Lesson #34 Jesus and the Feast of Sukkoth - Part 3 John 7:30-52 Presented Live on July 16, 2017 I. Introduction and review A. We must consider again the Feast of Sukkoth B. What do the feasts of God, which He set up for Israel, look to 1. They all look backward to an event in the past wherein God did a mighty work 2. And they all look forward to some event that will occur in the future involving a promise of God 3. Some of these future events have occurred and some have not C. The Feast of Sukkoth looks back at the provision that God made for the nation of Israel while they wandered the Midian wilderness 1. Slides Survival Water 2. The most important of those provisions was that of water 3. And second of course was manna D. The Feast looks forward to the Kingdom of God, the Millennial Kingdom 1. We will be celebrating the Feast of Booths in the Page 1 of 8

Millennial Kingdom 2. Zech. 14:16-18 E. But the recollection of the provision of water was what was always looked upon as the most important of their recollections at this Feast 1. Because of that, on each day of the Feast, a priest would approach the Pool of Siloam with a goblet 2. This pool is feed by a spring called the Spring of Gihon 3. The priest would fill the goblet with water from the pool and then in solemn procession proceed to the Temple 4. He would enter the Temple and proceed to the Inner Court and approach the alter 5. Then he would pour out the water onto the altar F. As we pick up the narrative in verse thirty (30), it is still in the middle of the Feast and there is a discourse going one as to who and what Jesus is II. How do the people respond to what Jesus had to say? [7:30-36] A. Some were seeking to seize Jesus but they didn t [7:30] 1. Why not? 2. They couldn t 3. Until it is Jesus time to die, no one can kill Him 4. He will select the time of His death and all other particulars 5. Consider John 10:17-18 For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. 18 No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father. 6. Consider also Luke 19: saying, If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. Page 2 of 8

43 For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side, 44 and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation. a. Why was it hidden from them? b. kairo,j kairos Meaning: time or season B. But many believed [7:31] 1. This is the reason that Jesus went public 2. There were those whose hearts were open and willing to receive Him 3. Jesus balanced their eternal destiny with the risk of danger to Himself C. The Pharisees and the Chief Priests heard what the crowd was saying and sent officers to arrest Jesus [7:32] but to no avail 1. It was not His time 2. This was of course very frustrating to the Pharisees and the Chief Priests D. Jesus provides the people with an unusual response to what is going on around Him [7:33-34] 1. He tells them that: a. He will only be with them a little longer b. He will return to the One who sent Him c. And then you will no longer be able to find Him d. And where He will be they cannot go 2. What has He said? E. The first part of what Jesus He will do is ignored, but the second part is widely discussed but without understanding [7:35-36] F. And with that, Jesus is gone III. Jesus remains reclusive until the last day of the feast [7:37-52] Page 3 of 8

A. Now He appears again in the Temple on the last day of the feast [7:37-39] 1. You remember that Sukkoth is about the remembrance of what God did for His people as they wandered in the Midian wilderness for 40 years a. What was the most life sustaining thing that He provided to them water b. Remember the events at the rock 2. Jesus may well have stepped in behind the Priest and as he was pouring out the water upon the alter on this last day, have cried out He message 3. He will provide those who respond spiritual water a. This is the same message He gave to the Samaritan woman b. There are two triggers: (1) trusting in Him, and (2) establishing a relationship with Him (3) That is what produces the spring 4. He promises that this water will be freely given 5. The thirsty will have their thirst slaked 6. But more than that, each of them that drinks, will become a water source in and of themselves 7. John then explains to us, so that we will not miss Jesus point, that this water is the Holy Spirit 8. We should understand the word glorified to mean ascended into heaven B. The response of the people [7:40-44] 1. The first century Jews believed that the Prophet and the Messiah were not the same person a. John 1:21 b. John 1:25 2. Some decide that Jesus must be the Prophet Page 4 of 8

a. Deut. 18:15 b. Both Peter and Stephen explain that the Prophet is the Messiah Acts 3:20-23; 7: Others that He is the Messiah they got it right 4. And still others that He is definitely not the Messiah a. He didn t come from Bethlehem and isn t a descendant of David, they reason, b. So He can t be the Messiah 5. But it appears that those who oppose Him are still powerless to do anything about it 6. Understand that Jesus did not come to unite mankind, just like sound doctrine does not unite, Jesus divides a. Sometimes He divides people into two groups which are believers and unbelievers, for the most part b. But many times He divides people into two groups which are those receive and trust Him, and those which seek to silence Him c. The Greek word for division is sci,sma shisma {skhis'-mah} d. This word literally means to rip, rent or tear e. To consider how this word is used look at Matthew 9:16 "But no one puts a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results f. Many might say wait, Jesus is God but a God of peace and good will, that is what the angels announced at His birth (1) He is here to unify mankind not tear them apart or set them at odds with each other (2) His message is one of love and forgiveness g. Now consider what Jesus had to say in Matthew Page 5 of 8

10:34-36 Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 "For I came to SET A MAN AGAINST HIS FATHER, AND A DAUGHTER AGAINST HER MOTHER, AND A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AGAINST HER MOTHER-IN-LAW; 36 and A MAN'S ENEMIES WILL BE THE MEMBERS OF HIS HOUSEHOLD. h. If Jesus says to follow Him, (1) if you say I will go the other way (2) if you say I will go a different way (3) if you say I go close to the way He is going (4) if you say I haven t made up my mind so I will stay here until I do C. The conversation between the Pharisees and the Chief Priests, and the officers who they sent to arrest Him [7:45-52] 1. Consider the effect that Jesus and what He was saying had on these men 2. Those who opposed Jesus did not oppose Him with Scripture or doctrinal arguments 3. Instead, they argued this way: a. We are the experts on the Messiah and believe us, He is not the Messiah b. We are the religious leaders of God s chosen people and none of us have accepted Him, that ought to tell you all you need to know 4. Consider also the religious leader s view of the crowd 5. But Nicodemus, whom I believe is a believer, speaks out a. And these leaders attack him b. But their response is not Scripturally based c. But based on a bogus argument Page 6 of 8

6. Then they make the statement that no prophet has ever come from Galilee a. They assume that Jesus was born in Galilee b. They never ask Him where He was born c. But in considering the accuracy their statement that no prophet came from Galilee (1) What about Elijah ( Kgs. 17:1) (2) Or how about Jonah (II Kgs. 14:25) (3) And maybe even Nahum (see Addendum) IV. Parting thoughts A. We should learn from living water: 1. Physical water both slacks one s thirst and produces fruitfulness 2. Living water (the Holy Spirit) satisfies the inner man and produces fruit of a spiritual/eternal nature B. The living water is meant to flow and have an effect 1. Consider Eze. 47: The Dead Sea 3. The picture of His water s effect upon a dead world C. Those who thought that Jesus was disqualified from being the Messiah because He was from Nazareth, did not go to God and ask Him 1. Do we ever make that mistake? 2. We should always seek the truth before making life changing decisions ADDENDUM Elkoshite el'-kosh-it (ha-'elqoshi; Septuagint Elkesaiou, Elkaiseou, Elkeseou): Used with the article "the Elkoshite" (Nahum 1:1). Probably a gentilic adjective giving the home of the prophet; not definitely identified. Page 7 of 8

Three traditions may be noted: (1) The Nestorians venerate the supposed tomb of the prophet in the village of Alqush not far from the east bank of the Tigris, about two days' journey almost directly north of Mosul. (2) Jerome states in the prologue to his commentary on Na that the village of Helkesei in Galilee was pointed out to him as Elkosh. This Helkesei is probably El-Kauzeh between Ramieh and Bint Jebeil. (3) The treatise De Vitis Prophetarum of the Pseudo-Epiphanius says that Nahum came from "Elkesei beyond Jordan towards Begabor and was of the tribe of Simeon." Nestle has shown that the words "beyond Jordan" are probably a gloss, and that for Begabor should be read Betogabra, the modern Beit Jibrin in Southern Palestine. In favor of this identification may be urged the following facts: (a) that parallels to the name Elkosh, such as Eltekeh and Eltekon, are found in the southern country; (b) that the word probably contains the name of the Edomite god Qaush, whose name appears in the names of Edomite kings in the Assyrian inscriptions of the 8th and 7th centuries BC, such as Qaush-malaka and the like. that the internal evidence of the prophecy makes the Judean origin of the prophet almost certain. \LITERATURE.\ Davidson, "Nah," "Hab," "Zeph," in Cambridge Bible, 9-13; G.
