SH 298:13 20 Spiritual sense, contradicting the material senses, involves intuition, hope, faith, understanding, fruition, reality. Material sense expresses the belief that mind is in matter. This human belief, alternating between a sense of pleasure and pain, hope and fear, life and death, never reaches beyond the boundary of the mortal or the unreal. When the real is attained, which is announced by Science, joy is no longer a trembler, nor is hope a cheat. The Bible 1. Ps. 103:2 6, 8, Bless the L, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's. The L executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.... The L is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.... He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west,so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the L pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. But the mercy of the L is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children; To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them. My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass: Because I will publish the name of the L : ascribe ye greatness unto our God. He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he the L ' portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the L shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary;and they shall walk, and not faint. 4. Rom. 15:13, 14, 17, 29 I, 30, 32 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.... I have therefore whereof I may glory through Jesus Christ in those things which pertain to God I am sure that, when I come unto you, I shall come in the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ. Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me;... That I may come unto you with joy by the will of God, and may with you be refreshed. 5. I Thess. 2:13, 14 (to 1st :), 19, 20

3 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not asthe word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe. For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judæa are in Christ Jesus:... For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? For ye are our glory and joy. Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures 2. SH 14:6, To be present with the Lord is to have, not mere emotional ecstasy or faith, but the actual demonstration and understanding of Life as revealed in Christian Science. To be with the Lord is to be in obedience to the law of God, to be absolutely governed by divine Love, by Spirit, not by matter.... Sorrow is turned into joy when the body is controlled by spiritual Life, Truth, and Love. Hence the hope of the promise Jesus bestows: He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also;... because I go unto my Father, [because the Ego is absent from the body, and present with Truth and Love.] 3. SH 21:9 If the disciple is advancing spiritually, he is striving to enter in. He constantly turns away from material sense, and looks towards the imperishable things of Spirit. If honest, he will be in earnest from the start, and gain a little each day in the right direction, till at last he finishes his course with joy. 4. SH 66:6 9 (to 1st.), 11 Trials teach mortals not to lean on a material staff, a broken reed, which pierces the heart. We do not half remember this in the sunshine of joy and Salutary sorrow prosperity.... Spiritual development germinates not from seed sown in the soil of material hopes, but when these decay, Love propagates anew the higher joys of Spirit, which have no taint of earth. Each successive stage of experience unfolds new views of divine goodness and love. 5. SH 242:1 3, 9 Through repentance, spiritual baptism, and regeneration, mortals put off their material beliefs and false individuality....

4 There is but one way to heaven, harmony, and Christ in divine Science shows us this way. It is to know no other reality to have no other consciousnessof The one only way life than good, God and His reflection, and to rise superior to the socalled pain and pleasure of the senses. 6. SH 304:9 14, This is the doctrine of Christian Science: that divine Love cannot be deprived of its manifestation, or object; that joy cannot be turned into sorrow, for sorrow is not the master of joy; that good can never produce evil; that matter can never produce mind nor life result in death Divine Principle is the Life of man. 7. SH 435:12 14 good... good deeds are immortal, bringing joy instead of grief, pleasure instead of pain, and life instead of death. 8. SH 45:16 Glory be to God, and peace to the struggling hearts! Christ hath rolled away the stone from the door of human hope and faith, and through the revelationand The stone rolled away demonstration of life in God, hath elevated them to possible at-onement with the spiritual idea of man and his divine Principle, Love. 9. SH 125:12 17 As human thought changes from one stage to another of conscious pain and painlessness, sorrow and joy, from fear to hope and from faith to understanding, the visible manifestation will at last be man governed by Soul, not by material sense. Reflecting God's government, man is self-governed. 10. SH 190:14 31 Human birth, growth, maturity, and decay are as the grass springing from the soil with beautiful green blades, afterwards to wither and return to its Human frailty native nothingness. This mortal seeming is temporal; it never merges into immortal being, but finally disappears, and immortal man, spiritual and eternal, is found to be the real man. The Hebrew bard, swayed by mortal thoughts, thus swept his lyre with saddening strains on human existence: As for man, his days are as grass: As a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; And the place thereof

5 shall know it no more. When hope rose higher in the human heart, he sang: As for me, I will behold Thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Thy likeness. For with Thee is the fountain of life; In Thy light shall we see light. Hymn. 40:1-3 Come, ye disconsolate, where'er ye languish, / Here health and peace are found, Life, Truth, / and Love; / Here bring your wounded hearts, here tell / your anguish; / Earth has no sorrow but Love can remove. / Joy of the desolate, light of the straying, / Hope of the penitent, fadeless and pure; / Here speaks the Comforter, tenderly saying, / Earth has no sorrow that Love cannot cure. / Here see the Bread of Life, see waters flowing / Forth from the throne of God, pure from above; / Come to the feast of love, come, ever knowing, / Earth has no sorrow but Love can remove. Hymn. 75:1-3 God comes, with succor speedy, / To those who suffer wrong; / To help the poor and needy, / And bid the weak be strong; / He comes to break oppression, / To set the captive free, / To take away transgression, / And rule in equity. / His blessings come as showers / Upon the thirsty earth; / And joy and hope, like flowers, / Spring in His path to birth. / Before Him on the mountains / Shall Peace, the herald, go; / From hill to vale the fountains / Of righteousness shall flow. / To Him shall prayer unceasing, / And daily vows, ascend; / His kingdom still increasing, / A kingdom without end. / The tide of time shall never / His covenant remove; / His name shall stand forever: / His changeless name of Love. Hymn. 164:1-3 Joy to the world, the Lord is come, / Let earth receive her King; / Let every heart prepare him room, / And heaven and nature sing. / No more let sin and sorrow grow, / Nor thorns infest the ground; / Where'er he comes, his blessings flow, / And hope and joy abound. / He rules the world with truth and grace, / And makes the nations prove / The glories of his righteousness / And wonders of his love.
