowed to protect (2 Sam 21:2-14). What do you think contributed to the dysfunction in David s family? God! Look! Enemies past counting! Enemies sprouting like mushrooms, Mobs of them all around me, roaring their mockery: hah! No help for him from God! But you God shield me on all sides; You ground my feet, you lift my head high; With all my might I shout up to God, His answers thunder from the holy mountain. I stretch myself out. I sleep. Then I m up again rested, tall and steady. Fearless before the enemy mobs coming at me from all sides. Up, God! My God help me! Slap their faces, first this cheek then the other, Your fist hard in their teeth! Real help comes from God. Your blessing clothes your people. Psalm 3 Page 9 of 10
The Final Curtain 965 BC: In a skirmish with the Philistines, David is almost killed by a giant. He is asked to stay home for his own safety (2 Sam 21:15-22). 964 BC: David takes a census of the people (2 Sam 24:10). Joab, curiously, is the voice of reason here, asking David not to do it. David repents of it, but God sends a pestilence that kills 70,000 (2 Sam 24:15). David gathers all the materials in order to build a Temple according to the pattern God shows him (1Chr 22; 28). Ps 30. I give you all the credit, GOD you got me out of that mess, you didn t let my foes gloat. 2-3 GOD, my God, I yelled for help and you put me together. GOD, you pulled me out of the grave, gave me another chance at life when I was down-and-out. 963 BC: David commissions Solomon with the task of the Temple s construction (1Chr 22:6-19). 962 BC: David s health begins to fail him (1Kgs 1:1-4). Abishag is sought to serve him and keep him warm in his old age. Adonijah, 4th born son of David, attempts a coup with Joab. At Nathan s insistence, Bathsheba convinces David to declare Solomon king-in-waiting and have him assume the throne (1 Chr 23:1; 26:31). David agrees. 960 BC: David calls for a National Assembly, and passes to Solomon his pattern for the temple (1 Chr 28). He exhorts the people to give willingly, in joyful worship (1 Chr 29:10-20). David instructs Solomon to walk with God, and after his death, to deal with Joab and Shimei, the traitors (1 Kgs 2:1-98). David dies a natural death at age 70ish. David is buried in Jerusalem (1 Kgs 2:10-12; 1 Chr 29:26-30), having served God s purposes in his own generation (Ac 13:22, 36). What does it mean to serve God s purposes? All you saints! Sing your hearts out to GOD! Thank him to his face! He gets angry once in a while, but across a lifetime there is only love. The nights of crying your eyes out give way to days of laughter. 6-7 When things were going great I crowed, I ve got it made. I m GOD s favorite. He made me king of the mountain. Then you looked the other way and I fell to pieces I called out to you, GOD; I laid my case before you: Can you sell me for a profit when I m dead? auction me off at a cemetery yard sale? When I m dust to dust my songs and stories of you won t sell. So listen! and be kind! Help me out of this! You did it: you changed wild lament into whirling dance; You ripped off my black mourning band and decked me with wildflowers. I m about to burst with song; I can t keep quiet about you. GOD, my God, I can t thank you enough. Psalm 30 Page 10 of 10
