The latest release can be found at INTRODUCTION The purpose of this report is to serve as a master reference guide for all jihadi video releases. If you need to make a determination as to whether or not a video is new or locate previously released material, this report will make that process significantly easier and allow you to rapidly narrow down your search much faster. The report currently only contains Visual Reference Images (VRIs) and text descriptions for a small percentage of the major videos released, however, we will be rapidly updating the report with both new releases and previously released material. In addition we will continue to add more contextual sections and others that provide further guidance on the issues that arise when attempting to identify and analyze jihadi videos. 6 TYPES OF JIHADI VIDEOS There are essentially seven main types of jihadi videos. While some of the shorter videos are taking on increased production value and blurring some of the lines, almost all current and past videos fit into one of these categories. Produced Videos Produced videos are the most advanced video releases done by jihadi groups and have the highest production values. These videos typically take days to weeks of intensive video editing and graphics work and generally run 1-2 hours in length. The source material for these videos run a wide range but typically includes material from all of the following categories: news footage, operational/training footage, statements by group members and animated sequences. These videos are often disseminated on both VCD and through Internet release points. At times the groups will also provide these directly to various media outlets. Groups such as al-qaeda will go so far as to produce multiple versions of videos with subtitles in various languages in order to increase its audience. Due to the amount of effort and resources needed to produce one of these videos it is rare for a group to produce more than 1-2 a year and releases are generally timed to signify an important development or point in time. Operational Videos Operational videos are short quick video clips of attacks executed by a group. They frequently only show one attack per clip and generally run between 1-8 minutes in length. Originally these videos had no real production values in terms of graphics and other editing techniques but as the speed and ease with which these effects can be generated has dramatically dropped, title screens, animated bugs and other graphics are becoming commonplace. In areas where there is a great volume of operational activity, it is not uncommon for groups to release new videos every couple days. Due to the quantity and speed of release for these videos, the Internet is the most frequent vehicle for their dissemination. Hostage Videos Hostage videos from jihadi groups came to great attention in the wake of the Daniel Pearl kidnapping in Pakistan and then rapidly evolved due to events in Saudi Arabia and Iraq. 7 These videos are much like the operational videos in terms of production value and duration. The significant difference is that they are used as part of a tool in an ongoing operation. Demands are frequently made even when the group knows there is no likelihood of them being met and the fate of the hostage has already been determined. The video is merely a vehicle for the group to increase the amount of attention and play the group gets in media outlets and enhance the psychological and political impact of the operation. Statement Videos Statement videos are frequently made by jihadi group members in the mid- to senior tiers of an organization. They are made and released for a multitude of reasons including but not limited to: the claiming of attacks, statements of political positions, threats, as a morale boost, recruiting and fund raising. These videos will typically run anywhere from a few minutes to in excess of an hour. Much like with operational videos, there is a growing amount of production value in the videos as opposed to five years ago. The videos are frequently released directly to media outlets in addition to being released on the Internet. Al-Qaeda has been known to produce English sub-titled versions of these much like it does for its produced videos. Tribute Videos Tribute videos are short videos released solely for the purpose of commemorating the death of an emir, significant group members or when a large number of members are killed. These are most often made when the cause of death was from actions by security forces or other unexpected causes as opposed to the subject s participation in a martyrdom operation. When the death is the result of a martyrdom operation the tribute is typically part of a much longer produced video. Internal Training Videos Internal training videos are those videos produced by a group to document its training efforts for internal use. The videos are never intended in their original form to be shown to the public at large or even in a broad manner within the group. The appearance of these videos most frequently occurs during raids when security forces seize them. The most Page 7 of 47 JMVG - v May 2006

8 commonly seen ones are those taken from al-qaeda camps in Afghanistan shortly after They commonly have no graphics and little if any editing. Instructional Videos Instructional videos are those videos produced to train jihadi members through the video on how to accomplish a certain task or develop a specific skill. One of the most widely known of these types of videos is a 27-minute video on how to produce a suicide bomber belt/vest. These videos typically do utilize onscreen graphics in order to better convey key points of the lesson. AUDIENCES When a jihadi group releases a video, especially a produced video, the video is typically designed to reach multiple audiences and achieve a number of different objectives. While there are always exceptions, the audiences typically are the targets of the groups operations in the broad sense, the group s members, potential recruits and financial donors. The objectives typically are to enhance the impact of the group s operational efforts, make its presence known and establish its identity, drive fund raising and recruitment, show donors the value of their contributions and boost morale. Targets (Broadly Defined) The videos are a form of a follow-on psychological attack on the victims and societies the group is targeting. They are designed to amplify the effect of attacks while showing that the group is still very much alive, active and a threat to be taken seriously. Group s Members Much like any corporation or other organization produces videos to boost morale and show its geographically disconnected members what it has been doing, jihadi groups do the same. Videos illustrate the achievements of the group and its individual members thus boosting morale and pride in the group s activities. The videos also provide a way for senior leadership to speak directly to its members. Page 8 of 47 JMVG - v May 2006

9 Potential Recruits When potential jihadists are looking for a group to join or considering changing allegiance, videos provide a glimpse into the organization they are considering. It gives insights into the type of people, operations, ideology and focus of the group. Much like military recruitment ads and promotions, the videos work to establish an organizational identity that the potential recruit wants to be associated with. Financial Donors Once again, like any other organization with investors or donors who want to see what their money has done, jihadi groups are no different. The videos provide a vehicle for the group to show not just what it is but also what actions it has taken. This enables donors/backers to feel a better sense of value for their contributions, especially in places like Iraq where there may be multiple groups competing for the same donations. 10 GUIDANCE ON DATING/CLASSIFYING JIHADI VIDEOS When attempting to date jihadi video material there are multiple dates that carry different significance depending upon the issue at hand. In the case of direct statements such as those frequently seen coming from Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-zawahiri there are always three key dates pertaining to any release. The three dates are: 1) RELEASE DATE: This is the date the video is aired by the media or it goes into release on the Internet or VCD form. In some cases this needs to be qualified with the date the material was actually made available to the media outlet. Typically the date the material is received and the date the material is aired are within two days of each other. In most cases the air date is considered to be the most significant date when evaluating the timing of threat statements and possible correlations to attacks. 2) PRODUCTION DATE: This is the date actually written by al-qaeda on the material itself and generally reflects when the finished product was completed. On video material it typically appears on one of the intro title screens. On audio material it may not be spoken in the beginning but might be included in the file annotations or will often appear in a written transcript that is frequently released simultaneously with the audio file. There is typically a gap of between a few weeks to more than a month between the Release Date and the Production Date. The gap is reflective of the time it takes for the material to get from where it was produced to the release channel, be it the Internet or a media outlet. 3) RECORDING DATE: This would be the date that the actual statement was recorded. In other words, the day that Osama bin Laden or Ayman al-zawahiri sat down and made the recording. Depending upon the production qualities this could be the same as the Production Date or may be weeks or more before, presuming the Production Date is set to when it is completed and not set against the Recording Date in which case they would always be one in the same. In the case of an audio recording where not much post work needs to be completed these dates are likely to be very close together. The higher the production value for video material the greater the gap. For example, an al-zawahiri video that has English subtitles, new animation in the opening sequence and other effects Page 10 of 47 JMVG - v May 2006

11 entails days to weeks of work on powerful computers that increases the gap of time between when the material was recorded and when the final release was completed. Note on the "al-qaeda Messaging/Attacks Timeline & Most Commonly Listed Dates by ": The "al-qaeda Messaging/Attacks Timeline" and most reporting weighs the Release Date the heaviest followed by the Production Date and then the Recording Date. Additional relevant factors that impact the significance of the various dates are also factored in and weighed. The date that is determined to be the most significant is then the one used in the timeline. Note on dates as they pertain to other materials such as Produced Videos: When examining other types of video material such as Produced Videos other dates come into play as the material frequently includes a mix of both new and old material. Four Main Categories of Jihadi Video Releases: 1) New Release/New Material/New Recording (NNN) - material that is both recently recorded and never before released 2) New Release/New Material/Old Recording (NNO) - material that has never before been released but is from an old recording 3) New Release/Old Material/Old Recording (NOO) - material that has appeared in some form before but is being newly released by the group 4) New Release/Modified Material/Old Recording (NMO) - material was previously released but has been significantly altered in a way that differentiates it from the previous version Page 11 of 47 JMVG - v May 2006

12 JIHADI VIDEO BUGS One of the fastest and most reliable ways to identify jihadist video material is by the bugs that appear on their videos. These bugs as they are known in the television industry are no different than what you would see on CNN, NBC or any other network. They are generally comprised of a small logo that appears in one of the four corners of the screen. Sometimes they are static and sometimes they are animated. Below are examples of some of the primary bugs used by different jihadist video outfits. As this report is regularly updated additional bug examples will be added. It is important to note that these bugs sometimes are the same as the group s logo, such as in the case of Qaeda al-jihad Organization in the Land of Two Rivers, and sometimes they are only representative of the group s video production arm, such as in the case of al-qaeda s as-sahab Institute for Media Production. 13 as-sahab Institute for Media Production As-Sahab Institute for Media Production is the media production arm of al-qaeda and is currently responsible for producing their video, audio and written materials. 14 Labaik for Media Production Labaik for Media Production has been producing operational, hostage, statement and produced videos on activities in Afghanistan since at least Jun Since the Bagram escapees made their escape in Jul. 2005, the bulk of the Labaik videos have featured them. It is also currently the only group producing beheading videos from Afghanistan. The fighters appearing in the videos are believed to be a mix of al-qaeda, Taliban and other jihadi fighters. In the video al-zawahiri also threatens countries working in Afghanistan and Iraq.
