The Junior Quarterly - May Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, 2 Chronicles, Psalms Luke, John, 2 Corinthians, Hebrews, Revelation WORSHIP

The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil; For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost. Born of the Virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate; Was crucified, dead, and buried: The third day He rose from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The Holy catholic Church; the Communion of Saints; the Forgiveness of sins; the Resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

DJF TEACHER BIFOLDS UNIT I: GOD COM MANDS OUR LOVE, RESPECT AND OBEDIENCE Learn It! Loving God is connected to everyday living. This unit highlights total love and devo on to God as the key for naviga ng all life s circumstances. The Bible lessons come from the books of Deuteronomy, Joshua, Psalms, Ma hew and Luke. Here are key notes we learn from lesson scriptures. God expects obedience. The greatest commandments are to love God and to love one s neighbor. Human beings were made in the image of God. Joshua chose to serve God rather than idols and challenged the Israelites to make the same choice. We can s ll iden fy God s blessings in difficult mes. Mary was a part of God s plan to save the world from sin. Our love for Jesus is shown by the way we treat others. Teach It! Each ac vity in Unit I is designed to help children understand why God deserves our love and obedience. Below is a preview of the ac vi es for each lesson. JUNIORS Lesson Date/Title Get Excited! UNIT II: LOVING GOD BY TRUSTING CHRIST Learn It! Persistently following Jesus can counteract destruc ve forces that adversely affect rela onships. This unit focuses on how humankind can minimize conflicts and disputes learning how to be Christlike. The Bible lessons for this unit come from the books of Philippians, 2 Thessalonians, James and 2 John. Here are key notes we learn from lesson scriptures. Disobedience does not reflect love for God. Sinful desires cause bad choices to be made. Being in prison did not keep Paul from fulfilling his mission. Being Christlike means to put others first.

Lesson 1 December 2, 2018 Deuteronomy 6;1-9; Ma hew 22:37-40 UNIT I: GOD COMMANDS OUR LOVE AND OBEDIENCE BEING LOVED AND DEVOTED The Great Commandment 6 Now this is the commandment the statutes and the ordinances that the Lord your God charged me to teach you to observe in the land that you are about to cross into and occupy, 2 so that you and your children and your children s children may fear the Lord your God all the days of your life, and keep all his decrees and his commandments that I am commanding you, so that your days may be long. 3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe them diligently, so that it may go well with you, and so that you may mul ply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has promised you. 4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. ⁷ Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. *** 37 He said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the greatest and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. our God, for our las ng good, so as to keep us alive, as is now the case. 5-JR-DJF

read and learn! (10 minutes) ZION Do you know what a phylactery is? ZAYA No, Zion, I have never heard that word before. ZION A phylactery is a small black leather cube-shaped case containing Torah texts wri en on parchment. Zaya Why did people carry this case? Zion To remind them of specific verses from God s Word. Moses taught the Israelites God s greatest commandment. God instructed Moses to teach the commandment so that the people would fear God. Fearing God means respec ng God, standing in awe and wonder of God, holding God in highest reverence. Promises were made to those who would keep God s commandments. God promised a long and frui ul life. ZAYA I guess this is why the phylactery was so important. God s Word/commandments could be carried all the me. ZION Jesus was asked, What is the greatest commandment? He repeated the words of Deuteronomy 6:5, You shall love the Lord with all your heart, and all your soul, and with all your might. The Israelites referred to this verse and the others that surround it as the ZION AND ZAYA TALK ABOUT LOVE AND DEVOTION. Shema, their confession of faith. The en re Shema is found in Deuteronomy 6:4-9. God gave instruc ons about the words of the Shema. But this commandment was not just for the Israelites then; it is for us today. Just as Moses told the Israelites to teach the commandments to their children, we must be taught these words and obey them. God even gave the teaching techniques to parents and teachers to help us learn the commandments. God s techniques are simple: Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates (6:7-9). ZAYA In other words, God s commandments are to be quoted, explained, discussed, symbolized and wri en down. We can write them on a slip of paper and carry them in our wallet/purse. But most of all, they can be wri en in our hearts. It is essen al that God s Word be a part of our everyday ac vi es, not just a few hours on Sunday. God wants us to organize our life around God and love God with all our heart. Loving God with all you have will keep your life on the right path. 7-JR-DJF

Lesson 2 December 9, 2018 Joshua 24:1-3, 13-15, CHOOSING TO LOVE The Tribes Renew the Covenant 24 Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel; and they presented themselves before God. And Joshua said to all the people, Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Long ago your ancestors Terah and his sons Abraham and Nahor lived beyond the Euphrates and served other gods. Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River and led him through all the land of Canaan and made his offspring many. I gave him Isaac; 13 I gave you a land on which you had not labored, and towns that you had not built, and you live in them; you eat the fruit of vineyards and oliveyards that you did not plant. 14 Now therefore revere the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 Now if you are unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. 21 And the people said to Joshua, No, we will serve the Lord! 22 Then Joshua said to the people, You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the Lord, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses. 23 He said, Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel. 24 The people said to Joshua, The Lord our God we will serve, and him we will obey. 9-JR-DJF

read and learn! (10 minutes) ZION AND ZAYA TALK ABOUT CHOOSING TO LOVE AND SERVE GOD. ZAYA In our lesson today, Joshua emphasized the choices the Israelites would make. Life is full of choices. Joshua told the people that the most important choice they could make was to serve God. ZION The Israelites were no different than you and me. They needed to be reminded of their covenant with God. God had kept the promise and brought God s people to the Promised Land. Under the leadership of Joshua, Moses successor, the people entered and claimed the land God had promised Abraham that his descendants would possess. Now Joshua had grown old and gave a farewell message to the Israelite leaders. Then he spoke to the Israelites and reviewed their history. Joshua reminded them how God was involved in the life of Abraham, the escape from bondage in Egypt, the ba les with the people east of the Jordan River on their way to the Promised Land and their conquest of the Promised Land. Joshua reminded the Israelites of God s role in their history. ZAYA Joshua also encouraged the Israelites to renew their covenant with God. Joshua called them to revere the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and in faithfulness (24:14). Some of the Israelites had turned their backs on God and were worshiping foreign gods. Joshua challenged the Israelites to make a decision about their future and their families: Choose this day whom you will serve. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord (24:15). The people answered, Far be it from us to forsake the Lord to serve other gods! (24:16). They remembered what God had done for them. So, they emphasized their commitment: We also will serve the Lord, for He is our God (24:18b). The Israelites renewed their covenant with God. To commemorate the event, Joshua wrote these words in the Book of Law of God; and he took a large stone, and set it up there under the oak in the sanctuary of the Lord (24:26). 11-JR-DJF

rise up! (30 minutes) It s me to work with Zion and Zaya on this week s SUPERHERO CHALLENGE: MAP QUEST. Help Zion and Zaya fill in the map to show the places referred to in the Scripture passage. What do you think? Discuss the hymn, I Have Decided to Make Jesus My Choice. Share why you choose to serve God. Time to create Make a Joshua 24 centerpiece. Time to pray Lord, thank You for showing Your love to us by taking care of us and being faithful. Help us to make good choices and decisions that show our love towards You, even when it is hard. 15 The Ten Commandments 1. You shall have no other gods before me. 2. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth gener ation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to the thou sands of those who love me and keep my commandments. 3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. 4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your man servant, or your maidservant, or your cattle, or the sojourner who is within your gates, for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the sev enth day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. 5. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you. 6. You shall not kill. 7. You shall not commit adultery. 8. You shall not steal. 9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 10. You shall not covet your neighbor s house, you shall not covet your neighbor s wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor s. *********************************************************** Published quarterly for $2.50 per copy by The A.
