1 Contributors Carol Ascher divides her time between writing fiction and analyzing research on minority education at Teachers College, Columbia University. She is the author of Simone de Beauvoir: A Life of Freedom (1981) and co-editor of Between Women: Biographers, Novelists, Critics, Teachers and Artists Write About Women (1984). She is also the author of a novel, The Flood (1987). Steven E. Aschheim received his Ph.D. in 1980 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is Lecturer in German Cultural and Intellectual History at the Hebrew University. He is the author of Brothers and Strangers: The East EuropeanJew in German and German]ewish Consciousness, (1982). Prof. Aschheim is currently working on a study dealing with the impact of Nietzsche on German political culture. Renate Bridenthal is Professor of History at Brooklyn College, the City University of New York. She is co-editor of Becoming Visible: Women in European History (1987,znd) and of When Biology Became Destiny: Women in Weimar and Nazi Germany (1984). She is currently writing a book on German housewives' organizations between the two World Wars. Henry L. Feingold is Professor of History at Baruch College of the City College of New York. Among his many publications are The Politics of Rescue (1970) and Zionism in America (1974). Tom L. Freudenheim was educated at Harvard University and New York University where he was a student of Erwin Panofsky and Richard Ettinghausen. He has been the Director of the Baltimore and Worcester Art Museums and currently serves as the Assistant Secretary for Museums of the Smithsonian Institution. Peter Gay is Durfee Professor of History at Yale University. He is the author of numerous works on European history including Weimar Culture: The Outsider as Insider (1968), Style in History (1974), Freud,]ews and Other Germans (1978) and, most recently, Freud: A Life for Our Times (1988).

2 426 American Jewish Archives Alfred Gottschalk is the President of Hebrew Union College -Jewish Institute of Religion and Professor of Bible and Jewish Thought. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council and chairs its education committee. He has recently delivered the Thirty-Second Leo Baeck Memorial Lecture entitled "The German Pogrom of November and the Reaction of American Jewry." Atina Grossmann is Assistant Professor of History at Columbia University. She is co-editor of When Biology Became Destiny: Women in Weimar Germany (1984). Her book on population policy and sexual politics in Weimar Germany is to be published by Oxford University Press. William W. Hallo is Willam M. Laffan Professor of Assyriology and Babylonian Literature at Yale University. He also serves as Curator of the Yale Babylonian Collection. He is the author or co-author of, among other works, Early Mesopotamian Royal Titles (1957), The Ancient Near East: A History (1971) and Heritage: Civilization and the Jews (1984). Frances Henry is a Social Anthropologist at York University, Toronto, Canada. Her interest in ethnic relations and her German-Jewish background led to the writing of a book on Jewish-Gentile ethnic relations in a small town in Germany entitled Victims and Neighbors: A Small Town in Nazi Germany Remembered (1984). Anthony Heilbut is a free-lance writer and author of the highly-acclaimed study of German-Jewish refugees in America Exiled in Paradise (1983). He has also published The Gospel Sound: Good News and Bad Times (1985) and is now completing a critical biography of Thomas Mann to be published by Alfred Knopf. Uri D. Herscher is executive vice-president of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and Professor of American Jewish History. Among his publications are Jewish Agricultural Utopias in America (1981), The East European Jewish Experience in America (1983), and (with Abraham J. Peck) Queen City Refuge. An Oral History of Cincinnati's Jewish Refugees from Nazi Germany (1989).

3 Contributors 427 Wolfgang Holdheim is Professor of Comparative Literature and Romance Studies and Frederic J. Whiton Professor of Liberal Studies at Cornell University. Among his publications are Theory and Practice of the Novel: A Study on Andre' Gide (1968) and The Hermeneutic Mode: Essays on Time in Literature and Literary Theory (1984). He has also published Die Suche nach dem Epos: Der Geschichtsroman bei Hugo, Tolstoi und Flaubert. Henry R. Huttenbach is Professor of History at the City College of New York. Walter Jacob is the senior rabbi of Rodef Shalom Congregation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has authored or edited eleven volumes including Christianity through Jewish Eyes (1974), The Changing World of Reform Judaism (1958) and Contemporary American Reform Responsa (1987). Manfred Jonas is John Bigelow Professor of History at Union College. He is the author or editor of, among other publications, American Foreign Relations in the Twentieth Century (1967), Roosevelt and Churchill: Their Secret Wartime Correspondence (1975) and The United States and Germany: A Diplomatic History (1984). Hans Juergensen is Professor of Humanities at the University of South Florida at Tampa. He has served as a consultant to the Nobel Prize Committee on Literature and to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. He has published numerous volumes of poetry including Existential Canon, and Other Poems (1965), Sermons from the Ammunition Hatch of the Ship of Fools (1968), and the forthcoming Testimony: Selected Poems, Marion Kaplan is Associate Professor of History at Queens College, the City University of New York. She is the author of The Jewish

She is the editor of The Marriage Bargain: Women and Dowries in European History (1985) and coeditor of When Biology became Destiny: Women in Weimar and Nazi Germany (1984). She is currently writing a social history of Jewish women in Imperial Germany. Robert Liberles is Senior Lecturer in Jewish History at Ben Gurion University, Beersheva, Israel. He is the author of Religious Conflict in Social Context: The Resurgence of Orthodox Judaism in Frankfurt am Main, (1986) which was awarded the 1986 National Jewish Book Award in History. Steven M. Lowenstein is the Isadore Levine Professor of Jewish History at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles. He is the author of Frankfurt on the Hudson: The German Jewish Community of Washington Heights, 193s (1988). Joseph B. Maier is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Rutgers University. He is currently the president of the Rashi Association for the Preservation of Jewish Cultural Monuments in Europe. Professor Maier is the author of several volumes, among them On Hegel's Critique of Kant (1939, 1966), Politics of Change in Latin America (I 964), and Ethnicity, Identity and History (19 82). Henry Meyer is Professor of Violin at the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati and, until recently, a member of the internationally-acclaimed LaSalle Quartet. Michael A. Meyer is Professor of Jewish History at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Cincinnati. He is the author of The Origins of the Modern Jew: Jewish Identity and European Culture in Germany, (1967), which was named the best book on Jewish thought in 1967 by the Jewish Book Council of America, Ideas of Jewish History (1974) and Response to Modernity. A History of the Reform Movement in Judaism (1988). George L. Mosse is Weinstein-Bascom Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin - Madison and Koebner Professor of History at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. From 1970 to he was the National Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union. He is the author of, among other works, Crime and Punishment: A Radical Solution (1976), Defending My Enemy (1979), and Only Judgement (1982). Gert Niers is the editor-in-chief of Aufbau. He holds a Ph.D. from Rutgers University and is the author of Frauen Schreiben im Exil (1988). W. Gunther Plaut is the Senior Scholar of Holy Blossom Temple, Toronto and the former senior rabbi of the congregation. He is the author of many volumes which include The Jews in Minnesota (1959), Judaism and the Scientific Spirit (1962), Germany Today (1962), and The Rise of Reform Judaism (1963). Herbert Pierre Secher is Professor of Political Science at Memphis State University. He is the editor of Basic Concepts of Sociology (Max Weber) (1962) and has written widely on German and Central European politics. Curt C. Silberman has practiced law in the United States since He is the former president of the American Federation of Jews from Central Europe and the Jewish Philanthropic Fund of as well as a trustee of the Leo Baeck Institute. He is the author of several articles dealing with international law. Diane R. Spielmann holds a doctorate in German 1iteraturetJewish writers and is the archivist of the Leo Baeck Institute. She is the sister of Lee A. Spielmann. Lee A. Spielmann is a practicing attorney in New York who, as a law student, worked with the Department of Justice, Office of Special Investigations. His parents are survivors of the Holocaust. Hans J. Steinitz is an editor and journalist and the former editor of Aufbau, ( ). Among his publications are Regierungs-und Verfassungsformen des Auslands (1947), Mississippi, Geschichte eines Stromes, and Aufbau, Dokumente einer Cultur in Exil (1972).

6 430 American Jewish Archives Lucy Y. Steinitz holds a doctorate in social work and is the Executive Director of the Jewish Family Services of Baltimore. She is the editor (with David M. Zyoni) of Living After the Holocaust: Reflections by Children of Survivors in America (1976). She is the daughter of Hans J. Steinitz. Guy Stern is Distinguished Professor of Romance and Germanic Languages and Literatures at Wayne State University in Detroit. He is the author of, among other works, War, Weimar and Literature: The Story of the "Neue Merkur," (1971), and Alfred Neumann (1979). Herbert A. Strauss is director of the Zentrum fuer Antisemitismusforschung at the Technische Universitaet, Berlin. He is the founder of the Research Foundation for Jewish Immigration. He is the foremost interpretor of the German Jewish refugee experience in the United States and was the project director of the three-volume International Biographical Dictionary of Central European Emigres, I ( ). Werner Weinberg is Professor Emeritus of Hebrew Language and Literature at the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, Cincinnati. His most recent publication is Self-Portrait of a Holocaust Survivor (198 5). Jack Wertheimer is the Joseph and Martha Mendelsohn Associate Professor of American Jewish History at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, New York. He is the author of Unwelcome Strangers: East European Jews in Imperial Germany (1987) and editor of The American Synagogue: A Sanctuary Transformed (1988). Theodore Wiener received his rabbinic ordination from the Hebrew Union College in He is Judaica subject cataloguer at the Library of Congress and the author of numerous scholarly publications. Norbert Wollheim is a survivor of the Holocaust and was instrumental in the founding the Bergen-Belsen DP camp and of the Jewish communal organizations in postwar northern Germany. He was also instrumental in bringing legal action against the German firm of I.G. Farben for its use of slave labor during the Holocaust.
