Its archeological discoveries have shed light on the distant past of this desert region. One of its many claims to fame is the fact that an ancient spice route passed through its boundaries. In 2005, UNESCO recognized and proclaimed the ancient incense route, which passed through what is now Biblical Tamar Park, to be of outstanding universal value, and thus a "world heritage." The ancient incense route once connected Yemen, in Arabia to the Mediterranean port of Gaza. In this video, Avi Shoket, former Ambassador of Israel to UNESCO, tells of his involvement in gaining recognition of this ancient incense route. As another note of interest, a good friend of United Israel, Cynthia Hillson is presently volunteering at Biblical Tamar Park. Cynthia has studied the plants and flora of this region extensively and she has also written books about this subject.

New Moon of 8th Month On October 10th as the sun was setting in Biblical Tamar Park, Mikeal Chen and I walked out a short distance into the wilderness to search for the new moon of the 8th month.

4 New Moon of 8th Month On October 10th as the sun was setting in Biblical Tamar Park, Mikeal Chen and I walked out a short distance into the wilderness to search for the new moon of the 8th month. At 6:28 p.m. we saw the faint sliver of the thin crescent moon in the western sky. We submitted our sighting to Devorah's Date Tree along with others around the country who were also searching for the new moon. It was exciting to learn later, when she sent out the final report that we were the first to spot the new moon in the land of Israel! Those who are interested can follow Devorah's Date Tree on Facebook to receive notification of new moon sightings and much more. Here is the link to the United Israel Prayer for the new month. Day Trip to Mount Hor This week Biblical Tamar Park volunteers went on a day trip to one of the proposed sites for biblical Mount Hor as well as Ma'ale Akkrabim (Scorpion's Ascent). Ma'ale Akkrabim, mentioned three times in the Bible (Numbers 34:4, Joshua 15:3, and Judges 1:36), is only a few kilometers from Biblical Tamar Park. The location of this proposed site for Mount Hor is only a short distance farther into the wilderness of Zin along a dirt and gravel road which brings one to the base of the mountain. Tradition places Mount Hor in modern Jordan, east of here, but that location is generally understood to be within the borders of Ancient Edom, which would disqualify such identity since according to the Bible, the King of Edom refused passage of the children of Israel through his land (Numbers 20:18). Its 4,800 foot elevation also creates a problem since according to the narrative, the assembled people below are said to witness the goings on atop the mount (Numbers 20:27). We traveled into the wilderness, where we compared maps of the ancient world to the rugged terrain before us, reading descriptions from the biblical texts about the famous mountain. It was a fun adventure and a learning exercise for all involved. As a side note, the Editor is currently studying the locations mentioned in the Torah for the route taken by Israel during the wilderness wanderings. In a coming edition of the Bulletin we will write more about some of the locations mentioned in the biblical texts and their possible identifications with this area of the Aravah. Faith at the UI Center South This past Sabbath, UIWU Board Member and Minister David Tyler, traveled to Saint Francisville to lead the weekend activities.

Jack and Jodell Ontstott came in for the weekend, as did UI Minister Ronnie Fulcher. On Friday evening David presented a topic called, On the Profundity of Faith.

Local members had time to fellowship together while he was there and the locals were joined by others during times of teaching and discussion. 9 Olives Harvested at Biblical Tamar This past week, volunteers at Biblical Tamar Park harvested the olives from our trees. The olives were then slit and placed in water for soaking. The water will be changed multiple times per day over the next several days to pull out any bitterness, after which they will be finally prepared for future visitors to taste a bit of the produce of this holy land that we have been entrusted to care for.

10 A Visit to Judea I was invited to take a trip to the Rolling Hills of Judea, in the Biblical heartland to visit with friends Ari Abramowitz and Jeremy Gimpel at their new headquarters in the community of Ibei HaNahal, Gush Etzion. Larry Borntrager and I met in the town of Efrat with Ari and friend of UIWU, Ilan Pomerantz. We then made our way to the property of the new headquarters of The Land of Israel Network. Readers of the Bulletin may be familiar with the work of Ari and Jeremy. They have a vision to connect the Jewish people as well as lovers of Israel from all nations, to the land of Israel by establishing this place as a center for their activities. We were taken on a tour of the property where much work is going on. Guest houses and a beautiful place of prayer are presently being built. Additionally, they have planted hundreds of olive trees and fig trees. We toured the length and breadth of this beautiful property at times in a vehicle and at times on foot. We sat in a cave with our hosts as Jeremy described various stories, placing some of our favorite biblical and historical figures in this very region. We wish our friends great success in this new and exciting venture and will look for ways to work together in the future. I left with a desire to bring tour groups to this beautiful place. Summary Discusses the Dead Sea scrolls, a combination of the oldest written version of the Bible and the rules of the Essene community. Talks about the discovery of the scrolls and about their restoration, and examines evidence that Qumran was the site of the Essene community. Author s Review & Grade: This is about the best I ve seen on this subject. Truth sometimes has a hard time coming to the surface in archeology when some groups of people try to manipulate findings to satisfy their theology. Persistence, honesty and being unbiased in archeology or anything else are the hallmark finding truth. This

This depiction of what takes place after the scrolls were found is a little bit of an eye opener for those not involved in this field of science. On a 1 to 5 scale, I give this documentary a 4 because of the factual and candid approach to this subject. It is for everyone. I think this presentation would help explain or at least bring to light some of the political issues involved in archeology.
