Sunday, September 18, 2016 Lesson Text: Isaiah 40:21-31 King James Version (KJV) I. THE LORD S SOVEREIGNTY OVER THE EARTH (Isaiah 40:21-26) 21. Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth? 22. It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in: 23. That bringeth the princes to nothing; he maketh the judges of the earth as vanity. 24. Yea, they shall not be planted; yea, they shall not be sown: yea, their stock shall not take root in the earth: and he shall also blow upon them, and they shall wither, and the whirlwind shall take them away as stubble. 25. To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One.
26. Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth. II. THE LORD S CARE FOR HIS PEOPLE (Isaiah 40:27-31) 27. Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my judgment is passed over from my God? 28. Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. 29. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. 30. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: 31. But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
New International Version (NIV) I. THE LORD S SOVEREIGNTY OVER THE EARTH (Isaiah 40:21-26) 21. Do you not know?have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning?have you not understood since the earth was founded? 22. He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in. 23. He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing. 24. No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than he blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff. 25. To whom will you compare me?or who is my equal? says the Holy One. 26. Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens:who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls
forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. II. THE LORD S CARE FOR HIS PEOPLE (Isaiah 40:27-31) 27. Why do you complain, Jacob? Why do you say, Israel, My way is hidden from the Lord;my cause is disregarded by my God? 28. Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. 29. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31. but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
PRACTICAL POINTS: 1. God s ability stretches beyond the limitations of the earth and the entire universe is under His authority (Isaiah 40:21-22). 2. Even though governmental leaders command great authority over the lives of men, they have power only as God gives it to them (Isaiah 40:23-24; Romans 13:1). 3. There is no one or anything that can compare to God (Isaiah 40:25). 4. God s power can be seen by everyone in every night sky, revealing heavenly bodies that He knows by name and also obey Him (Isaiah 40:26). 5. There is no reason for us to conclude that God doesn t care about us when life gets hard (Isaiah 40:27). 6. God does not get tired or weary like we do and neither can we know what He knows (Isaiah 40:28). 7. God can give us strength when we become tired or weary of life s struggles (Isaiah 40:29-30).
8. Those who wait patiently on the Lord will exchange their strength for His (Isaiah 40:31). ***The Bible Expositor and Illuminator, Union Gospel Press***
