19 Verses, Prayers and Poems A Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master. Grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console; To be understood, as to understand; To be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive, It is in pardoning that we are pardoned and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. D 23rd Psalm The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside the still waters. Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come; Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. When we ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, We ve no less days to sing God s praise Than when we ve first begun. 22 Verses, Prayers and Poems G In The Garden I come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses and the voice I hear falling on my ear the Son of God discloses. He speaks and the sound of His voice is so sweet the birds hush their singing, and the melody, that He gave to me within my heart is ringing. I d stay in the garden with Him tho the night around me is befalling, but He bids me go; thro the voice of woe, His voice to me is calling. (Refrain) And He walks with me and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own. And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known. H He Only Takes The Best God saw you were getting tired, and a cure was not to be; so He put His arms around you, and whispered, Come to Me With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating. hard working hands to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. 22

23 Verses, Prayers and Poems I J God s Garden God looked around His garden and saw an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth, and saw your tired face. He put His arms around you, and lifted you to rest, God s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain. He knew that you would never get well on earth again. He saw that the road was getting rough, and the hill is hard to climb. So He closed your weary eyelids, and whispered Peace Be Thine. It broke our hearts to lose you, for part of us went with you, The day God called you home. Footprints One night I dreamed a dream. As I was walking along the beach with my Lord. Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, One belonging to me and one to my Lord. After the last scene of my life flashed before me, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. I noticed that at many times along the path of my life, especially at the very lowest and saddest times, there was only one set of footprints. This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it. "Lord, you said once I decided to follow you, You'd walk with me all the way. But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life, there was only one set of footprints. I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me." He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you Never, ever, during your trials and testings. When you saw only one set of footprints, It was then that I carried you." 23

24 Verses, Prayers and Poems K L God Hath Not Promised God hath not promised skies always blue Flower strewn pathways, all our lives through; God hath not promised sun without rain, Joy without sorrow, peace without pain. But God hath promised strength for the day, Rest for the labour, light for the way, Grace for the trials, help from above, Unfailing kindness, undying love. I m Free Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free, I'm following the path God laid for me. I took his hand when I heard his call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, To laugh, to love, to work, to play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I've found that peace at the close of the day. If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My Life's been full, I savoured much, Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch, Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me free. 24

25 M Verses, Prayers and Poems Safely Home I am home in heaven, dear ones; oh, so happy and so bright! There is a perfect joy and beauty in the everlasting light. All the pain and grief is over, every restless tossing passed; I am now at peace forever, safely home in heaven at last. There is work still waiting for you, so you must not idly stand, do it now, while life remainethyou shall rest in God's own land. When that work is all completed, He will gently call you home; oh, the rapture of that meeting oh, the joy to see you come! N On Eagle s Wings And He shall raise you up On eagle s wings, Bear you on The breath of dawn, Make you to shine- Like a sun, And hold you in the palm of His hands. 25

26 Verses, Prayers and Poems Do Not Stand O Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die. O Gentlest Heart P O gentlest heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls, have mercy on the soul of thy departed servant. Be not severe in Thy judgement but let some drops of Thy Precious Blood fall upon the devouring flames, and do Thou O Merciful Saviour, send Thy Angels to conduct Thy departed servant to a place of refreshment, light and peace. Amen. 26

27 Verses, Prayers and Poems Irish Blessing Q May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand. Afterglow R I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one. I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun of happy memories that I leave when life is done. 27

28 Verses, Prayers and Poems S T Miss Me, But Let Me Go When I come to the end of the road and the sun has set on me, I want no rites in a gloom filled room, why cry for a soul set free. Miss me a little--but not too long, and not with your head bowed low, Remember the love that we once shared, miss me--but let me go. For this is a journey that we all must take, and each must go alone. It's all a part of the Master's plan, a step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick of heart, go to the friends we know. And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds, miss me--but let me go. Crossing The Bar Sunset and evening star And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. 28
