A proverb (from the Latin proverbium) is a simple and concrete saying popularly known and repeated, which expresses a truth based on common sense or the practical experience of mankind. They are often metaphorical. Proverbs are often borrowed from different languages and cultures, and sometimes come down to the present through more than one language. The study of proverbs is called paremiology (from Greek paremia = proverb). "A proverb is a short, generally known sentence of the folk which contains wisdom, truth, morals, and traditional views in a metaphorical, fixed and memorizable form and which is handed down from generation to generation. (Mieder 1985:119; also in Mieder 1993:24) Subgenres include proverbial expressions ( to bite the dust ), proverbial comparisons ( as busy as a bee ), proverbial interrogatives ( Does a chicken have lips? ) and twin formulas ( give and take ). " Idioms are also very important in the language.the meaning of an idiom cannot be deduced by knowing the meaning of its constituent words. For example, someone might know perfectly well what a bucket is and also understand the meaning of the verb "to kick" completely. However, unless they had already encountered the meaning of the phrase or were able to tell from the 5
context the phrase appears in, they would not know that to kick the bucket is one of the many colourful idioms in the English language meaning to die. (L.Sauka.
ALL IS WELL THAT ENDS WELL. ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD A BIRD IN THE HAND IS WORTH TWO IN THE BUSH BETTER LATE THAN NEVER EASIER SAID THAN DONE LIVE AND LEARN NEVER TOO LATE TO LEARN SILENCE IS GOLDEN THERE S NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE TIME IS MONEY WALLS HAVE EARS TIME IS A GREAT HEALER TO TAKE THE BULL BY THE HORNS ON CLOUD NINE A DROWNING MAN WILL CLUTCH AT A STRAW VISKAS GERAI, KAS GERAI BAIGIASI NE VISKAS AUKSAS, KAS AUKSU ŽIBA GERIAU ŽVIRBLIS RANKOJ, NEI BRIEDIS LANKOJ GERIAU VĖLIAU, NEI NIEKADA LENGVIAU PASAKYTI, NEI PADARYTI GYVENI IR MOKAISI NIEKADA NEVĖLU MOKYTIS TYLĖJIMAS - AUKSAS NĖRA DŪMŲ BE UGNIES LAIKAS PINIGAI IR SIENOS TURI AUSIS LAIKAS GERIAUSIAS GYDYTOJAS IMTI JAUTĮ UŽ RAGŲ DEVINTAM DANGUJ SKĘSTANTIS IR UŽ ŠIAUDO GRIEBIASI 7

Individualus darbas. Mokiniai renkasi labiausiai patikusius frazeologizmus. INDIVIDUALUS DARBAS Renkuosi mėgiamą posakį. Iš pateikto sąrašo mokiniai rinkosi tuos posakius, kuriuos norėtų išmokti ir iliustruoti: put all your eggs in one basket, pull someone s leg, put yourself in someone s shoes, rain cats and dogs, read between the lines, wear one s heart on ones s sleeve, once in a blue moon, when pigs fly, be all ears, to beet around the bush, feel like a fish out of water, (somebody s) heart sinks, be in the same boat, out of a frying pan and ino the fire, home is where the heart is, money doesn t grow on trees, time flies, too many cooks spoil the broth, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, curiosity killed the cat, lick someone s shoes, storm in a tea cup, to have green fingers, born with a silver spoon in his mouth, to take the bull by the horns, on cloud nine 9
