7 Note to Parents God could have stopped creating animals after giving us a few creatures for food. But our Creator didn t stop there. God made a wide variety of animals, from cute and cuddly to big and brave. And each carefully crafted critter can teach us about our Creator, about our world, and about ourselves. The Bible is filled with stories about animals, and these stories will engage your little ones while at the same time teaching them truths about God s character. In this book, each reading includes a retelling of a Bible story, a list of amazing facts about the animal, a section that helps kids apply what they ve learned, a verse, and a prayer. As you read these stories with your child, my hope is that both of you will grow in your understanding of and love for God. Have fun together on your animal adventure! Dandi Daley Mackall 1

8 God Made That! The Real Story Genesis 1 2 God has always been here. But animals and people have NOT always been here. Flowers and trees and stars and sky have not always been here. God created everything! God could have made the world in black and white. But he gave us red flowers, blue sky, green grass, and 2

9 orange sunsets God created a colourful world! God could have made goldfish... and then stopped. Instead, God created tiny goldfish, big dolphins, lobsters, crabs, catfish, and on and on. And that was just the beginning! God created birds and beavers, kangaroos and kittens, elephants and eels, giraffes and jaguars. Who made horses and hippos? Ants and anteaters? Lions and lizards? God did! And who made mummies and daddies? Brothers and sisters? And you? God did! God created you! 3

10 Amazing Animal F a c t s Can you guess the strongest insect in the world? The answer might surprise you it s the rhinoceros beetle. It can lift more than 800 times its weight. That s like you lifting about ten cars! A giraffe has seven bones in its lo-o-o-ng neck... and so do you! A cheetah can run faster than 60 mph. That s about as fast as your parents drive. Snails can go for three years without eating if they stay asleep. A starfish has no brain, no blood, no ears, and no nose. But it can live for years and years. 4

11 What It Means to Me Why do you think God made so many different kinds of animals? (Take a guess!) God must love to make things. What things do you like to make? God loves us so much that he wants us to enjoy the things he created. Do you ever walk past a red bird or a funny squirrel or a honking goose and barely notice them? Pay attention! When someone gives you a great gift, you say thank you, don t you? Thank God for fuzzy kittens, barking dogs, and even prickly porcupines. God saved the best creation for last people! People come in different shapes, sizes, and colours, too. God created YOU! Verse Let every created thing give praise to the LORD. Psalm 148:5 Talking to God God, thank you for making all the animals. Please help me pay attention to what you ve made. Amen. 5

12 Name That Pet The Real Story Genesis 2 Imagine sitting in the grass with your eyes shut. You open your eyes, and for the first time, you see a gorilla! Then a beetle. And a bear. A dog, a cat, a goat all of them walk by. There s a butterfly, an eagle, and an alligator. An animal parade passes in front of you. They make you smile. They make you laugh. Then God says, Name that pet! 6

13 That s what happened to Adam, the first man. God told Adam to name the animals. Uh... octopus! Adam shouted. Hippopotamus! Horse! God gave Adam a big job. He had to come up with a lot of names. But then Adam got an even bigger job. Take care of these animals, God told him. Adam got to be the boss. That meant he had to keep the animals safe and happy. God trusted Adam to be kind to all the animals. 7

14 Amazing Animal F a c t s Some baby animal names are pretty funny. A baby swan is called a cygnet. A baby kangaroo is a joey. A baby pigeon is a squab or a squeaker. Can you guess what kind of baby animal is called a kid? A baby goat! Some animal groups have funny names too: a leap of leopards, a pod of seals, a mischief of rats, an unkindness of ravens, a muster of peacocks, a school of fish, a knot of toads, an army of frogs, a gaggle of geese, a clutter of cats, a murder of crows. The smartest dog is said to be the Jack Russell terrier or the Scottish border collie. The dog said to be the dopiest is the Afghan hound. (But the hound is still lovable, of course!) 8 The hippopotamus has such a big mouth that if you re around 1.2 metres tall, you can easily stand up straight in there. (Don t try this at home... or at the zoo!)

15 What It Means to Me God made animals with all the right parts. He built camels so they could go without water for a long time in the desert. He made fish so they could breathe underwater. He gave eagles wings so they could fly. He made moles with sharp nails so they could dig tunnels underground. God is an awesome animal maker! But he wants people to help care for the animals. Sometimes we don t do a very good job, and that makes God sad. Do you have a pet? Make sure you give it fresh water, the right food, and plenty of love. Take care of the animals! Verse The LORD God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one. Genesis 2:19 Talking to God God, thank you for making animals! Help me to take good care of them. Amen. 9
