Friend who committed adultery: It was like I was two people. There is the spiritual guy who longs to praise and worship God. But then there is this guy who did a terrible thing. This warning is for people in the fifties and sixties just as much for those of you in your teens, twenties, thirties, forties. No one ever gets too old to fall. Couldn t sleep and went to the computer and fired up the internet and opened a porn site. From the roof David saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful in appearance. The Bible never pads the record. When it says a woman is beautiful, she's a knockout. My question is why in the world didn't Bathsheba draw her shades? Why in the world did she bathe on a roof top underneath the balcony where she knew David often walked? 2

SLIDE #: 2 SAMUEL 11:5: The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, "I am pregnant." David s been around the block. He knows exactly how to handle this. SLIDE #: ACT THREE: URIAH THE VICTIM So David sends for Uriah and brings him home from battle. Plan is to get him to spend the night with Bathsheba and Uriah will think that it's his child. Tries to get Uriah drunk so he'll go home. But he refuses. Now David's final response: Murder. SLIDE #: ACT FOUR: NATHAN THE HERO (Puts everything back on track to fix this mess) Lord sent Nathan to David 2 men, one rich and one poor Rich man had hundreds of sheep Poor man had one little lamb. Ate from his table, shared his food, drank from his cup, kids played with it, slept with it like a daughter Traveler comes to home of rich man. Instead of taking a sheep from his multitudes, he took ewe lamb from poor man and cooked it and served it to his neighbor. SLIDE #: 2 SAMUEL 12:5-6: David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, "As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did this deserves to die! 6 He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity." SLIDE #: 2 SAMUEL 12:7: Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man! And David broke. SLIDE #: ACT FIVE: THE VILLAIN AND THE OTHER VICTIMS SLIDE #: Psalm 51:4: Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge. 4 Ahithophel: David s favorite counselor turned against him and betrayed him. 2 Samuel 17:1-2: Ahithophel said to Absalom, "I would choose twelve thousand men and set out tonight in pursuit of David. 2 I would attack him while he is weary and weak. I would strike him with terror, and then all the people with him will flee. Ahithophel was Bathsheba s grandfather. I have TWO LETTERS one from a daughter to her dad and the other is from the dad to his wife. Dad recently divorced his wife and left her and his two children for another woman. The daughter has recurring nightmares about it all. They are driving with mom and dad in the front seat and the kids are in the back. The day is bright and sunny and the next thing the daughter realizes that it is now dark, rainy, and cold. Dad is no longer in the car. Mom is driving. Suddenly, we all looked up and saw another car heading straight for us. Mom tried to swerve out of the way, but the other can smashed into us. The thing is, Dad, just before being hit, we could see that you were driving the other car. And sitting next to you in the front seat, was another woman. Mom was really hurt. She was thrown into the steering wheel and broke several ribs. One of them punctured her lungs and almost pierced her heart. When the car wrecked, the back door smashed into Brian, and he shattered his arm, which is now in a cast. He s still in so much pain and shock from the wreck that he doesn t want to take or play with anyone. I was stuck out in the cold for a long time with my right leg broken. As I lay there, I couldn t move and didn t know what was wrong with Mom and Brian. I was hurting so much myself that I couldn t help them. There have been times since the wreck when I wondered if any of us would make it. The doctors say I ll need a lot of therapy on my leg. But I wish it was you who was helping me, instead of them. At night when the hospital is really quiet, they push Brian and me into Mom s room, and we all talk about you. We talk about how much we loved driving with you and how we wish you were with us now. {Julie, pause here} Are you all right? Are you hurting from the wreck? Do you need us like we need you? We re still not really sure where you are or if you were hurt or if you need help. If you need me, I m here and I love you. Your daughter, Kimberly. 5 There is a huge price tag to making a marriage work. When we neglect a marriage, we re not just hurting ourselves, everyone else around us pays a terrible price. Here is the I am profoundly sorry for what I did to you. If it doesn t, don t bother to make the confession. Wait until you really are sorry. After Your Confession, Put A Period And Stop Talking. 6 We are instructed by Christ to forgive. Forgiveness does not mean forgetting. I do not know who coined the admonition forgive and forget. I do know that it is impossible to forget at will. Forgiving does not mean letting the one who hurt you off the hook. If I forgive them then they don t have to pay for what they did. Those who hurt do need to pay for what they did. The truth is that when we forgive, we do let people off of our hook, but they are still on God s hook. for vengeance or grace and forgiveness. We can choose to establish boundaries, giving the offender over a period of time opportunity to demonstrate his trustworthiness. SLIDE #: REAL REPENTANCE MEANS THAT WE ALONE ARE TO BLAME. In verses 1-4 David mentions sin and transgression 7 times. He gets it. Tiger: For all that I have done, I am so sorry. Good sermon when you get Tiger Woods, Led Zephelin and David all in the same sermon SLIDE #: REAL REPENTANCE MEANS THAT WE WANT MERCY NOT JUSTICE. 6

7 You are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge. However: According to your great compassion: Act, O Lord, like yourself. Give mercy like your mercy. SLIDE #: REAL REPENTANCE MEANS THAT WE GET NAKED BEFORE GOD Adam and Eve Naked before God and he covered them. Lot of nakedness in this morality tale: Bathsheba naked on the roof top. David naked in bed with Bathsheba. Tiger naked with women. Tiger naked before American people. I am guilty. David naked before God. Exposes it all If you cover your sin God will expose it. If you expose your sin, God will cover it. God never pulls up the covers. REAL REPENTANCE IS NOT TO BEAT US TO DEATH BUT TO RESTORE THE INTIMACY THAT WE HAD WITH GOD AND OTHERS BEFORE WE SINNED. Psalm 51:12: Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. He had lost the joy for a while. None but God can give back the joy. The joy always follows the pardon and forgiveness. SLIDE #: Psalm 78:70-72: He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens; from tending the sheep he brought him to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance. SLIDE #: And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.
