1 1 2 6/4/17 Zech Zechariah just finished describing the repentance and conversion of the remnant of Israel through the Spirit of grace and supplication at the close of chapter 12. Chapter 13 is the continuation describing the outcome of their repentance to a life of purity and sanctification devoted to Yahweh. 13:1-6 The cleansing and purification of idolatry. 13:1 The provisions for forgivness from sin for the remnant. 1) The context is still In that day, the end of the Great-Tribulation, at the Second Coming to establish the Kingdom Age. a) Three times it appears in this chapter. vs. 1, 2, 4 b) Some very good Bible scholars believer verse one should be the last verse of chapter 12. c) I see it as a transitional verse, looking back to 12 and forward to chapter 13. 2) The fountain is opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleaness. a) The idea of a fountain symbolizes God s spiritual cleansing of their sin and uncleanness by the Spirit of grace and supplication. Zech. 12:10-11 b) The word is a cleansing agent. Jn. 15:3; Eph. 5: 26; 1Jn. 1:7 c) The idea is atonement and sanctification are in mind here. Jer. 31:33-34; Acts 3:19-21; Rom. 11:1-29; Heb :2 The purification of the land of idols and demons. 1) The context is the same, It shall be in that day. vs. 2a 2) The authority is Divine, the highest, says the LORD of hosts. vs. 2b * The captain of the armies of heaven. 3) Jesus will cleanse the land of idolaty, that I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, and they shall no longer be remembered. vs. 2c-d a) No more panthism nor polytism. b) No mor amulets and religious superstitions. c) Paul says, the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. 1Cor. 10:20 * Idols and fornication go together. 4) Jesus will cleanse the land from the demonic false prophets, I will also cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to depart from the land. vs. 2e a) Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you

2 3 4 from all your filthiness and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God. Ezk. 36:25-28 b) Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons. 1Tim. 4:1 13:3 There will be loyalty to God over family. 1) Parents will not tolerate unfaithfulness to Jesus and be the first to confront, It shall come to pass that if anyone still prophesies, then his father and mother who begot him will say to him, You shall not live, because you have spoken lies in the name of the LORD. vs. 3a-b 2) The parent will put to death the unloyal child, And his father and mother who begot him shall thrust him through when he prophesies. vs. 3c 13:4-6 The false prophets will be exposed. 1) In that day, the false prophets will not be as courageous and arrogant as in the Tribulation period, but ashamed of his vision when he propheices. vs. 4a 2) In that day, the false prophets will not be as bold to display themselves as prophets, They will not wear a robe of coarse hair to decieve. vs. 4b * Attempting to afflict themselves, but really are attempting to deceive people. 3) In that day the false prophets will deny they are such, But he will say, I am no prophet, I am a farmer; for a man taught me to keep cattle from my youth. vs, 5 a) They will confess the are frauds. b) The acknowlege their deception. * Amos used similar words to prove he was called of God. Amos 7:14 4) In that day the prophets will be questioned, And one will say to him, What are these wounds between your arms? Then he will answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends. vs. 6 a) This verse has two schools of interpretation. One applies it to the false prophet, the other to Jesus Christ. b) The word is used self-inflicting wounds as spiritual devotion to deceive. c) The context is the false prophet, but there is no reason why it cannot also apply to Christ. 1)) The next verse deals with the First Coming.

3 5 6 2)) Ezekiel begins addressing the King of Tyre and moves on to speak of Lucifer. Ezk. 28: )) Jesus received the wounds of the scourging and crucifixion at the hands of his brethren, the house of His friend. 4)) Jesus received these wounds because they believed He was a deceiver, a false Messiah. Jn. 20:25 5)) They will look upon Him whom they have pierced. Zech. 12:10: Rev. 1:7 13:7-9 The smiting of the Shepherd and the remnant. 13:7 The curucifixion of Christ by Israel. 1) The prophecy is about the crucifixion of Christ by Israel, Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd. vs. 7a-c a) The phrase awaken the sword refers to both the exact prophetic time and the end result of death. vs. 7a-b * The death of Je was from the determinate council and foreknowledge of God. Acts 2:23: Is. 53:10 b) The speaker is God the Father calling His Son, My Shepherd, emphesizing deity. vs. 7c 1)) Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd. Jn. 10:11, 14 2)) The true Shepherd. Zech. 11:4-14 2) The prophecy is about the Incarnation of God, Against the Man who is My Companion. vs. 7d a) The translators recognizing the Incarnation capitalized the word Man focusing on the humanity of the Messiah to come, Jesus. b) The phrase My Companion captialized also confirms the Incarnation of God. 1)) Jesus said, I and the Father are one. Jn. 10:30 2)) If you ve seen Me, you ve seen the Father. Jn. 14:19 3) The authority is again the highest, Says the LORD of hosts. vs. 7e * The Captain of the armies of heaven. 4) The prophecy gives the consequences of the crucifixion, Strike the Shepherd, And the sheep will be scattered; Then I will turn My hand against the little ones. vs. 7f-h a) The disciples and apostles would be scattered. Matt. 26:31; Mk. 14:27 b) He would turn His hand over the little ones for protection of the apostles. * Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Lk. 12:32 13:8-9 The persecution of the remnant by the Anti-Christ. 13:8-9 The great slaughter to come.

4 7 8 1) Two of three Jews will be killed, And it shall come to pass in all the land, Says the LORD, That two-thirds in it shall be cut off and die, But one-third shall be left in it. vs. 8 * This falls under In that day, the Great- Tribulation period, under the persecution of the Antichrist. Rev. 12; Dan. 3; Rom. 11:5 2) God will preserve the remnant. vs. 9 a) Jesus will purify the 1/3 that survive, I will bring the one-third through the fire, Will refine them as silver is refined, And test them as gold is tested. vs. 9a-c 1)) Silver is symbolic of redemption. 2)) Gold is symbolic of purity. * Purified through the fire. Is. 1:25; Jer. 9:6; Mal. 3:3 b) Jesus will save them. vs. 9d-i 1)) The remnant will cry out in response to God, They will call on My name. vs. 9d 2)) The Messiah Jesus will hears their cry, And I will answer them. vs. 9e 3)) The Messiah Jesus will accept them, I will say, This is My people. vs. 9f-g * Lo ammi, not My people. Hos. 1:9 4)) The remnant will confess Jesus as their Messiah, And each one will say, The LORD is my God. vs. 9e-i * See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD! Matt. 23: :1-8 The intervention of Jesus for Israel prior to the Kingdom. 14:1-2 The siege of Jerusalem. 1) The general statement of God allowing Jerusalem to be sieged by the nations just before His coming. vs. 1 a) Zechariah again calls attention to the time period, Behold, the day of the LORD is coming. vs. 1a * The day of wrath, indignation, darkness and a day of gloom. b) The event is affirmed to be unfavorable, And your spoil will be divided in yur midst. vs. 1b * The word spoiled shalel, means plunder, spoiled of all its wealth. 2) The particular statement of God about the siege of Jerusalem. vs. 2 a) God is the One initiating the siege, For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem. vs. 2a * The battle of Armageddon. Rev 16:16-21; 19:15-21 b) God will allow the city to be occupied, The city shall be taken. vs. 2b

5 9 10 * Jerusalem will be trampled by the Gentiles, until the Times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. Dan. 2:35; 44-45; Lk. 21:24 c) The houses will be rifled or plundered. vs. 2c d) The women ravished shakab. Literally laid, indicating raped sexually. vs. 2d e) Half of the city taken, Half of the city shall go into captivity. vs. 2d d) Half of the city will stand resisting in Jerusalem, But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city. vs. 2e 14:3-6 The Lord will come to their deliverance. 1) Jesus will fight against the nations. vs. 3 a) The statemtne, As He fights in the day of battle, indicated to defeat the enemy and be victorious. b) Lord is a man of war. Ex. 15:3; Rev. 19:11-20:3 2) Jesus will make a grand appearance. vs. 4 a) Once again the day is identified, And in that day. vs. 4a * In that day, Seven times it appears in this last chapter. vs. 4, 6, 8, 9, 13, 20, 21 b) The particular location is given, His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east. vs. 4a-b c) The powerful affect is desribed, And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, From east to west, Making a very large valley; Half of the mountain shall move toward the north And half of it toward the south. vs. 4c-f 1)) Creating a large valley down to the Gulf of Aqaba. 2)) Jesus ascended from the Mount of Olives to go back to heaven and the angels told the apostles as they were gazing into heaven that Jesus would return the same manner. Acts 1:11 3) The half of those not taken captive in the city of Jerusalem will escape through this valley. vs. 5 a) At that particular time, Then you shall flee through My mountain valley, For the mountain valley shall reach to Azal. vs. 5a-b b) The certaintly is related to their past history, Yes, you shall flee As you fled from the earthquake In the days of Uzziah king of Judah. vs. 5c-d 1)) The earthquake is recorded. Amos 1:1 2)) 1/10 of Jerusalem falls. Rev. 11:13 c) Jesus will be returning with His church, Thus the LORD my God will come, And all the saints with You. vs. 5e-f 1)) This would be a better division and would be the beginning of verse six. 2)) 2Thess. 1:3-10; Jude 14-15; Rev. 19:11-16; Ps. 2 14:6-7 The super-natural affect on the day light.

6 ) The normal light of day will be affected, It shall come to pass in that day That there will be no light; The lights will diminish. vs. 6 * The word diminish qapha, means to be condensed or dense. 2) The day will be disinct like no other, It shall be one day Which is known to the LORD-- Neither day nor night. But at evening time it shall happen That it will be light. vs. 7 * Both the day and night will be the same measure of light. Is. 30:26; Mal. 4:2; Matt. 24: :8 The living water from Jerusalem. 1) The key phrase again is stated, And in that day. vs. 8a 2) The city of Jerusalem will be an incredible water source, It shall be That living waters shall flow from Jerusalem, Half of them toward the eastern sea And half of them toward the western sea. vs. 8b-c a) The living waters will divide into to different directions, one to the eastern sea, the Dead Sea. b) The other to the western sea, the Mediterranean, also called the Great Sea. c) This is the start of the Millennium, the river is described by its progressive depth and flow by Ezekiel to heal the Dead Sea to have every kind of fish like the Mediterranean, except for the marhes and fishermen will spread their nets from En Gedi to En Eglaim. On both sides of the banks fruit trees of every kind will growfor food constantly every month, due to the water flow from the sanctuary and their leaves will be for medicine. Ezk. 47:1-12 d) Joel confirms this to be so, And it will come to pass in that day That the mountains shall drip with new wine, The hills shall flow with milk, And all the brooks of Judah shall be flooded with water; A fountain shall flow from the house of the LORD And water the Valley of Acacias. Joel 3:18 3) The water source will flow all year round, In both summer and winter it shall occur. vs. 8d 14:9-15 The exaltation of Jesus in the Kingdom. 14:9 The supreme riegn at the Millennium. 1) Jesus will be King of the world, And the LORD shall be King over all the earth. vs. 9a a) Hosea says, For the children of Israel shall abide many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred pillar, without ephod or teraphim. Hos. 3:4 b) The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ and He shall reign forever and ever. Rev. 11:15

7 ) In that day the Lord shall be The LORD is one, And His name one. And His name one. vs. 9b-d a) The word one echad means a compound unity of one as in the Sheama of Israel. Deut. 6:4-5 b) Paul speaks of the end of the Millenium when Jesus will had over the Kingdom to God the Father after the last enemy is destoryed, death, and the Son will be subject to the Father that God may be all in all. 1Cor. 15: :10-11 The transformation of the land at the Millennium. 1) The topography will change in Millennium. vs. 10 a) The Judean wilderness will be a plain, All the land shall be turned into a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem. vs. 10a 1)) The plain arabah applied to the whole of the Jordan Valley. 2)) The area of Geba was a city of Benjamin, six miles north east of Jerusalem. 3)) Rimmon was a town about 35 miles in the southern portion of Judah allotted to Simeon. b) The city of Jerusalem will be raise up in elevation, expanded and inhabited, Jerusalem shall be raised up and inhabited in her place from Benjamin s Gate to the place of the First Gate and the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananeel to the king s winepresses. vs. 10b-c 1)) The present day temple mount is surrounded by mountains that are higher, like the Mount of Olive and Mount Scopus. 2)) The present temple mount also is not big enough to accommodate the Millennial Temple. 3)) The temple mount will not elevated, but expanded to accommodate the Millennial Temple. Ezk * Now it shall come to pass in the latter days That the mountain of the LORD S house Shall be established on the top of the mountains, And shall be exalted above the hills; And peoples shall flow to it. Many nations shall come and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths. For out of Zion the law shall go forth, And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. Mic. 4:1-2 2) The city of Jerusalem will be safe and secure for the people during the Millennium, The people shall dwell in it; And no longer shall there be utter destruction, But Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited. vs. 11

8 15 16 * Micah says, He shall judge between many peoples, And rebuke strong nations afar off; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war any more. But everyone shall sit under his vine and under his fig tree, And no one shall make them afraid; For the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken. For all people walk each in the name of his god, But we will walk in the name of the LORD our God Forever and ever. In that day, says the LORD, I will assemble the lame, I will gather the outcast And those whom I have afflicted; I will make the lame a remnant, And the outcast a strong nation; So the LORD will reign over them in Mount Zion From now on, even forever. And you, O tower of the flock, The stronghold of the daughter of Zion, To you shall it come, Even the former dominion shall come, The kingdom of the daughter of Jerusalem. Mic. 4:3-8 14:12-15 The Lord will punish the foes of Israel. 1) The plague will rot or decay man s flesh in Divine retribution. vs. 12 a) Those who attacked Jerusalem, And this shall be the plague with which the LORD will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem. vs. 12a b) The devastaing affect, Their flesh shall dissolve while they stand on their feet, Their eyes shall dissolve in their sockets, And their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths. vs. 12b-d 2) The Lord will bewilder His foes. vs. 13 a) The context is still the same, It shall come to pass in that day. vs. 13a b) God will bring utter confusion will come upon them, That a great panic from the LORD will be among them. vs. 13b c) They will kill each other, Everyone will seize the hand of his neighbor, And raise his hand against his neighbor s hand. vs. 13c-d * Judges 7:22; 1Sam. 14:15-20; 2Chron. 20:23 3) The Jews will collect all the spoils of war. vs. 14 a) The location, Judah also will fight at Jerusalem. vs. 14a b) The emense financial grain in the Millennium, And the wealth of all the surrounding nations Shall be gathered together: Gold, silver, and apparel in great abundance. vs. 14b-e 4) The plague will strike the animals also. vs. 15 a) The proclamation, Such also shall be the plague On the horse and the mule, On the camel and the donkey, And on all the cattle that will be in those camps. vs. 15a-c

9 17 18 b) The affirmation, So shall this plague be. vs. 15d 14:16-21 The universal worship of Jesus in the Kingdom. 14:16 The survivors of the nations will occupy the Millennial reign. 1) Their identity is unmistable, And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem. vs. 16a a) A converted remnant. Zech. 12:1-9 b) Now it shall come to pass in the latter days That the mountain of the LORD S house Shall be established on the top of the mountains, And shall be exalted above the hills; And all nations shall flow to it. Many people shall come and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths. For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, And rebuke many people; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore. Is. 2:2-4 2) Their responsibility is indisputable, shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. vs. 16a-b a) Once a year they will have to go to Jerusalem, the worship captial of the world and worship Jesus. 1)) The word worship shachah, means to bow down r prostrate oneself before a superior. 2)) The fulfillment of Scripture. Phil. 2:10-11 b) Jesus, the Lord of Host, the Captian of the armies of heaven for His righteous way of judgment, punishing ruling without violating His holiness. 3) The time of year and reason is stated, To keep the Feast of Tabernacles. vs. 16c a) The feast commemorated God s faithfulness to provide and protect Israel during the wilderness for 40 years. Lev. 23:42-44; Deut. 16:14-15, Neh. 8:17 b) They made booth during Oct to dwell in as reminder of God s faithfulness. c) The Feast celebrated thankfully the ingathering of the hearvest foreshadowing the Kingdom Age, the ingathering or harvest. d) Sacrifices will be re-instituted. Ezk. 40, 44, vs. 21-b

10 :17-19 The consequences of not coming once a year to Jerusalem. 1) There is no exception, And it shall be that whichever of the families of the earth do not come up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, on them there will be no rain. vs. 17 * Rain was a sign of God s promise blessing. Lev. 26:4-5; Deut. 28: ) There will be rebellion by some, If the family of Egypt will not come up and enter in, they shall have no rain; they shall receive the plague with which the LORD strikes the nations who do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. vs. 18 a) Egypt depended on the Nile, not rain. b) The Nile would not advantage Egypt. 3) The punishment will be to all, This shall be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. vs. 19 * Egypt used as an example. 14:20-21 The nature of the kingdom will be holiness to the Lord. 1) The horses will be sanctified to God, In that day HOLINESS TO THE LORD shall be engraved on the bells of the horses. vs. 20a a) The context is still in that day. b) This was the engraving on the High Priest s mitre as he entered the Holy of Holies. Ex. 28:5-6 2) The things of the temple will be sanctified, The pots in the LORD S house shall be like the bowls before the altar. vs. 20b a) The temple and sacrifices will be in full operation. Ezk * They are all in commemoration of the atonement of Jesus! b) Jesus is called a Branch of righteousness and His name shall be called The Lord Our Righteousness. Jer. 23:5-6 3) The common things will be sanctified to God, Yes, every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be holiness to the LORD of hosts. vs. 21a-b * The distinction between the holy and profane will be eliminated. 4) The sacrifices offered will be sanctified, Everyone who sacrifices shall com`e and take them and cook in them. vs. 21c * As commemerative, memorials. 5) No unholy thing will be in the temple, In that day there shall no longer be a Canaanite in the house of the LORD of hosts. vs. 21d a) This is the Millennial that will be followed by the New heaven and earth and the New Jerusalem. Rev b) Remember what the three name combined Zechriah, Berechiah Iddo means the Lord remembers, the Lord blesses at the appointed time. Zech. 1:1b-c
