2 up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. 43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. 46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man. Section :16 23, The advent of Jesus of Nazareth marked the first century of the Christian era, but the Christ is 18 without beginning of years or end of days. Throughout all generations both before and after the Christian era, the Christ, as the spirit- 21 ual idea, the reflection of God, has come with some measure of power and grace to all prepared to receive Christ, Truth. The divine Principle and idea The divine image, idea, or Christ was, is, and 27 ever will be inseparable from the divine Principle, God :14 The prophets of old looked for something higher than 15 the systems of their times; hence their foresight of the new dispensation of Truth. But Prophetic ignorance they knew not what would be the precise nature of the 18 teaching and demonstration of God, divine Mind, in His more infinite meanings, the demonstration which was to destroy sin, sickness, and death, establish the definition 21 of omnipotence, and maintain the Science of Spirit :16 From the infinite One in comes one Principle and its infinite idea, and with this infinitude 18 come spiritual rules, laws, and their demonstration, which, like the great Giver, are the Unchanging Principle same yesterday, and to-day, and forever; for thus are 21 the divine Principle of healing and the Christ-idea characterized in the epistle to the Hebrews. 4 26:10, The Christ was the Spirit which Jesus implied in his own statements: I am the way, the truth, and the life; 12 I and my Father are one. This Christ, or divinity of the man Jesus, was his divine Christ s demonstration nature, the godliness which animated him. Divine Truth, 15 Life, and Love gave Jesus authority over sin, sickness, and death. His mission was to reveal the Science of celestial being, to prove what God is and what He does 18 for man. Our Master taught no mere theory, doctrine, or belief. It was the divine Principle of all real being which he 30 taught and practised. 3 5 372:17 18 Chris- 18 tian Science and Christianity are one :32 2 Willingness to become as a little child and 1 to leave the old for the new, renders thought receptive of the advanced idea. 5 Jeremiah 31:31, 33 this Section 2 31 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 33 this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. 6 Matthew 4:23, And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. 24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them. 7 Matthew 5:1, 2, 17, 18 1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: 2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, 17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled :24 29 Section 2 24 Our Master healed the sick, practised Christian healing, and taught the generalities of its divine Principle to his students; but he left no definite rule for A definite rule discovered 27 demonstrating this Principle of healing and preventing disease. This rule remained to be discovered in : In the year 1866, I discovered the Christ Science or divine laws of Life, Truth, and Love, and 3 named my discovery. God had been graciously preparing me during many years for the reception of this final revelation of the ab- 6 solute divine Principle of scientific mental healing. 4 This apodictical Principle points to the revelation of Immanuel, God with us, the sovereign ever-pres- 9 ence, delivering the children of men from every ill that flesh is heir to :19 3 Mission of Christian Science When apparently near the confines of mortal existence, standing already within the shadow of the death-valley, 21 I learned these truths in divine Science: that Light shining in darkness all real being is in God, the divine Mind, and that Life, Truth, and Love are all-powerful and ever- 24 present; that the opposite of Truth, called error, sin, sickness, disease, death, is the false testimony of false material sense, of mind in matter; that this false sense 27 evolves, in belief, a subjective state of mortal mind which this same so-called mind names matter, thereby shutting out the true sense of Spirit. 30 My discovery, that erring, mortal, misnamed New lines of thought mind produces all the organism and action of the mortal body, set my thoughts to work in new channels, 1 and led up to my demonstration of the proposition that Mind is All and matter is naught as the leading factor in 3 Mind-science :11 For three years after my discovery, I sought the solu- 12 tion of this problem of Mind-healing, searched the Scriptures and read little else, kept aloof from so- Solitary research ciety, and devoted time and energies to dis- 15 covering a positive rule. The search was sweet, calm, and buoyant with hope, not selfish nor depressing. I knew the Principle of all harmonious Mind-action to be God, 18 and that cures were produced in primitive Christian healing by holy, uplifting faith; but I must know the Science of this healing, and I won my way to absolute 21 conclusions through divine revelation, reason, and demonstration. The revelation of Truth in the understanding came to me gradually and apparently through divine 24 power. When a new spiritual idea is borne to earth, the prophetic Scripture of Isaiah is renewedly fulfilled: Unto us a child is born,... and his name shall be 27 called Wonderful. 8 Lamentations 3:22, 23 Section 3 22 It is of the Lord s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. 9 Acts 10:38 God 38 God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. 10 II Corinthians 5:17 if 17 if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new The Publishing Society. 5 11 110:25 26 Section 3 Jesus demonstrated the power of to heal mortal minds and bodies : We walk in the footsteps of Truth and Love by following the example of our Master in the understanding of divine metaphysics. Christianity is the basis of true heal- 30 ing. Whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power. I was called to visit Mr. Clark in Lynn, who had been 1 confined to his bed six months with hip-disease, caused by a fall upon a wooden spike when quite a boy. On enter- 3 ing the house I met his physician, who said that the patient was dying :9 14 I went (to 2 nd.), Mind cures hip-disease 9 I went to his bedside. In a few moments his face changed; its death-pallor gave place to a natural hue. The eyelids 12 closed gently and the breathing became natural; he was asleep. In about ten minutes he opened his eyes and said: I feel like a new man. My suffering is all gone. I told him to rise, dress himself, and take supper with 18 his family. He did so. The next day I saw him in the yard. Since then I have not seen him, but am informed that he went to work in two weeks :4 brings to the body the sunlight of Truth, which invigorates and purifies. 6 acts as an alterative, neutralizing error with Truth. It changes the secretions, expels humors, dissolves tumors, relaxes rigid muscles, restores 9 carious bones to soundness. The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind :22 Truth an alterative God, Life, Truth, and Love make man undying. Immortal Mind, 24 governing all, must be acknowledged as supreme in the physical realm, so-called, as well as in the spiritual :15 15 Hold perpetually this thought, that it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, 18 based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, and encompassing all true being :11 13 Man is spiritual and perfect; and be- 12 cause he is spiritual and perfect, he must be so understood in The Publishing Society. 6 11 Isaiah 29:11 14, 18, 19, 24 Section 4 11 And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed: 12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned. 13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: 14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid. 18 And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness. 19 The meek also shall increase their joy in the Lord, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. 24 They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine. 12 Habakkuk 2:1 3 1 I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved. 2 And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. 3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. 13 Luke 8:40 40 And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him. 14 Luke 5:36 (to 1 st ;), 37 no, And he spake also a parable unto them; 37 no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish. 38 But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved :17 (only, to 2 nd.) :27 Section 4 Wine. Inspiration; understanding. 27 Divine Science does not put new wine into old bottles, Soul into matter, nor the infinite into the finite. Our false views of matter perish as we grasp 30 the facts of Spirit. The old belief must be cast out or the new idea will be spilled, and the inspiration, which is to change our standpoint, will be 1 lost. Now, as of old, Truth casts out evils and heals the sick. 7 20 147:14 20 Although this volume contains the complete Science of 15 Mind-healing, never believe that you can absorb the whole meaning of the Science by a simple perusal of this book. The book needs to be studied, 18 and the demonstration of the rules of scientific healing will plant you firmly on the spiritual groundwork of :25 31 Question. How can I progress most rapidly in the understanding of? 27 Answer. Study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit. Adhere to the divine Principle of Christian Science and follow the behests of God, 30 abiding steadfastly in wisdom, Truth, and Love :1 1 Some individuals assimilate truth more readily than others, but any 3 student, who adheres to the divine rules of and imbibes the spirit of Christ, can demonstrate, cast out 6 error, heal the sick, and add continually to his store of spiritual understanding, potency, enlightenment, and success. Perusal and practice Rudiments and growth Rapidity of assimilation 23 xii:23 27 In the spirit of Christ s charity, as one who hopeth 24 all things, endureth all things, and is joyful to bear consolation to the sorrowing and healing to the sick, she commits these pages to honest seekers for Truth. 15 John 13:31 Jesus, 34 Section 5 Mary Baker Eddy 31 Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 16 John 14:15 18, 25, If ye love me, keep my commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. 25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. 26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you The Publishing Society. 8 17 Deuteronomy 15:6 the (to :) 6 the Lord thy God blesseth thee, as he promised thee: :9 11 Christ, 19 Section 5 9 Christ is the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness. 21 and is doing for mankind. The promises will be fulfilled. The time for the reappearing of the divine healing is throughout all time; and whosoever layeth his earthly 24 all on the altar of divine Science, drinketh of Christ s cup now, and is endued with the spirit and power of Christian healing. 27 In the words of St. John: He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever. This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science. Jesus demonstrated Christ; he proved that Christ is the divine idea of God the Holy Ghost, 21 or Comforter, revealing the divine Principle, Love, and leading into all truth :14 Holy Ghost or Comforter Each suc- 15 cessive stage of experience unfolds new views of divine goodness and love : Truth s immortal idea is sweeping down the centuries, gathering beneath its wings the sick and sinning. My weary hope tries to realize that happy day, when man shall 18 recognize the Science of Christ and love his neighbor as himself, when he shall realize God s omnipotence and the healing power of the divine Love in what it has done 2017 The Publishing Society.
