The course will provide students a broad rudimentary framework for understanding the history, culture and sociology of Lahore, so as to provide, through direct experiences, an understanding of the city and its people as it exists today. The course will help students to understand and experience at first hand Lahore, so as help students to understand the key themes and forces over time that shaped it. Students will undertake three visits to the city with specific objectives. A short research exercise will also be planned so as to understand relatively recent upheavals in the life of the city and its people, and how they still continue to shape the way we think about our national narratives. This will open up the way for a possible deeper research exercise of the social, cultural, intellectual, environmental and technological histories of the city, in which secondary and primary text sources will be of immense assistance

2 COURSE OBJECTIVES To provide students with an introduction to the history and people of Lahore from the earliest times to the present. Learning Outcomes The course is designed to, firstly, introduce the history of Lahore in its elementary form, and, secondly, to impart content knowledge relating to key themes and issues in its history, culture and sociology. Grading Breakup Class Participation 20% Attendance 10% Written Assignment 1 10% Written Assignment 2 10% Class Quiz -1 10% Class Quiz -2 10% Mid-Term Exam 10% Final Exam 20% This course is designed to facilitate active learning, coupled with the ability to research and to make original presentations with flair. To achieve excellence students are expected to attend each class and complete assigned readings so as to offer informed contributions to class discussions. I will regularly take attendance and assign occasional homework exercises throughout the semester. The two class quizzes that collectively count for 20% of the total grading, will be undertaken without notice. The participation component of the final grade will be based on how actively students engage in discussions and other exercises completed during class and how well they prepare themselves by reading and thinking about the assigned material before class. Questions are encouraged, as is the respect for the views of others. The dates for the Mid-Term and Final Exams shall be announced in advance, as will be those for the submission of the two written assignments. These dates are final and regardless of your extracurricular in LUMS or elsewhere. Requests for grade revisions will NOT be tolerated. The Instructor s grading is final. If this is unacceptable, do not take this course. It is a requirement of this course that all participants purchase a hardcopy (paper copy) of the Course Pack at the beginning of the Course. If you are unable or unwilling to do so, then do not take the course.
