1 1 2 4/2/17 Zechariah 5-6 We left off with Zechariah s fifth vision as God declared to him that the work of God can only be done by the enablement of His Holy Spirit and not the energies of the flesh. * If it is God s work, the individual must walk in the Spirit and do warfare with spiritual weapons. * Therefore the temple would be built by Zerubbabel and Joshua, the two olive trees. I see seven vision, some see eight, still others ten. 1. The first vision of the four horses reveals the jealousy of God for Jerusalem and was ready to punish the nations for the abuse of His people beyond what He intended. Zech. 1:7-17 * All the visions are related to the first, then expand on it and were received in one night, Feb. 24, 520 B. C. Zech. 1:7 2. The second vision of the four horns and smiths reveal the four nations that scattered Israel, the four smiths are the four nations as the agents God would use to punish the previous nation. Zech. 1:18-21 * Some count these as two visions, the second and third. 3. The third vision of the measuring line reveals the expansion of Jerusalem as God calls back the Jews and judges the nations. Zech The fourth vision is the re-clothing of Joshua revealing the past chastening of the nation in Babylon and as High Priest representing the nation is cleansed a type of our high priest Jesus in the Kingdom Age, the Branch. Zech. 3 * Those counting ten vision see two here, the 5th and 6th. 5. The fifth vision of the golden candle stand reveals the enabling of Zerubbabel and Joshua by the Spirit of God to finish the building of the temple. Zech. 4 * This would be the 7th vision for those who see ten individual visions. 6. The sixth vision of the flying scroll, the woman in the ephah and the two women, I take as one because they are related to each other. Zech. 5 * Others divide them into two visions, making them the 8th and 9th vision. 7. The seventh is the last vision of the four chariots revealing the watchers of God carrying out the will of God. Zech. 6:1-8 * This would be the tenth vision for some. 8. The crowning of Joshua is not a vision, they are over, the coronation of Joshua is a prophetic type of Jesus reigning in the Kingdom Age. Zech. 6:9-15 5:1-4 The flying scroll sixth vision. 5:1-2 The vision of the flying scroll. 1) The prophet turned and saw the next vision of the this scroll flying through the air. * Ezekiel was told to eat the scroll, it would be sweet to his mouth, but bitter to his stomach, proclaimig lamentations and woes. Ezk. 2:9-10; 3:1-4; Rev 5:1; 10:2

2 3 4 2) The prophet responds to the angels question of what he saw and told him a 20 cubit by cubit scroll. vs. 2 a) Norman cubit is 18 inches, from the middle finger to the elbow, through there were other like 21 inches. b) This is the exact size of the holy place, 15 feet by 30 feet, as well as Solomons porch. Ex. 26; 1Kings 6:3 5:3-4 The angel provided the interpretation of the flying scroll. 1) The curse refers to the consequences of disobeying the word of God based on the covenant of God with Israel. vs. 3a * The blessings and cursings. Deut ) The curse is pronounced over all the face of the whole earth. vs. 3a a) The phrase in the short-term fulfillment refers to the Jews who in spite of the captivity and returned were still disobeying the God s word and those born in captivity and still living in Babylon. b) The long-term fulfillment looks again to Great-Tribulation to set up the Kingdom Age. 3) The thief and perjurer would be punished by God, writen on both sides, as the two tables of the Ten Commandments given to Moses. vs. 3b-f; Ex. 32:15 * Thieft was the 8th commandment dealing with man s relationship to man, the perjurer was the 3rd commandment on the 1st tablet, man s relationship with God. (individual sin) 4) God would seek out the guilty in his house and judge them. vs.4 * The law demanded perfection and swift justice. Gal. 3:10; 13; Ja. 2:10; Is. 55:11 5:5-11 The woman in a basket continuation of 6th vision. 5:5-6 The angle gives understanding to the prophet. 1) The same interpretive angel told him to lift his eyes to see the object going forth. vs. 5 2) Zechariah asked what it was and the angel revealed it was a basket going forth and was known for it evil character thoughtout the earth, evident in the next verse. vs. 6 a) The word basket ephah was a measuring container and largest used by Jews, about 7 gallon. b) The measure of evil in the land, corporate sin. 5:7-8 The angel gave the prophet the interpretation. 1) There was a lead disc like shape object lifted up, perhaps like a flying saucer and a woman is sitting inside the basket. vs. 7 a) In Scripture a woman often is used for wickedness or religion opposing God.

3 5 6 b) The Parable of the woman who hid leaven in three measures of meal, introduced false doctrine and Jezebel taught calling herself a prophetess and seduced God s servants with sexual immorality and idols. Matt 13:33; Rev. 2:20 2) The angel identifies the woman in the basket as wickedness. vs. 8a a) The basket represented a measure of wicked evil in the land of Israel that would be removed that some had been brought back from Babylon. b) The Jews learned commercialism in Babylon with all of its evil and dishonest practices, for that reason the majority of the Jews remained in Babylon. 3) The angel hurled the woman into the basket to contrain her and the lid to confined her. vs. 8b-c a) God was going to purge the land of Israel and Jerusalem of the evil practices brought back from Babylon. this is the short-term. b) The land of Israel is called holy only one time in the Bible, And the LORD will take possession of Judah as His inheritance in the Holy Land, and will again choose Jerusalem. Zech. 2:12 5:9 The prophet saw in the vision two other women. 1) The two women with wings as a stork are equally evil, as birds always represent evil, like the Parable of the Sower and mustard seed that grew adnormally large. vs. 9 a) Gen. 15:11; Matt. 13:4, b) God is in full control in spite of the evil and sinfulness of men for He is greater than the god of this world. 2Cor. 4:4 2) This is a simile is introduced always by one of two words, like or as, itdoes not mean they were storks, but only describes the two women s wings as of a stork. 3) The two lifted the basket with the woman into the air, between earth and heaven. 5:10-11 The prophet is told the destination of the woman in the basket. 1) The prophet asked the angel where was the place they were carrying the basket. vs. 10 2) The angel replied to Shinar to build a house for it and set there. vs. 11 a) Shinar originally was the kingdom of Nimrod who hunted the souls of men away from God. Gen. 10:9-10 b) Babylon represents everything that stands against God and the Jews had learned all this evil in Babylon and many were still practicing the evil. c) The evil that resided in Babylon was all related to their religious practices. d) The tower of Babel was built as a religion in rebellion to God. Gen. 11

4 7 8 e) Isaaih give the short-term of the judgment of Babylon and the long-term at the end of the Great-Tribulaion, both commercial and religious. Is. 13; Rev :1-8 The four chariots seventh vision. 6:1-3 The vision observed by the prophet. 1) He turned and raised his eye as befor to look and saw four chariots. vs.1 a) The four chariots are angel of God, agents of judgment. vs. 5 b) In the first vision angelic horsemen were against Israel. Zech. 1:7-17 c) They are not representative of the four empires of the Gentiles in Daniel. Dan. 2; 7 d) These should not be confused with the four empires of the Gentiles or those of Revelation for their order is different and the angel gives the only interpretation in verse ) The two mountains have an article, so it could possibly refer to Mount Moriah or Zion and Olives, where God will judge the nations in the Valley of Jehoshaphat. Joel 3:2 * Bronze is symbolic of judgment in Scripture. 6:2-3 The four chariots described. 1) Red is symbolic of war. 2) Black is symbolic of death. 3) White is symbolic of peace, victory. 4) Dappled or grissle is symbolic of plagues and pestilence. * These should not be confused with those of Revelation for their order is different and the angel gives the only interpretation. vs. 5 6:4-5 The prophet asked the angel for the interpretation. 1) Once again Zechariah needs help, what are these my lord? vs. 4 2) These are the angelic watchers sent by God to guard and carry out order in all the earth. vs. 5 6:6 The angel gives the direction the chariots. 1) The one with the black horses is going to the north country. Ezk ) The white are going after them. 3) The dappled are going toward the south country. 6:7-8 The chariots are ordered by God to go throughout the earth. 1) They as God s agents of judgment going to and fro throughout the earth. vs. 7 2) They give rest to God s Spirit meaning His wrath in judgment. vs. 8 6:9-15 The crowning of Joshua. * This is not a vision.

5 9 10 6:9-11 The men who returned from Babylon to build the temple. 1) God told the prophet Zechariah to receive the gift from these men. vs. 9-10a a) They had not returned with the first contingent of alomost b) This is about 17 year after the fact. 2) Their names are significant. a) Heldai Chelday, means worldly from the word transient, reality of all flesh. b) Tobijah Towbiyah, means Yahweh is good, towards Israel. c) Jedaiah yah, meanss Yahweh has known, all their past unfaithfulness. d) They entered the house of Josiah Yo shiyah, means whom Yahweh heals, this was the present work God was doing. 3) God ordered Zechariah to take the gift of precious metals, make a crown and place it ont the head of Joshua. vs. 11 a) Silver is symbolic and represents redemption. b) Gold symbolizes deity. c) Joshua as the High Priest represents and is a type of Jesus prophetically. Zech. 3 d) Joshua tranlates to Jesus in the Greek. e) The crown looks to the future prophecy of Jesus to be crown as King and Priest. * Jesus would be of the tribe of Judah. 6:12-13 The interpretation is given. 1) The prophet Zechariah was to declare to Joshua the significance of the prophetic action referring to the Man whose name is the Branch. vs. 12a-f a) Of the root of Jesse and line of David mentioned before and refrring tho Coming Messiah, Jesus. Zech. 3:8 b) The branch represents humility and humanness. Is. 55:1-3; Jn. 12:24 2) He shall build the temple in the Millennium. vs. 12f-13b * The plans are all ready. Ezk ) He shall bear the glory. vs. 13c 3) He shall sit and rule His throne. vs. 13d 4) He shall be a priest on His throne. vs. 13e 5) The councel of peace shall be between them both, King and Priest, this is after the order of Melchizedek.vs. 13f * Gen. 14:18-24; Heb. 5:10; Ps. 110:4 a) There have been various temples; 1) Solomon s. 2) Zerubbabel s. (Herod s beautified and enlarged) 3) Jesus Christ s in the Millennium. b) All are considered as one, MY house shall be called a house of prayer. Matt. 21:13 c) The temple of the Antichrist is not God s temple. d) Uzziah became a leper for intervening into the priesthood being king. 2Chron. 26: :14-15 The confirmation of the prophetic interprtation regarding the crown.

6 1) The crown was to be a memorial in the temple to remember God s prophetic promise of the future to the three men. vs. 14 a) Helen Chelem means means strength. b) Tobijah Tpwbouaj meams means Yahweh is good. c) Jedaiah Y@kda yah means God has known. * Strength is in God s goodness and what He knows! 2) The building of the Millenniual temple would be done. vs. 15 a) The context is the coming BRANCH men from afar shall come and build the temple of the LORD. vs. 15a 1)) This refers to the contribution for the construction of the Kingdom temple. 2)) This refers to the Gentiles. Zech. 2:11; 8:22; Is. 2:2-4; 56:6-7; 60:1-7 b) That would allow them to know that Yahweh had sent Me to you, referring to Jesus the Messiah. vs. 15b * Again the context the Kingdom Age. c) This was assured if they diligently obeyed the voice of the LORD their God. vs. 15c 1)) Their participation will depend on their obedience. 2)) Joshua and Zerubbabel would build the temple, but Jesus, the Messiah, would yet come ultimately to build the Millennial temple
