Review - Israel asks for a king Saul is annointed as the first king Saul fails miserably David is anointed as the second king David kills Goliath
1 Samuel 18
From that day Saul kept David with him and did not 3 let him return home to his family. And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. 4 Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt. Whatever mission Saul sent him on, David was so successful that Saul gave him a high rank in the army. This pleased all the troops, and Saul s officers as well. 5 1 Samuel 18:2-5 (NIV)
When the men were returning home after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out from all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs and with timbrels and lyres. 7 As they danced, they sang: Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands. 1 Samuel 18:6-7 (NIV)
Saul was very angry; this refrain displeased him greatly. They have credited David with tens of thousands, he thought, but me with only thousands. 9 What more can he get but the kingdom? And from that time on Saul kept a close eye on David. 1 Samuel 18:8-9 (NIV)
The next day an evil spirit from God came forcefully on Saul. He was prophesying in his house, while David was playing the lyre, as he usually did. Saul had a spear 11 in his hand and he hurled it, saying to himself, I ll pin David to the wall. But David eluded him twice. Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with David but had departed from Saul Samuel 18:10-12 (NIV)
So he sent David away from him and gave him command over a thousand men, and David led the 14 troops in their campaigns. In everything he did he had great success, because the Lord was with him. 15 When Saul saw how successful he was, he was afraid of 16 him. But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he led them in their campaigns. 1 Samuel 18:13-16 (NIV)
When Saul realized that the Lord was with David and 29 that his daughter Michal loved David, Saul became still more afraid of him, and he remained his enemy the rest of his days. The Philistine commanders continued to go out to battle, and as often as they did, David met with more success than the rest of Saul s officers, and his name became well known Samuel 18:28-30 (NIV)

1 Samuel 24 A snapshot of Saul & David s dysfunctional relationship
After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he 2 was told, David is in the Desert of En Gedi. So Saul took three thousand able young men from all Israel and set out to look for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats. 1 Samuel 24:1-2 (NIV)
He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his 4 men were far back in the cave. The men said, This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said to you, I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish. 1 Samuel 24:3-4 (NIV)
Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul s robe. Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having 6 cut off a corner of his robe. He said to his men, The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is 7 the anointed of the Lord. With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way. 5 1 Samuel 24:4-7 (NIV)
Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, My lord the king! When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with 9 his face to the ground. He said to Saul, Why do you listen when men say, David is bent on harming 10 you? This day you have seen with your own eyes how the Lord delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, I will not lay my hand on my lord, because he is the Lord s anointed. 1 Samuel 24:8-10 (NIV)
See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. See that there is nothing in my hand to indicate that I am guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life. 1 Samuel 24:11 (NIV)
When David finished saying this, Saul asked, Is that 17 your voice, David my son? And he wept aloud. You are more righteous than I, he said. You have treated 18 me well, but I have treated you badly. You have just now told me about the good you did to me; the Lord delivered me into your hands, but you did not kill me. 19 When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the Lord reward you well for 20 the way you treated me today. I know that you will surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands. 1 Samuel 24:16-20 (NIV)
We are called to live faithfully in the in between.
The Final Contrast 1 Samuel 30 David defeats the Amalekites 1 Samuel 31 Saul and his sons die at the hands of the Philistines So Saul and his three sons and his armor-bearer and all his men died together that same day. 1 Samuel 31:6 (NIV)
