It is also called "a memorial proclaimed with a blast of horns" (Lev. :). e day acquired a solemn significance and was transformed into a " of Judgment," so named in post-biblical writings. According to an ancient tradition, the first day of ishri marks the first day of creation, on the anniversary of which mankind is judged by God. e dominance idea of judgment gave the day a solemn character, approaching that of Atonement. Judgment is passed on New Year and the decree is sealed on the of Atonement. e blasts shofar send a tremor through the congregation. It is a sign of alarm: the destiny of the world is being settled for the coming year. e sounding ram's-horn, commanded in the Bible, is interpreted as a reminder ram which Abraham sacrificed in place of Isaac.
