1 JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2018 Principal s Message Welcome back! Returning to school in January is always filled with renewed energy and resolve to make a positive difference in the lives of all the members of our school community. Please remember to phone the school office before 8:30 a.m. whenever your child is absent. Please mention your child s name, grade and the reason of his/her absence. (604) If you have a change of address and phone number please inform the secretary. We start 2018 with a focus on responsibility. Working with students to help them learn to accept personal responsibility is a critical part of what we do each day. Being responsible means others can depend on you. You are accountable for your actions. When things go wrong and you make a mistake, you make amends instead of excuses. When you are responsible, you keep your agreements. You give your best to any job. Responsibility is also one of the Learning Skills reported on the Report Cards. As we begin the New Year it is always a good time to focus once again on our personal goals and to adjust and fine tune the steps we must take to achieve them. I encourage parents to sit down with their child(ren) and discuss their performance, celebrate the successes and develop goals and next steps. Finally, I wish everyone a very Happy New Year and I look forward to witnessing the many successes and achievements of our students as the year unfolds. Early enrollment helps us to make crucial planning decisions. Stay Tuned! MILK PROGRAM The milk program started today until March 16th and is distributed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays to all students who paid for it last term. Students turning five years of age on or before December 31, 2018, are eligible to begin primary in September To register a child, parents will be required to complete a registration form, provide identification for their child with their date of birth (i.e. birth certificate or Canadian legal document), parents Canadian legal document, immunization record, health card number and proof of residence (i.e. driver s license, utility bill) as well as $ administration fee that you can pay cash or by B A K E S A L E cheque. All proceeds will go to purchasing prizes for the Quran and Duaa Competitions. Everything is $1 or $2. Samosas, Pizza Slices, Old Dutch Assorted Chips, Kernels Popcorn, Juice Boxes, Krispy Kreme Donuts and Chocolate (ALL HALAL).

4 January / February 2018 All of our students are working very hard in learning these important Duaas (supplications) and preparing for this exciting event. In order for them to be successful in this Duaa competition, I would strongly urge you to spend some time with your children every day for at least 15 minutes practicing and memorizing these beautiful Duaas that our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) taught us. The students will memorize all of the Duaas that they have been given corresponding to their grade level. All students are encouraged to participate in this exciting event. All students will be assessed for correct pronunciation and memorization according to grade level, and winners from each class will receive special prizes. May Allah (SWT) reward you for your ongoing support and cooperation, and may Allah (SWT) make our children successful in both worlds, Ameen. Quran Competition notice was sent to parents on January 11. Please ensure you fill the permission form and return it back to the teacher by January 23, The contest is open school wide. The date for registration is no later than January 23. The contest will be held during school hours and there may be a panel of external guest judges to evaluate the students. 5 January / February 2018 POETRY OF INSTITUTE OF CANADA Young Writers The Grade 7 students had their poetry unit. Hafsa Buttar submitted her poem to the Young Writers contest. It is with great pleasure that I inform you that Hafsa s poem has been selected to be published in the book of verse, entitled Splashing Puddles, National Library of Canada, Ottawa, Poetry of Institute of Canada. Final selections for cash prizes and award of excellence certificates are to be judged in late spring Congratulations Hafsah for your achievement! S c a r s Hafsah Buttar Every bruise, every wound, every scar, makes me who I am. Because each and every one there is a story that makes me stronger. The bruises on my knees, so dark and painful, remind me that if you fall down many times, you can still reach for the shining stars high above the sky. The wounds on my elbows remind me that each and every time you fail, you can still start a fresh new beginning. And all the scars that people have left on me, make me more confident Myself. The memories that those scars bring back might be painful to some, but those very scars remind me that when people try to push you down you need to get back up and fight. Whenever you look back at your scars, remember that behind each and every one there is a story that makes you stronger. The Parent Advisory Committee is taking this opportunity to thank you for supporting the Surrey Muslim School at the fundraising dinner. With your continued support we can make our school better every year and build a better future for our next generation youth. 6 January / February 2018 School Closure The school will be closed on the following dates: Uniform Required Monday, February 12 (Family Day) Friday, March 16 to Monday, April 2 (March Believers are promised great rewards for expending their wealth, wholeheartedly in the path of Allah Ta ala. Sadaqah is a virtuous deed in Islam, and a reminder to us that the wealth we possess, is simply a loan from Allah, for which we will be held accountable in the Aakhirah. Allah Ta ala exhorts us to spend on the poor and needy, from the wealth that has been allotted to us. All forms of wealth essentially come from Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta ala, and our spending on those in need, is highly appreciated by Allah Ta ala. In His Infinite Mercy, Allah Ta ala equates our giving of charity as a loan to Him! (even though HE does not need it). And, this investment with Allah Ta ala will provide everlasting sustenance in Dunya and Aakhirah. An example of this guaranteed promise, is mentioned in Verse 261 of Surah Baqarah : The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-encompassing and Knowing.

7 JANUARY / February 2018 The Prophet SWS said to the nearest meaning. Verily, the reward of deeds depends upon the Niyyah (intentions) and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. Therefore, every action that was not performed solely for Allah s Sake, is annulled and fruitless in this life and the Hereafter. There are two implications for the word Niyyah according to the scholars. One of them pertains to distinguishing acts of worship from acts of habit. For instance, there is a difference between taking a bath to remove impurity (to be able to pray and engage in other acts of worship), and taking a bath to cool off. The second meaning for Niyyah pertains to distinguishing between the intention behind the act if it is directed to Allah Alone or to Allah and others. This meaning carries with it happiness or misery and reward or punishment. Sometimes, the act might be for Allah and is mixed with showing off. In this case, there are authentic texts asserting that if the intention of showing off was present at the time one intended to perform a righteous act, the act itself will be annulled and fruitless. But when the act was started to gain Allah s reward alone, but changed later on to include an intention to partially show off, then it will not annul the act, provided one strives to repel such thoughts. As Muslims therefore, we should worship Allah in sincerity and stay away from Riya (showing off) and evil intentions. We know from Quran and hadith that Allah does not look at one s shapes and wealth, but rather at one s hearts and actions.
