2 Kings 3 A Study of Leadership under King Joram of Israel
Kings and Prophets Timeline United Kingdom 1095 BC Saul David Northern Kingdom: Israel Solomon (40) (40) (40) Man of God Ahijah Jeroboam I 975 BC (22) Nadab Baasha Elah Zimri Omri Elijah Ahab (22) Ahaziah ~889 BC Elisha Joram Jehu (12) (28) Jehoahaz Jehoash ~816 BC Amos Hosea Jeroboam II (41) Zechariah Shallum Menahem Pekahiah Pekah Hoshea Fall of Israel to Assyria 722 BC (17) (16) Southern Kingdom: Judah Rehoboam Shemaiah Abijah Asa Jehoshaphat Jehoram Ahaziah Athahiah Joash Amaziah Uzziah Jotham Isaiah Ahaz Micah Legend: Prophets Kings (approx. reign in years)
King Ahaziah of Israel
King Joram of Israel
the Prophet Elisha Called by God to succeed Elijah (1 Ki. 19) Double-portion of Elijah s spirit Known for being God s instrument in: Providing the widow s endless flow of oil (2 Ki. 4) Restoring the Shunamite s son to life (2 Ki. 4) Healing Naaman (of Aram) of leprosy (2 Ki. 5) Praying his servant see God s invisible armies (2 Ki. 6)
2 Kings 3:1-8 1 Joram son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned twelve years. 2 He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, but not as his father and mother had done. He got rid of the sacred stone of Baal that his father had made. 3 Nevertheless he clung to the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn away from them.
2 Kings 3:1-8 4 Now Mesha king of Moab raised sheep, and he had to pay the king of Israel a tribute of a hundred thousand lambs and the wool of a hundred thousand rams. 5 But after Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel. 6 So at that time King Joram set out from Samaria and mobilized all Israel. 7 He also sent this message to Jehoshaphat king of Judah: The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to fight against Moab? I will go with you, he replied. I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses. 8 By what route shall we attack? he asked. Through the Desert of Edom, he answered.
King Jehoshaphat of Judah
Neighbor: Edom Origin: descendants of Esau, Jacob s brother Land: God gave Seir Do not contend with them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession.(deut. 2:4-6) Capital- Bozrah = rock, Prominent city- Petra
Neighbor: Edom Relationship: Denied Israel passage on the way to the promised land (Num. 11:14-17) Conquest of King David (2 Sam. 8:13-14) Edom later rebels against King Jehoram of Judah, fully separates during reign of Ahaz Allies with Babylon in events leading to Judah s downfall in 586 BC (Jer. 27:3) God promises total destruction (Obadiah)
Neighbor: Moab Origin: Descendants of incestuous relationship between Abraham s nephew, Lot and Lot s eldest daughter (Gen. 19:36-38) Land: God gave Moab (Deut. 2:9) Messianic Line: King David s great-grandmother was a Moabitess (Ruth) Religion: worship of Chemosh detestable practices
Neighbor: Moab Relationship: King of Moab tries to curse Israel through Balaam (Num ) No Ammonite or Moabite or any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the Lord, not even in the tenth generation. 4 For they did not come to meet you with bread and water on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam to pronounce a curse on you. (Deut. 23:3-4)
Neighbor: Moab Relationship: ctd. Moab entices Israel to sin in idolatry, resulting in God directing Israel to treat Moab as enemies The Lord said to Moses, Treat the Midianites as enemies and kill them, because they treated you as enemies when they deceived you (Num. 25:17-18a) David conquered Moab (2 Sam. 8:2) Known vassal of King Omri
Mesha Stele or the Moabite Stone Discovered intact by Frederick Augustus Klein, an Anglican missionary, at the site of ancient Dibon in August 1868 most extensive inscription ever recovered that refers to the kingdom of Israel (the "House of Omri earliest certain extra-biblical reference to the Israelite God Yahweh earliest mention of the "House of David (kingdom of Judah) one of only four known ancient inscriptions interpreted to mention the term "Israel provides invaluable information on the Moabite language and the political relationship between Moab and Israel at one moment in the 9th century BCE
2 Kings 3:9-13 Learning about ourselves What s going on here? Whom did Joram make an alliance with? Whom did Joram hold responsible for no water? How did Jehoshaphat respond differently? Application: When have you blamed God for a problem? How do you respond to difficulties? To whom do you go for help?
2 Kings 3:14-27 Learning about God What s going on here? Why was Elijah willing to talk with them? What did the Lord promise? What is the significance of the water flowing from Edom? What was the purpose of the miracle of the water? Who won the battle and why?
What We Learned About God
2 Kings 3 Learning about leadership What do you think of Joram s choice of alliance? What component of good leadership was missing in v9? How did Jehoshaphat display good leadership in response to the crisis?
What difference does this make in my life? What are you under-taking right now? How have you carefully prepared, gone as far as you can? Have you hit a wall or gotten stalled by a problem? About that undertaking What godly relationships should you cultivate? How will you seek God s help when facing a problem?
Truths About God God listens to His people and helps His people. God brings blessings from unexpected places to glorify Himself. Miracles are easy for God. The purpose of a miracle is to point to a greater truth: that God, not might or perfect planning, gives victory and success. God is merciful even when we blame Him for problems of our own making.
Leadership Lessons Good leadership makes godly alliances. Good leadership goes as far as possible and takes responsibility, but seeks God s help when needed. Good leadership looks to God in expectant faith. Good leadership knows success comes from God.
