In the Old Testament the name for God first used in the name Elohim 1. ~yhil{a/ elohim Meaning: God, god, gods 2. This name for God is more of a generic name 3. And moreover, behold, he is coming out to meet you; when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart. 15 "You are to speak to him and put the words in his mouth; and I, even I, will be with your mouth and his mouth, and I will teach you what you are to do. 16 "Moreover, he shall speak for you to the people; and he will be as a mouth for you and you will be as God to him. E. God used this name a different way in the poetry of Asaph 1. There were a number of Levites that King David assigned as worship leaders in the Tabernacle choir, according to 1 Chronicles 6: a. Asaph was one of these men (1 Chronicles 6:39). b. According to 2 Chronicles 29:30, both Asaph and David were skilled singers and poets. c. Asaph is also mentioned as a seer or prophet d. He is credited with writing Psalms 50 and Psalm 82:1 A Psalm of Asaph. God takes His stand in His own congregation; He judges in the midst of the judges (Elohim). 2 How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? For it is You who possesses all the nations. 3. The person of whom this Psalm speaks are judges in Israel a. Because of how they make decisions, they were referred to as gods b. Moses first established these judges in the wilderness, upon the advice of his father-in-law, Jethro c. And they continued to sit ever since d. Now Asaph is condeming them e. They make decisions as God would make but they are wicked and unjust F. So how does Jesus respond to the Jews intension to kill Him? Jesus and these Jewish leaders discuss the reasons for putting Him to death John 10:32-42 A. He queries them on the reasons for their intended malevolence [10:32] 1. Does He exhibit any signs of panic? 2. Why not? 3. Three reasons: a. He s convinced of the reality of God b. He s convinced that He is God s representative c. He s convinced that His Father has the power and the resources to enable Him to meet any challenge that comes before Him 4. Jesus asks them for which of His good works they intend to stone Him B. The Jews response [10:33] 1. His good works are not the reason for their imposition of capital punishment 2. Instead it is breaking the law, but if so what law? Page 3 of 8

4 3. Leviticus 24:16a 'Moreover, the one who blasphemes the name of the LORD shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall certainly stone him 4. Their accusation is in three parts: a. You are not God b. You are a man, but c. You claim to be God C. How will Jesus respond to their indictment? [10:34-38] 1. Jesus first implies that they don t know the Scriptures ( Has it not been written ) a. And then He quotes from Psalm 82:6 b. The office of judge in Israel was set up to uphold and rule according to the law of God c. They were to be representatives of God, judging in His name d. And if this designation in the Scripture as gods was appropriate to give to them, was not the designation of the Son of God even more appropriate for Jesus e. Moreover, in the Greek context, Jesus is comparing these Jewish leaders with the judges of Ps Jesus then states that: and the Scripture cannot be broken a. What does that mean? b. lu,w luo {loo'-o} Meaning: 1) to loose any person (or thing) tied or fastened 1a) bandages of the feet, the shoes, 1b) of a husband and wife joined together by the bond of matrimony 1c) of a single man, whether he has already had a wife or has not yet married 2) to loose one bound, i.e. to unbind, release from bonds, set free 2a) of one bound up (swathed in bandages) 2b) bound with chains (a prisoner), discharge from prison, let go 3) to loosen, undo, dissolve, anything bound, tied, or compacted together 3a) an assembly, i.e. to dismiss, break up 3b) laws, as having a binding force, are likened to bonds 3c) to annul, subvert 3d) to do away with, to deprive of authority, whether by precept or act 3e) Page 4 of 8

5 to declare unlawful 3f) to loose what is compacted or built together, to break up, demolish, destroy 3g) to dissolve something coherent into parts, to destroy 3h) metaph., to overthrow, to do away with c. This is a statement made by Jesus as to the inerrancy and reliability of the Scriptures d. We, like Jesus, believe in the verbal, plenary inspiration of the Scriptures [II Tim. 3:16] 3. Then He restates His claim to be sanctified and sent from God a. To have come from God is much higher in authority than one to whom God has only read God s law b. He was also sanctified by God (1) What does that mean? (2) a`gia,zw hagiazo {hag-ee-ad'-zo} Meaning: 1) to render or acknowledge, or to be venerable or hallow 2) to separate from profane things and dedicate to God 2a) consecrate things to God 2b) dedicate people to God 3) to purify 3a) to cleanse externally 3b) to purify by expiation: free from the guilt of sin 3c) to purify internally by renewing of the soul c. Finally Jesus was sent by God (1) avposte,llw apostello {ap-os-tel'-lo} Meaning: 1) to order (one) to go to a place appointed 2) to send away, dismiss 2a) to allow one to depart, that he may be in a state of liberty 2b) to order one to depart, send off 2c) to drive away (2) Jesus was sent for one particular purpose, to save the world d. But how can that one be a blasphemer, Jesus asks e. This was the same thing said of the Old Testament prophets (see e.g. Jer. 1:4-5 and about the priests and Levites (see Lev. 8:30 & Ex. 40:13) 4. Then Jesus goes back to an irrefutable position Page 5 of 8

6 a. If I was not the Son of God, how could I do the works that I am doing b. How could I feed 15,000 with a little fish and a few rolls c. How could I heal a child 13 miles away with just my word d. How could I walk on the water in the midst of a storm and then stop the storm in a moment e. How could I give sight to a man born blind 5. Jesus point is my works prove that I am the Son of God 6. Jesus concludes by saying that the Father is in Him and He is in the Father D. The Jewish leaders can restrain themselves no long [10:39] 1. Upon hearing Jesus last statement, they attack Him 2. They intend to drag Him off and kill Him in their anger and indignation 3. But He eludes their grasp a. How does He do that? b. He s God c. But John elects not to focus on that 4. John would rather go on to the good part E. Jesus returns to where He started His ministry, the place along the Jordan river where John the Baptist was first baptizing [10:40-42] 1. That would be the land of Perea 2. There Jesus stayed for a while, and people were coming to Him 3. Those who came made two comments a. John never performed any signs b. But the things he testified about this Man have been proven to be true c. What did John say about Jesus? (1) Jesus was the Lamb of God (2) Jesus would take away the sin of the world (3) He is of higher rank than me (4) He existed before me (5) I witnessed God confirm Him to be His Son Page 6 of 8
