Do we really understand who He is? What did Moses do in Numbers 20?

2 Page 2 Numbers 20:8 11 Take the rod; and you and your brother Aaron assemble the congregation and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it may yield its water. You shall thus bring forth water for them out of the rock and let the congregation and their beasts drink. So Moses took the rod from before the LORD, just as He had commanded him; and Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly before the rock. And he said to them, Listen now, you rebels; shall we bring forth water for you out of this rock? Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation and their beasts drank. What Did Moses Do Wrong? He He used the name of God Psalm 139:19 22 that You would slay the wicked, o God; depart from me, therefore, men of bloodshed. For they speak against You wickedly, and Your enemies take Your name in vain. Do I not hate those who hate You, O LORD? And do I not loathe those who rise up against You? I hate them with the utmost hatred; they have become my enemies. Matthew 15:7 9 You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you: THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN. The Hebrew word for vain can also mean Moses took God s name and meant it mean How do I handle God s name? If people know I am a believer, how am I doing representing the name? The Jews took this command seriously. They did not even speak God s name Yahweh to avoid abusing it. Instead they substituted the phrase the Name for Yahweh in conversation. They also spoke of heaven, the place where God resides, rather than God. According to Jewish tradition when a Jewish scribe wrote the name of God he would first bathe, change his clothes, and use a new quill with which to continue writing. Number Four This command is stated in the as well as the next one We are reminded that we need to take time to recharge the batteries physically and spiritually In Exodus 20 the nation is reminded to remember the Sabbath in celebration of creation Here they do so as a of what God did for the nation For a people freshly delivered from Egyptian overlordship by the mighty exodus miracle, God as Creator is a central truth. Therefore it is most appropriate that the Sabbath focus on him as Creator and the cessation of that creative work, the very point of the Exodus commandment. From the perspective of the Deuteronomy legislation, some forty years later, creation pales into insignificance in comparison to the act of redemption itself. For us today, the central aspect of redemption for us is not the creation or the saving of the nation from Egypt, but it is what Jesus Christ did on the cross in redeeming us and then demonstrating His triumph by rising from the dead We as believers are by God to follow the Sabbath Romans 14:5 8 One person regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it for the Lord, and he who eats, does so for the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who eats not, for the Lord he does not eat, and gives thanks to God. For not one of us lives for himself, and not one dies for himself; for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord s. Colossians 2:16 17 Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.

4 Page 4 The very interesting thing is that all of the commandments are repeated in the New Testament with the exception of the commandment about the Sabbath Day. Why? So What Does This Mean to Me? The Sabbath applicable for today As New Testament believers it can literally be of the week. (Romans 14:5) It means a day of rest How do you rest? Number Five Another positive command Who Said This? Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers. Matthew 15:4 6 For God said, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER, and, HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH. But you say, Whoever says to his father or mother, Whatever I have that would help you has been given to God, he is not to honor his father or his mother. And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition. Micah 7:6 For son treats father contemptuously, Daughter rises up against her mother, Daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; A man s enemies are the men of his own household. Proverbs 1:8 Hear, my son, your father s instruction and do not forsake your mother s teaching; 2 Timothy 3:1 5 But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.

5 Page 5 Our present day society supports and even idolizes disrespect of parents. Hollywood makes serious money off disrespectful children A common theme in our entertainments is doltish parents, wise children Ephesians 6:2 4 HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the first commandment with a promise), SO THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU, AND THAT YOU MAY LIVE LONG ON THE EARTH. Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Number Six Jesus Commentary Matthew 5:21 22 You have heard that our ancestors were told, You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment. But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell. (NLT) Matthew 5:27 28 You have heard that it was said, YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY ; but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Proverbs 6:30 31 Men do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry; but when he is found, he must repay sevenfold; he must give all the substance of his house. Numbers 5:6 7 Speak to the sons of Israel, When a man or woman commits any of the sins of mankind, acting unfaithfully against the LORD, and that person is guilty, then he shall confess his sins which he has committed, and he shall make restitution in full for his wrong and add to it one-fifth of it, and give it to him whom he has wronged. So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man. How can I tell when someone is coveting?
