Andrew Stepp Second Samuel
We may be smart, but we are not as smart as we think we are. We may be insightful at times, but we are not as brilliant as we imagine. We have a thimbleful of biblical knowledge compared to the ocean of wisdom in the works of these dead people. So let us be humble, grateful, and open to learning from them.
Review of First Samuel Intro to Second Samuel A Snapshot of David A Simple Outline for 2 Samuel What are we to make of this guy? Weekly Readings

Continuity between 1 and 2 Samuel between Samuel and Kings
1 Samuel (The FIRST book of the Kings ) & 2 Samuel 1 Kings & 2 Kings 1 Samuel begins with the last judge (1100 BC) who anoints the first two kings 2 Kings ends with the last king and Israel s destruction by Babylon. (587 BC) These are FORMER PROPHETS God s perspective on the history of his people The covenant s perspective *
* The key to understanding the former and latter prophets is Deuteronomy!
Samuel (1-7) Saul anointed and fails as king (8-15) David anointed and is on the run! (16-31) *1 Sam. covers Samuel s birth around 1100 BC to the end of Saul s kingship in 1012 BC
God The ultimate good guy (THE Hero!) Samuel God s right-hand-man Saul the forgettable and unstable first king David the young up-and-comer Bonus: The Philistines
All David, All the Time
The youngest of seven brothers (1 Sam 16:7) David is the most significant ancestor of Jesus. Greatest king of Israel, reigning 40 years (7 yrs in Hebron; 33 in Jerusalem) Warrior, king, musician, artist, etc. Around half of the psalms are attributed to him Died at 70 yrs old ( )
His anointing When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, Surely the LORD s anointed is now before the LORD. But the LORD said to Samuel, Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the LORD does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart (1 Sam 16:6-7) I have found David, son of Jesse, to be a man after my heart (Acts 13:22) Eschatology Looking for the Eternal King from David s lineage (John 7:42) Outside of Jesus, David is arguably THE most important character!
His anointing He is a faithful shepherd, striking down lions and bears David and Goliath His allegiance and respect for Saul He won t kill God s anointed even though the latter is trying to kill him! His faithfulness to Yahweh above all else!
David s Triumphs (1-10) David s Troubles (11-24)
The capital is moved from Hebron to Jerusalem. He defeats the Jebusites and brings the Ark to Jerusalem. The ark is moved to Jerusalem (Ch. 6)
The covenant is renewed (2 Sam 7). David and God dialogue about a house (2 Sam 7:1-2, 4-16). David s humility and gratitude is shown in his response (2 Sam 7:18-29).
In the course of time, David defeated the Philistines and subdued them defeated the Moabites. defeated Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah at the Euphrates River When the Arameans came to help David struck down twenty-two thousand of them When Tou king of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer, 10 he sent his son Joram to King David to greet him and congratulate him on his victory in battle over Hadadezer, who had been at war with Tou. Joram brought with him articles of silver, of gold and of bronze King David dedicated these articles to the LORD, as he had done with the silver and gold from all the nations he had subdued: 12 Edom and Moab, the Ammonites and the Philistines, and Amalek The LORD gave David victory wherever he went!
David s Conquests Saul s Kingdom vs. David s Kingdom
TROUBLE! (CHAPTERS 11-24) In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king s men and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem. 2 One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing
TROUBLE #1: BATHSHEBA Not doing his job (11:1) Lust and adultery (11:2-5) Deception and murder (6-27) Consequences? Nathan the prophet (12:1-13) Death of the baby son Restoration: God gives another son Solomon/Jedidiah
TROUBLE #2: AMNON (CH. 13) Amnon, David s son, is in love with his half-sister Tamar and rapes her. Tamar s brother murders Amnon Restoration? Joab schemes with Absalom for him to return to Jerusalem, but he is not allowed to ever be in the presence of the king.
TROUBLE #3: ABSALOM OVERTHROWS DAVID Ahithophel, David s counselor, betrays him and goes to Absalom. David flees Jerusalem in one of the saddest scenes in all of Scripture. (15:13-37) Absalom assumes the throne, builds a monument to himself, and sleeps with his father s concubines in the sight of all Israel. (16:22) After a fierce battle in which David s army defeats the Israelites (22,000) died, Absalom s hair gets tangled in an oak tree as he flees on his mule and is killed by Joab, David s commander. And David grieves (18:19-19:8)
Trouble #4: Sheba s rebellion against David (Ch. 20) Trouble #5: The Gibeonites take vengeance on Saul s household (21:1-14) Trouble #6: More Battles with the Philistines; David runs out of gas (21:15-22) Trouble #7: Census of Warriors (24:1-25)
The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want... (Psalm 23) The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom should I fear... (Psalm 27) I lift my eyes to the mountains from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth... (Psalm 121) Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. (Psalm 51) 2 Samuel 22 David s Song of Praise
Option 1: 2 Samuel 1-24 = 5,5,5,5,4 Option 2: 1-4 David takes power 6-7 The Ark and God s Promise to David David and Bathsheba Absalom David s song of Praise and His Mighty Men
