I feel fortunate that we can offer these programs to you and the community at large. Am Kolel has carved out a unique niche in the Jewish community meeting unmet spiritual needs and responding to social issues with a progressive voice. Your suggestions, involvement and support has been the key. Each generation, as our Torah teaches, stands at Sinai, receiving the Teachings and breathing new life into our value and justice centered heritage. When I first came to Washington, D.C., in late August of 1970, forty years ago, I found a very stiff and conservative Jewish community, lacking in creativity, alienating to women (men, too), the intermarried and gays and lesbians and the youth. Things have changed. The early Fabrangen was a launching pad for so much of this change. The country's shift in consciousness, liberation movements and progressive young Jews demanding a more open, inclusive and creative Judaism have moved us forward. We found each other and we created new institutions and alternative communities. Mainstream synagogues opened themselves up to music, inclusiveness and the arts. For me, Am Kolel is about nurturing and strengthening these movements for change in Jewish life. Where do we go now and in the coming decade? Our country and the world is threatened by three primary enemies. They are the clash and confusion over religious teachings and doctrine from major faith traditions, climate change and the dependency on oil, and economic injustices, arrogance and greed. With the increasing polarization in this country between religious communities I see Am Kolel doing more to encourage interfaith dialogue. We, all of us, need to reach out more to the Other in our communities and neighborhoods. Concerning climate and our dependency on oil, we all need to do more to encourage change in our own lives and demand that our lawmakers do their part. We will be supporting Esra: The Environmental and Social Responsibility Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. See for more information. 8 Page 8 Fall /5771 GOT STRESS? RECONNECTING WITH NATURE CAN CURE WHAT AILS YOU! SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE Do the demands of your life simply exceed your energy? Are the stresses and pressures of daily life leaving a huge deficit of your internal resources? Perhaps you need to get away from the city, and relax in the beauty of nature! In How the City Hurts Your Brain (Boston Globe, Jan, 2009), Jonah Lehrer writes, scientists have begun to examine how the city affects the brain, and the results are chastening. Just being in an urban environment, they have found, impairs our basic mental processes...it s become clear that such unnatural surroundings have important implication for our mental and physical health One of the main forces at work is a stark lack of nature, which is surprisingly beneficial for the brain. Some educators and psychologists are calling this phenomenon, Nature Deficit Disorder. Many studies confirm that even a short time in nature can mitigate the harmful effects that urbanization has on the cognitive load that leads to stress. Nature's cycles affect not only the external climate, but also our internal health and mental well-being. Being in nature restores the delicate thread that connects us to creation, and to the seasonal touchstones that nurture our bodies, our hearts and our souls. At Sanctuary, you have the opportunity to relax in a glorious place of natural beauty and serenity. All it requires is that you slow down, and breathe in the peacefulness all around you. You can: Lounge on our huge deck or in the meditation garden Walk the labyrinth or in our woods Massage away your cares with Beckie Stroll our 28 magnificent acres Breathe the clean country air, and hydrate with country well water Marvel at the starry skies at night Please join us for Open Shabbes here at Sanctuary, and for our quarterly Jewish Renewal weekends. 12 Page 12 Fall /5771 Am Kolel, A Renewal Community THE PILLARS & BRANCHES OF AM KOLEL Am Kolel is an independent Jewish community dedicated to Jewish renewal by addressing spiritual needs in a welcoming, inclusive manner and responding to issues facing society with a progressive Jewish presence. Am Kolel means "an inclusive people." We celebrate the spiritual warmth of Judaism in a form that is joyful and personal. We reflect the ideals and principles of the Jewish Renewal Movement. Am Kolel strives to fulfill these principles through four branches: Am Kolel, the Havurah: We are a community where our members find fellowship, guidance and support for all life cycle events, birth through death. We celebrate Shabbat and holidays. We also offer opportunities for learning and community service/tikkun Olam. Am Kolel, the Resource Center: As a Resource Center for our members and for the larger community, Am Kolel provides programs and guidance to individuals and institutions, both Jewish and non-jewish, in the greater Washington DC area. We house a library of over 2,000 volumes and some 50 educational DVDs & videos. Members and those taking classes from us are welcome to borrow these resources. Am Kolel, the Renewal Center: As a Renewal Center, we are devoted to the revitalization of Judaism and the Jewish community. We offer opportunities for individuals to rediscover and discover a Judaism that is spiritually and socially meaningful; a Judaism that speaks to the heart and also to the issues we face in our daily lives; a Judaism that is compassionate towards others and towards this earth. At the core of our philosophy of Jewish renewal is our commitment to Torah (learning, growing in wisdom), Avodah (service to God), and Gimilut Chasadim (acts of loving kidness) and Tikkun Olam (repairing the world). Am Kolel, the Retreat Center: Am Kolel Sanctuary is a spiritual retreat center in Western Montgomery County, Maryland. It is a place of natural beauty and serenity where individuals and groups can experience rest, relaxation and renewal. As an ecumenical retreat center, Sanctuary is used by groups and organizations from many faiths and service orientations, as well as by Am Kolel for monthly Shabbat services, Jewish Renewal weekends and other special holiday celebrations. Sanctuary is also a perfect venue for life cycle celebrations and family gatherings. Am Kolel programs build upon our three pillars: Torah, Avodah and G milut Chasadim/Tikkun Olam.
