12 The Centurion 1. He is a gentile centurion.

13 Luke 7:2 2 A centurion's servant, who was highly valued by him, was sick and about to die.

14 The centurion, or centurio in Latin, has become the most famous officer in the Roman army, and his experience and valour were indeed a crucial factor in maintaining order on the battlefield and ensuring Rome's military successes

15 spanned over centuries. Commanding a unit of around 100 legionaries, he was also responsible for assigning duties, dishing out punishments, and performing various administrative duties, which ranged from distributing camp passwords to the escort

16 of prisoners. Centurions could also rise to higher administrative positions within the empire, but the name centurion would forever be associated with the grizzled veteran who, emblazoned with decorations, led by courageous example on the battlefield. Ancient History Encyclopedia

17 Luke 9: When the days were coming to a close for him to be taken up, he determined to journey to Jerusalem.

18 Luke 9: He sent messengers ahead of himself, and on the way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make preparations for him.

19 Luke 9: But they did not welcome him, because he determined to journey to Jerusalem.

20 Luke 9: When the disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?"

33 Luke 6: But I say to you who listen: Love your enemies, do what is good to those who hate you,

45 Matthew 28: and told them, "Say this, 'His disciples came during the night and stole him while we were sleeping.'

46 Matthew 28: If this reaches the governor's ears, we will deal with him and keep you out of trouble."

47 Luke 7:4-5 4 When they reached Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy for you to grant this,

48 Luke 7:4-5 5 because he loves our nation and has built us a synagogue."

49 The Centurion 4. He was poor in spirit.

50 Luke 7:6-7 6 Jesus went with them, and when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to tell him, "Lord, don't trouble yourself, since I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.

51 Luke 7:6-7 7 That is why I didn't even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.

52 Luke 6: Then looking up at his disciples, he said: Blessed are you who are poor, because the kingdom of God is yours.

53 Luke 6: Blessed are you who are now hungry, because you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, because you will laugh.

54 Luke 18: He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and looked down on everyone else:

55 Luke 18: "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.

56 Luke 18: The Pharisee was standing and praying like this about himself: 'God, I thank you that I'm not like other people-greedy, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.

57 Luke 18: I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of everything I get.'

58 Luke 18: "But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even raise his eyes to heaven but kept striking his chest and saying, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner!'

59 Luke 18: I tell you, this one went down to his house justified rather than the other; because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

60 The Centurion 4. He was poor in spirit 5. He recognizes who Jesus is

61 Luke 7: Jesus went with them, and when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to tell him, "Lord, don't trouble yourself, since I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.

62 Luke 7: That is why I didn't even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.

63 Luke 7: For I too am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under my command. I say to this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

64 Luke 7: Jesus heard this and was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, "I tell you, I have not found so great a faith even in Israel."

65 Luke 7: When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant in good health.
