2 COT Community Havurah Tuesday Jan. 23 7:00 PM Hostess: Melany Spielman Men s Club Tuesday Jan. 23 7:00 PM Host: Michael Aroner Torah School Dates: Sundays at 9:30 AM Book Club Tuesday Jan :30 AM Host(ess): Nancy Cohn Book: Nowhere in Africa by Stefanie Zweig Nowhere in Africa is the extraordinary tale of a Jewish family who flees the Nazi regime in 1938 for a remote farm in Kenya. Abandoning their once-comfortable existence in Germany, Walter Redlich, his wife Jettel, and their five-yearold daughter, Regina, each deal with the harsh realities of their new life in different ways. Attorney Walter is resigned to working the farm as a caretaker; pampered Jettel resists adjustment at every turn; while the shy yet curious Regina immediately embraces the country learning the local language and customs, and finding a friend in Owuor, the farm s cook. As the war rages on the other side of the world, the family s relationships with their strange environment become increasingly complicated as Jettel grows more self-assured and Walter more haunted by the life they left behind. In 1946, with the war over, Regina s fondest dream comes true when her brother Max is born. Walter s decision, however, to return to his homeland to help rebuild a new Germany puts his family into turmoil again. 3 Leadership Source of All Being, Creator of All Life, on this day of remembrance, help us to confront the pervasive racism in our communities and throughout our nation. Spur us to take action when we see racial injustice and inequality, and to see all people as human beings, created in the image of God, connected to one another s well-being. Guide us in honest dialogue with all our neighbors, and open our hearts in compassion to really feel and hear the pain and fear of one another. Join us together to bring about justice for all in education, economic opportunity, and within our legal system. Source of All Being, Creator of All Life, open our eyes to what unites us and, with that clear vision, guide us in working to build a world where every person s life is valued, cherished and loved. Amen A Prayer for Martin Luther King Day By Rabbi Janice Mehring COT Community Events Did you know that in California, 63%, or 46,000 people are awaiting trial or sentencing in a county jail, simply because they cannot afford to pay bail. Women make up more than 80% of family members primarily responsible for covering court-related costs. The average family amasses over $13,000 in debt due to fees and fines. Incarceration of a family member is associated with a 64% decline in household assets, magnifying poverty and the race gap in America. Come learn more about how we can help with bail bond reform. The evening features a short documentary - The Bail Trap - followed by a discussion with Barry Price and Sari Dworkin, local Bend The Arc leaders. Barry and Sari will also share information about our local Bend The Arc organization For more information, please Cricket Handler -
