Scientific foreseeing It is the prerogative of the ever-present, divine Mind, and 12 of thought which is in rapport with this Mind, to know the past, the present, and the future :8 9 It is generally conceded that God is Father, eternal, self- 9 created, infinite. 3 29:14 Those instructed 15 in Christian Science have reached the glorious perception that God is the only author of man. The Virgin-mother conceived this idea of God, and 18 gave to her ideal the name of Jesus that is, Joshua, or Saviour :26 29 The Fatherhood of God Mary s conception of 27 him was spiritual, for only purity could reflect Truth and Love, which were plainly incarnate in the good and pure. Christ Jesus 5 29:20, 32 1 The illumination of Mary s spiritual sense put to 21 silence material law and its order of generation, and brought forth her child by the revelation of Spiritual Truth, demonstrating God as the Father of conception 24 men. The Holy Ghost, or divine Spirit, overshadowed the pure sense of the Virgin-mother with the full recognition that being is Spirit. 3 27 an idea in the bosom of God, the divine Principle of the man Jesus, and woman perceived this spiritual idea, though at first faintly developed. Jesus was the offspring of Mary s self- 1 conscious communion with God :31 1 (to 1 st.) Jesus spiritual origin and his demonstration of divine Principle richly endowed him and entitled him to sonship 1 in Science. 6 Micah 5:2 thou, 3 (to :) Section 2 2 thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. 3 Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: 7 Isaiah 9:6, 7 (to 1 st.) 6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. 8 Luke 2:1, And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cæsar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judæa, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. Jesus the way-shower 9 Christ expresses God s spiritual, eternal nature. 5 11 546:23 26 Section 3 Christian Science is dawning upon a material age. 24 The great spiritual facts of being, like rays of light, shine 12 95:23 in the darkness, though the darkness, comprehending them not, may deny their reality. Dawning of spiritual facts Led by a solitary star amid 24 the darkness, the Magi of old foretold the Messiahship of Truth. Is the wise man of to-day believed, when he beholds the light which heralds Christ s eternal dawn 27 and describes its effulgence? :19 22, 23 Jesus was the highest human concept of the perfect man. He was inseparable from 21 Christ, the Messiah, the divine idea of God outside the flesh. Angels announced to the Wisemen of 24 old this dual appearing, and angels whisper it, through faith, to the hungering heart in every age. 13 Isaiah 40:1, 11 Section 4 1 Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. 11 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. 14 Ezekiel 34:11, For thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out. 23 And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. 15 Luke 2:8 16, 20, 52 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, 2017 The Christian Science Publishing Society. 6 good will toward men. 15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. 16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man. 16 I Peter 5:4 when 4 when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. Section 4 14 vii:2 10 The wakeful shepherd beholds 3 the first faint morning beams, ere cometh the full radiance of a risen day. So shone the pale star to the prophetshepherds; yet it traversed the night, and came where, in 6 cradled obscurity, lay the Bethlehem babe, the human herald of Christ, Truth, who would make plain to benighted understanding the way of salvation through Christ 9 Jesus, till across a night of error should dawn the morning beams and shine the guiding star of being :23 Morning. Light; symbol of Truth; revelation and 24 progress :9 9 Truth and Love enlighten the understanding, in whose light shall we see light; and this illumination is reflected spiritually by all who walk in the light and turn 12 away from a false material sense :10 13 The incarnation of Truth, that amplification of wonder and glory which angels could only 12 whisper and which God illustrated by light and harmony, is consonant with ever-present Love. 17 Isaiah 61:1 Section 5 1 The spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 18 Luke 4: And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. 15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. 16 And he came to Nazareth, 2017 The Christian Science Publishing Society. 7 where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. 17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. 19 Matthew 9:35 35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. Section :26 30 The mission of Jesus confirmed prophecy, and ex- 27 plained the so-called miracles of olden time as natural demonstrations of the divine power, demonstrations which were not understood. Jesus works 30 established his claim to the Messiahship. 19 xi: The physical healing of Christian Science results now, as in Jesus time, from the operation of divine Principle, before which sin and disease lose their real- 12 ity in human consciousness and disappear as naturally and as necessarily as darkness gives place to light and sin to reformation. Now, as then, these mighty works 15 are not supernatural, but supremely natural. They are the sign of Immanuel, or God with us, a divine influence ever present in human consciousness and re- 18 peating itself, coming now as was promised aforetime, To preach deliverance to the captives [of sense], And recovering of sight to the blind, 21 To set at liberty them that are bruised :14 18 The proofs of Truth, Life, and Love, which Jesus gave 15 by casting out error and healing the sick, completed his earthly mission; but in the Christian Church Healing this demonstration of healing was early lost, early lost 18 about three centuries after the crucifixion :26 13 Christian Science as old as God This healing power of Truth 27 must have been far anterior to the period in which Jesus lived. It is as ancient as the Ancient of days. It lives through all Life, and extends throughout 30 all space The Christian Science Publishing Society. All rights reserved. 7

8 Divine metaphysics is now reduced to a system, to a form comprehensible by and adapted to the thought of 1 the age in which we live. This system enables the learner to demonstrate the divine Principle, Reduction to system 3 upon which Jesus healing was based, and the sacred rules for its present application to the cure of disease. 6 Late in the nineteenth century I demonstrated the divine rules of Christian Science. They were submitted to the broadest practical test, and everywhere, when honestly ap- 9 plied under circumstances where demonstration was humanly possible, this Science showed that Truth had lost none of its divine and healing efficacy, even though cen- 12 turies had passed away since Jesus practised these rules on the hills of Judæa and in the valleys of Galilee. 20 Revelation 22:16 Section 6 16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. 21 Revelation 2:26 he, he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: 28 And I will give him the morning star. 22 II Peter 1:19 19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Section :8 As a material, theoretical life-basis is found to be a 9 misapprehension of existence, the spiritual and divine Principle of man dawns upon human thought, The immortal and leads it to where the young child was, birth 12 even to the birth of a new-old idea, to the spiritual sense of being and of what Life includes. Thus the whole earth will be transformed by Truth on its pinions of light, 15 chasing away the darkness of error :13 17, 31 Jesus taught the way of Life by demonstration, that we may understand how this divine Principle heals 15 the sick, casts out error, and triumphs over death. Jesus presented the ideal of God better Effective triumph than could any man whose origin was less spiritual.
