Chapter 12 - Overview God s call of Abram to the land of Canaan and the associated promises (v1-3) Abram s obedience to this call (v4-5) Abram s welcome to the land of Canaan (v6-9) Abram s sojourn in Egypt Abram s fear and reactionary plan (v10-13) Sarai s danger and deliverance (v14-20)
Ch Takeaways We are all broken, even the best of us Strengthen the bond to God (Seek Him) through OBEDIENCE and have faith in his promises When we make our name it is often initially due to accomplishment, stature (physical or financial), or even infamy but it is always temporary (scandal, or someone MORE than whatever we were). When God makes our name it is either associated positively with faithfulness and obedience, or negatively for a lack of these
God Ordains Who to Use Difference between Holy Ordinance and Human Choice Use of the imperfect (our faulty image of who is best qualified and the relationship to the Knowledge of Good and Evil) Though our humanity never ceases, faith grows when you see God for who He truly is God can use actions we see as mistakes

Chapter 13 - Overview Discord Between the Houses of Abram and Lot (v1-9) Lot Chooses a Homeland (v10-13) Third Reiteration of the Promise by God to Abram (v11-18)
Chapter 13 - Takeaways Be wary, lest your pursuit and accumulation of things separate you from those you love (stewardship, not ownership) When faced with choices, avoid the immediate emotional, or flesh-appealing logical response, having power over the patient seeking of God s insight
Chapter 14 - Overview War of the Kings results in conquest and capture of Lot (v1-12) Abram, with 318 trained men, rescues Lot and all the taken spoils from captivity (v13-16) Abram is offered reward but declines (v17-24)
Chapter 14 - Takeaways Lot s choice of the better land put him in jeopardy due to the actions of others. Abram could have easily left Lot to his own devices after the decision to separate, but his love for his brother caused him to intervene After victory was won, Abram declined to be rewarded to avoid credit for his wealth being given to the kings instead of God. He did however allow the fighters to take their share for their effort

Where We Are: Chs The Story of Abraham Call, Covenant, and Name Change (Chs ) Sodom & Gomorrah Destroyed; Lot Delivered (Ch ) Abimelech deceived (Ch. 20) Early Lives of Isaac and Ishmael (Ch. 21) Sacrifices of Abraham and Isaac (Ch. 22) Death of Sarai (Ch. 23) Betrothal of Isaac and Rebekah (Ch. 24) Abraham Dies & the Sons of Ishmael and Isaac (Ch. 25)
Chapter 15 - Overview God Promises Abram a Son and Descendants which outnumber the Stars (v1-5) God describes Abram as righteous due to his belief (v6) God ratifies the covenant with Abram (v7-21) Oppression and alienation prophesied (v13) Judgment upon the oppressor prophesied and material blessings to come (v14) After four generations the descendants will return and take the land (v16)
Chapter 15 - Takeaways Just as with Abram, God has entered into covenant with us also (cf. John 3:36); through the glory of the Jesus, the only-begotten Son (who passed as a light through the darkness of our affliction between God and us). Just as with Abram, this covenant is contingent upon God s character alone All who believe have, like Abram, a sign or pledge in the gift of the Spirit, through which we may know that we shall inherit our promised heavenly reward. Though God tolerates the wicked for a time, his vengeance falls on them when the measure of their wickedness is full (e.g. Egypt, as well as the nine people groups listed).

Chapter 16 - Overview Sarai and Hagar Sarai s faith is tested, and she develops her own plan to help God; Abram complies, setting aside his own faith (v1-3) Sarai gets exactly what she desired, and gets hate as her bonus reward (v4) Sarai curses her husband with the pain of her foiled plan and accuses Hagar of the very thing of which she was guilty (v5)
Chapter 16 Overview (2) Sarai and Hagar (Pt 2) Abram passes off the responsibility for reconciliation back to Sarai, dismissing Hagar despite his own carnal indulgence (v6) God intervenes on Hagar s behalf with a promise for her (v7-12) Hagar recognizes God and her own faith is shown through her trusting response, including through the naming of the son she bears as Ishmael: God listens (v13-16)
Chapter 16 - Takeaways A key element of true faith is patience and willingness to endure past when your sense of timing Formulating your own plan for obtaining God s blessings will ALWAYS have negative consequences beyond the reward you assume (alternately, you may get exactly what you desire, with the opposite intended result). God does not need your help, he desires your obedience more than your activity, planning, or reasoning
Chapter 16 Takeaways (2) Never replace a desire to please others over your desire to please God Taking responsibility for your mistakes is much wiser than deflecting blame Even in the midst of your afflictions (self-made or otherwise) God Listens
Chapter 17 - Overview Abram becomes Abraham (v1-6) God s requirement: Covenant of Circumcision (v9-14) Sarai becomes Sarah (v15) God reiterates His promise, Abraham doubts, God elaborates (v16-22) Abraham follows God s command and circumcises all men in his household (v23-24)
Chapter 17 - Takeaways (Again) We should never be assumptive that natural circumstance inhibits God. Omnipotence ( ALL powerful ) is just that. We must avoid the idolatrous thought that just because we have not observed something, that it is therefore impossible (mankind consistently attempts to deny the supernatural on this basis) That which is manifested of the flesh can, at best, receive only temporary reward; Children of the Spirit receive the everlasting covenant
O. Monroe CBF Wednesday Refuel June 8, 2016
Chapter 18 - Overview Abraham is visited (Pt. 1) The appearance of the three (v1-2) Abraham offers to serve the visitors (v4-5) Abraham exceeds the appropriate, even more than what he promised (v6-8)
Chapter 18 Overview (2) Sodom and Gomorrah (Pt. 2) When blessed, Sarah s response is mockery then denies and lies when questioned about it (v9-15) Abraham receives revelation about Sodom and Gomorrah s fate as a testing of his righteousness (v16-21) Abraham pleas are an appeal to the Lord s justice and righteousness (v22-33)
Chapter 18 - Takeaways Always be prepared to show Godly hospitality and honor to strangers Cynicism in the face of blessing can easily result in Godly rebuke Sins have a tendency to escalate (denial after pride, doubt, or ungratefulness) God s love inclines Him to listen to our requests God is Just and desires that we trust this in Him
Chapter 19 - Overview Judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah Angels accosted by Sinfulness (v1-11) House of Lot given reprieve (v12-29) Lot debased and defiled by his daughters sin due to their lack of faith and ungodly planning (v30-35) The Moabites and Ammonites (v36-38)
Chapter 19 - Takeaways This chapter is a testimony to the unforeseen costs of sin, desire and ungodly choices: Lots desire for what was better in his sight without God s insight The judgment of a culture due to rampant sin Seeking to compound sin with sin (the offering of the daughters) The cost of looking back The faithlessness of the children raised in a tainted society Generations/nations can birthed though our iniquity
O. Monroe CBF Wednesday Refuel June 15, 2016
Chapter 20 - Overview The Repeated Faithlessness, Fear and Treachery of Abraham A lesson unlearned and a lie repeated (v1-2) Again God intervenes (v3-8) Abraham again is chastised (v9-13) Restitution for offense is given by Abimelech (v14-16) The wombs of the house of Abimelech are reopened after Abraham s prayer (v17-18)
Chapter 20 - Takeaway Though he was declared righteous and faithful on multiple occasions (including by God himself), and also received many material blessings throughout his life, Abraham's moral and logical shortcomings often required intervention by God; lest Abraham s choices lead to his destruction. This is evidence of the God who declares He never will leave nor forsake us, and should give us confidence in our salvation and life thereafter.
O. Monroe CBF Wednesday Refuel June 22, 2016
Chapter 21 - Overview The Birth of Isaac (v1-6) Hagar and Ishmael are sent away at Sarah s urging, as God reminds Abraham of his previous promise regarding Ishmael (v8-13) God again intervenes on behalf of Hagar in the midst of her sorrow (v14-19) God covers Hagar and Ishmael as he grows up, and ultimately a wife is found for him from among her people (v20-21)
Chapter 21 Overview (2) The Treaty at Beersheba Abimelech s offer of peace is agreed to by Abraham (v22-24) After resolution is found regarding disputed ownership of a well, the agreement is ratified and Abraham openly honors God (v25-33) This agreement allowed Abraham and his people to peacefully in the Philistine land (v34)
Chapter 21 - Takeaways Faith in God and resting in patient peace allows us to weather the emotional storm of waiting for the fullness of God s timing to be made manifest As with Hagar s lifesaving well, without eyes opened by God, we can easily miss blessings that are right before us Free honor and worship of God in the midst of unbelievers can have a profound affect upon our reputation in the community
Chapter 22 - Overview The Testing of Abraham God commands Isaac to be offered as a burnt offering (v1-2) After a three-day journey, Abraham, two of his men and Isaac arrive at the place God has designated (v3-4) After the two of them separate Isaac questions his father regarding the location of the lamb to be sacrificed to which Abraham simply states God will provide the lamb for the offering. Isaac questions no more (v5-8)
Chapter 22 Overview (2) The Testing of Abraham (cont.) Isaac is spared and God provides a substitution (v9-14) God reiterates the promise due to Abraham s obedience (v15-19) Abraham gets word of the birth of children and grandchildren to his siblings (v20-24)
Chapter 22 - Takeaways Obedience, often beyond our understanding as well as sight, pleases God The tests of God are not a game for sport, but designed to grow our faith and strengthen our relationship with Him The birth of Abraham s nephews and their children is a sign of God preparing blessings for Abraham far and away from Abraham s awareness or active participation God acts similarly for us
O. Monroe CBF Wednesday Refuel June 29, 2016
Chapter 23 - Overview Death and Burial of Sarah Sarah dies at age 127, 37 years after Isaac s birth (v1-2) Abraham is offered land to bury Sarah, but chooses to pay the fair price (v3-18) Sarah is buried in the land of Canaan in the purchased cave (v19-20)
Chapter 23 - Takeaways As with Abraham, Sarah made many choices in her life we would call mistakes. Nevertheless, God was able to use her mightily (often in spite of herself) Sarah is the only woman in Scripture whose age at death, and burial are mentioned. This is likely to honor her place as mother of the Hebrew people. Both these facts should keep us confident that even though we may stumble along the way God can still do great things with, in and through us
Chapter 24 - Overview Isaac and Rebekah Abraham receives a pledge from his servant regarding the nationality of Isaac s wife (v1-9) The servant journeys to find Isaac s wife praying for success before he engages anyone (v10-14) The servant s specific prayer is answered immediately Rebekah (grand-niece of Abraham) is introduced displaying hospitality and willingness to serve sacrificially (v15-20)
Chapter 24 Overview (2) Isaac and Rebekah (cont.) The servant and Rebekah marvel at the fruition of God s providence (v21-27) Laban, Rebekah s brother, hears the servant s story and with Bethuel, Rebekah s father, negotiates the betrothal (v28-54) Rebekah consents to leave, then departs with the servant (v55-61) Isaac meets and married Rebekah (v62-67)
Chapter 24 - Takeaways Even before the consideration of a wife for Isaac, God established exact what was needed Abraham s adamancy that Isaac s wife not be from among the pagan peoples was a fatherly provision as well as an honoring of God covenantal call. Our children should likewise not be left to completely choose their path without an understanding of God s call and given a legacy to embrace The call to marriage is not purely an expressing of desire or love but more so a call from God to be responded to according to HIS defined order
Chapter 25 - Overview Death of Abraham Abraham s second wife Keturah, their six children and their descendants (v1-4) Abraham s sole material heir is Issac (v5-6) Abraham s death at 175 years, and burial with Sarah in the purchased burial place (v7-11) Twelve Sons of Ishmael (v12-16) Ishmael dies at 137 years and his heirs live in conflict with their other family (v17-18)
Chapter 25 Overview (2) Jacob and Esau At 40 Isaac married Rebekah (v19-20) God answers Isaac s prayer for children and twin sons are conceived The twin s current conflict is explained, and future tribal strife is prophesied (v22-23) Jacob and Esau are born when Isaac is 60 and favorites are chosen by the parents (v24-28) The birthright of Esau is sold (29-34)
Chapter 25 - Takeaways By purchasing the place of burial many years before his death, Abraham was freeing his children from having to manage during their time of grief. Though God s fulfilled covenant did not primarily include them Abraham was intentional about providing for all his children (even Ishmael whom had previously been sent away). It is imperative that parents live not just for themselves but leave a legacy for their children though this culture s find yourself mentality conflicts
Chapter 25 Takeaways (2) It is encouraging to see that though God may not have grand plans for us, he will still see His promises to us fulfilled (hence the inclusion of the story of Ishmaels descendants) Oftentimes death, while a separation from this life, can bring together, through honoring of the dead, those who have been separated (Isaac and Ishmael)
Chapter 25 Takeaways (3) While it may be impossible to not have favorites among your children (mainly based on personality), treating them differently can have disastrous, family divisive results Getting lost in temporary desire can, by your own will, cost you your future blessing
Chapter Big Recurring Takeaways What can be learned from the life of Abraham? Obedience to God s Call Faithfulness to His Promises God s Provision in our Time of Need Honoring our Call (Worship & Thanksgiving, Mindfulness, Availability)
