Message from the Masjid board Assalamu Alaikum, Alhamdulillah, construction on the Masjid expansion has started in October. We earnestly request our brothers and sisters to continue to support this project by making Dua and donating generously. Insha Allah, this expansion will bring our youth and community together in the Masjid. The Masjid board of directors and trustees would like to thank our respected community members who are supporting the activities of the Masjid in many ways. Alhamdulillah, there has been many instances of generosity that our community has demonstrated: our youth and community staying in the Masjid to provide security to the Masjid during overnight hours, iftar and dinner hosted during the month of Ramadan and sponsoring the eid dinner are just a few of these. It is a great privilege for the Masjid board to work with our community and members of the Muslim community at large who generously and readily support the Masjid projects. We would like to thank Hafiz Abu Bakkar for his services during taraweeh in the month of Ramadan. We would also like to thank Br. Bashir Chaudhary for his tireless work over the years and preparing the Eid dinner. May Allah reward everyone for their efforts. (Aameen) The Masjid board is implementing a process called Masjid wish list to enable our community members to become more involved in the Masjid. We receive suggestions from community members on various issues pertaining to the Masjid. While members of the Masjid Board like to act upon these suggestions, it is not always feasible. The community can help us as follows: Anyone that has an idea for improving something in the Masjid is requested to approach any board member to obtain approval from the board, for their project. If the project is approved by the Masjid board, the community member will then be responsible to implement the project, from generating funds through donations or sponsorships to completing the project, in a timely manner. The project should be completed as approved by the board without any additions or modifications. Insha Allah, the Masjid elections are fast approaching and Islamic Association of Michigan members are requested to participate in the elections by nominating candidates for election and returning the ballots in a timely manner. The outgoing members of the board would like to thank our community members for providing us with the privilege to serve our Masjid and the community. Jazak Allah Khair. Our website and list are easy ways to find out about events at the Masjid. Website: Board of Directors, Masjid Umar bin Khattab/Islamic Association of Michigan. 2 Page 2 Masjid Umar Bin Khattab-IAM November 2011 Newsletter Imam s Corner: by Mufti Patel: Importance of Hajj The fact that Haj has been granted the status of being the fifth pillar of Islam is itself an indication of its importance in Deen. Indeed, such stress has been laid on the performance of Haj that no person upon whom Haj has become compulsory should ever delay in fulfilling this obligation. Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) is reported to have said: "The one who was not prevented from Haj by a definite need, or a tyrant ruler, or a severe illness and he passed away without having performed the Haj, then he may pass away if he wishes as a Jew or, if he wishes, as a Christian'' (Daarmi). Allahu Akbar! What a stern warning! A person who delays in performing the obligatory Haj without a valid excuse is being warned of a bad death (may Allah Ta'ala protect us all). Hence Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) is reported to have said: "He who intends to perform (the obligatory) Haj should hasten in performing it" (Abu Dawood). Therefore the one who can afford to perform Haj must never delay in doing so. The one who delays its performance without a valid reason will be sinful. Despite this great stress to perform the Haj as soon as one can afford to undertake the journey, many people postpone it for various reasons which are not acceptable in the light of the Shariah. In many instances a person delays the performance of Haj because he does not have sufficient funds to take his wife along as well, though he can afford to perform Haj alone. In this case if he has sufficient funds for the expenses of his own Haj and for the basic needs of his family while he is away, he must proceed for Haj immediately. Sometimes Haj is delayed because one's son or daughter is about to be married soon. Hence the money which should have been spent on the performance of Haj is used instead for lavish wedding feasts and other wasteful, baseless customs. This, however, is not a valid excuse for delaying Haj. Once it is confirmed that one will be going for Haj, the preparation for Haj must commence in earnest. The preparation for Haj is of two categories. One is the easier and less important preparation. This entails acquiring one's passport, visa, and other necessities for the journey. Most are normally fully prepared in this regard. The second and more important preparation is the inner preparation -- the preparation of the heart and soul to imbibe the barakah (blessings) and hidayah (guidance) from the sacred places. Without this preparation the journey of Haj will become just a physical exercise without any substantial spiritual benefit other than the obligation of Haj being discharged. It will become more of a shopping trip and a holiday. Therefore the spiritual preparation is imperative. It is the spiritual preparation that will add to the quality of the Haj. Allah Ta'ala also declares in the Qur'anul-Kareem: "And take your provisions (for the journey of Haj). Certainly the best of provisions is taqwa." The more taqwa one acquires prior to one's departure for Haj, the more one will be able to acquire from the Haj itself. It is the quality of taqwa that will enable one to spend one's time fruitfully. Taqwa will enable one to refrain from sins of the eyes (as well as other sins) right in the Haram Shareef. While enroute to the mubarak lands, or at the airports or at any other place, it is the taqwa that will enable a person to perform his salaah on time. Simply, any person who takes along the provision of taqwa will insha-allah come back as a new person. Otherwise there is a strong possibility that one may waste this tremendous opportunity of changing one's life and returning as a changed person. In order to prepare spiritually, one must read authentic literature which gears one up spiritually to undertake this journey. To this end one must thoroughly read the book "Virtues of Haj" by Sheikul Hadith Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya Saheb (R.A.). Apart from this to condition the heart and generate at least to some extent the fervour of Imaan, before departure one should spend some time out in the path of Allah Ta'ala (at least three days). One should also stay in the company of a Sheikh (spiritual mentor and guide) with whom one can easily relate to and attempt to acquire from him the love of Allah Ta'ala, the constant consciousness of His presence and the reality of taqwa. Also, We should understand the procedure of Haj and all the masaa'il that pertain to it. Without sufficient knowledge of at least the basic masaa'il of Haj one is prone to making errors which will ruin one's Haj. May Allah Ta'ala accept the Haj of the Hujjaj and make it a means of changing their lives for the better. Aameen.

Masjid Umar Bin Khattab-IAM November 2011 Page 5 Youth s Perspective Guidance through respect There was once a fire-worshipper who noticed his son eating during the month of Ramadhaan in the presence of the Muslims. He was infuriated and reprimanded his son, How could you destroy the sanctity of the Muslims during the month of Ramadhaan? After his death, a scholar from the neighborhood saw him in a dream enjoying from the bounties of Jannat. He was quite surprised and asked: Were you not a fire-worshipper? The man replied: Yes, I was. However, as I was about to pass away Allah Ta`ala granted me the good fortune of accepting Islam due to the respect I showed for the month of Ramadhaan. (Nuzhat-ul- Majaalis, p. 201) Lesson: Respect for the distinguishing features and symbols of Islam draws Allah Ta`ala s special mercy and guidance. POEM - Good Deeds Allah loves children who care for others, who do deeds of kindness to sisters and brothers; like lending a hand to somebody hurt, like smiling at him and saying a kind word; like happily sharing with girls and with boys, one's favorite things like books and like toys; like sending flowers to somebody ill, a visit to him would be nicer still; There are many things we can do for each other, to make life happy for our sister and brother. KIDS ARE US By Dr. Mohammad Iqbal Mehboob The topic of this article is about a Hadith related by Abu-Abdullah Jabir, son of Abdullah Al- Ansari(Raziullah Anho)(related by Sahih-Muslim). A man asked Prophet Mohammad (SAW), messenger of Allah (SWT), "Do you think that if I performed all the obligatory (Farad) prayers including Salat, fasting in Ramadan, paying Zakat, performing Haj and believing in Allah (SWT) and His Prophet and also added that if he treated everything which is according to the law of Allah and His Prophet and if he abstained from doing anything which was unlawful or not according to Sharia then will I enter paradise or Jannat? Our Prophet (SAW) said Yes that he will enter Paradise if he performed Farad (obligatory) prayers prescribed by Allah (SWT) and the Prophet (SAW). In the same context, our Prophet was taken to Miraj (Al-Quran Sura Bani Israel) and he was given the gift of fifty times Salat in twenty four hours but with the grace of Allah (SWT), it was reduced to five times daily. As told by our Prophet (SAW), the ujur would still be for fifty times prayers even though it was reduced to five times daily. This was a big generosity shown by Allah (SWT) to his Prophet Mohammad (SAW) and to us. So according to the Hadith, if we just do our duty and perform Farad (obligatory) prayers and deeds, we will, Inshallah, be rewarded Paradise (Janat). This is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to start our Salat five times a day, perform other obligatory deeds and to be good role models for our children and families and teach them to do the same. These may be daily rituals to some, but are orders from Allah (SWT) that need to be followed. By continuing to do these rituals, it becomes part of our daily habits and becomes second nature to us. By following these simple rules, we will, Inshallah, get Paradise.

Page 8 Masjid Umar Bin Khattab-IAM November 2011 Newsletter THE FIRST TEN DAYS OF ZUL HIJJAH The significance of the first ten days of Zul Hijjah 1. Allah has taken oath of ten nights in Surah Al-Fajr. According to the majority of the commentators of Qur an, the nights are those of the (first) ten days of Zul Hijjah. 2. Abdullah Ibn Abbas Radiyallaahu anhu related that the Prophet (SAW) said, "Good deeds performed on other days are not superior to those performed on these (first ten days of Zul Hijjah)." The Companions (RA) inquired, "Not even Jihad?" He replied, "Not even Jihad, except for that person who goes out putting himself and his wealth in danger and does not return with anything." (Bukhãri) 3. Aboo Hurayrah (RA) related that Rasulullah (SAW) said, "On no days is the worship of Allah desired more than in the (first) ten days of Zul Hijjah. The fast of each of these days is equal to the fast of a whole year, and the worship of each of these nights is equal to the worship of Laylatul Qadr." (Tirmizi, Ibne Mãjah) 4. The mother of the believers, Hafsah (RA) reports that Rasulullah (SAW) used to fast the (first) nine days of Zul Hijjah. (Nasã ee, Ahmad, Aboo Dãwood) 5. Abdullah Ibne Umar (RA) related that Rasoolullah (SAW) said, "No days are as weighty with Allah and so liked by Him for good deeds than the first ten days of Zul Hijjah. So on these days increasingly read Subhãnallah, Lã ilãha illallãh, Alhamdulillah and Allahu Akbar." (Musnad Ahmad) Virtues of the Day of Arafat (9th Zul Hijjah) 1. Aaishah (RA) reports that Rasulullah (SAW) said, There is no day in which Allah sets free more souls from the fire of hell than on the day of Arafat. And on that day Allah draws near to the earth and by way of exhibiting His Pride remarks to the angels, What is the desire of these (servants of mine)?" (Muslim) 2. Talhah (RA) reports that Rasulullah (SAW) said, "Apart from the day of the Battle of Badr there is no day on which the Shaytan is seen to be more humiliated, more rejected, more depressed and more infuriated, than on the day of Arafat, and indeed all this is only because of beholding the abundance of descending mercy (on the day) and Allah s forgiveness of the great sins of the servants." (Mishkãt) 3. Aboo Qatãdah Al-Ansãri (RA) narrated that Rasulullah (SAW) was asked about the fast on the day of Arafat. He said, "It compensates for the (minor) sins of the past and the coming year." (Muslim, Tirmizi, Ibne Mãjah) Continued on next page.

Masjid Umar Bin Khattab-IAM November 2011 Page 9 Continued from previous next page Significance of the first ten days of ZUL HIJJAH Night of Eidul Adha The nights of both Eid are described in the Hadith as amongst the great and sacred nights in the Muslim calendar. To remain awake on the nights of Eid and perform ibãdah is a source of great virtue and reward. 1. Aboo Umarah (RA) related that Aaishah (RA) reports that Rasulullah (SAW) said, "Whosoever stays awake and performs Ibadah (worship) on the nights of the two Eid, with hope for abundant reward (from Allah), his heart will not die on the day (i.e. Qiyãmah) when all hearts will be dead." (Targheeb) 2. Mu ãz Ibne Jabal (RA) relates that Rasulullah (SAW) said, "Jannah is Wajib (incumbent) for those who stay awake with the intention of making Ibadah on the following nights: 8th, 9th and 10th of Zul Hijjah, the night of Eidul Fitr and the night of the 15th of Sha bãn." (Targheeb) Virtues of Qurbani Rasulullah Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam said, "There is nothing dearer to Allah during the days of Qurbani than the sacrificing of animals. The sacrificed animal shall come on the Day of Judgement with its horns, hair, and hooves (to be weighed). The sacrifice is accepted by Allah before the blood reaches the ground. Therefore sacrifice with an open and happy heart." (Tirmizi, Ibne Mãjah) Takbirãt of Tashreeq The Takbirãt of Tashreeq are: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Lã ilãha illallãhu wallahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Walil lahil hamd. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no deity besides Allah and Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest and all praises are for Allah only." It is Wajib for every adult Muslim to recite these Takbiraat of Tashreeq audibly once after every Fardh salaah which is performed with Jamaat (congregation) from the Fajr of 9th Zul Hijjah to the Asr of 13th Zul Hijjah (i.e. total of 23 Salaah). Mas alah: It is not wãjib for women and shar ee travellers. But, if they are performing salãh behind an imãm upon whom it is wãjib, then it will become wãjib upon them too. However it is mustahab for them to recite in any case. Mas alah: Women should not say it loudly but softly. Mas alah: Takbeer should be recited immediately after concluding the fardh prayer.

Page 10 Masjid Umar Bin Khattab-IAM November 2011 Newsletter Are you a Ramadan Muslim?/ Life after Ramadhan! Are you a Ramadan Muslim? Are you a Muslim who prayers 5 times a day, and fasts throughout Ramadan, but stops when Eid arrives? Do you do good deeds in Ramadan but return to your sins after Eid? Do you grow the beard (brothers) and wear the hijaab (sisters) when Ramadan arrives, then abandon your obligations as soon as Eid is announced? It s time to wake up from this dream state and realize the reality of our actions. If you are a Muslim who, for example, prayers 5 times a day and yet commits sins, are you really completing your prayer correctly? Allaah, the Most High, says Verily, As-Salat (the prayer) prevents from Al-Fahsha and Al-Munkar... Imaam ibn Katheer said, Abu Al-`Aliyah said, "Prayer has three attributes, and any prayer that contains none of these attributes is not truly prayer: Being done purely and sincerely for Allah alone (Ikhlas), fear of Allah, and remembrance of Allah. Ikhlas makes a person do good deeds, fear prevents him from doing evil deeds, and the remembrance of Allah is the Quran which contains commands and prohibitions.'' Ibn Awn Al-Ansari said: "When you are praying, you are doing good, it is keeping you away from immoral sins and evil wicked deeds and what you are doing is part of the remembrance of Allah which is greater.'' Do not return back to a sinful state. Many Muslims worked very hard and accumulated many good deeds in Ramadan. However, some of these Muslims will return to their evil ways and commits sins (openly and secretly). The effect of this will be the blackening of their hearts and that on the Day of Judgement, they will see all their deeds turn to dust! Imagine watching all the iftar food, all the dates you donated, all the charity, the taraweeh, etc. all your deeds being as large as a mountain, then turning into dust and floating off the scales. It was narrated from Aboo Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) said, When a believer commits sin, a black spot appears on his heart. If he repents and gives up the sin and seeks forgiveness, his heart will be polished. But if (the sin) increases, (the black spot) increases. That is the Raan that Allaah mentions in His Book: Nay! But on their hearts is the Ran (covering of sins and evil deeds) which they used to earn. It was narrated from Thawbaan that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, I certainly know people of my nation who will on the Day of Resurrection with good deeds like the mountains of Tihaamah, but Allaah will make them like scattered dust. Thawban said, O Messenger of Allaah, describe them to us and tell us more, so that we will not become of them unknowingly. He (peace be upon him) said, They are your brothers and from your race, worshiping at night as you do, but they will be people who, when they are alone, transgress the scared limits of Allaah. Allaah, the Most High, says, Leave (O mankind, all kinds of) sin, open and secret. Verily, those who commit sin will get due recompense for that which they used to commit. Beware of even the smallest of bad deeds. It was narrated that Aaishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) said to me, O Aaishah, beware of (evil) deeds that are regarded as insignificant, for they have a pursuer from Allaah (i.e. accountability). Continued on next page.

Masjid Umar Bin Khattab-IAM November 2011 Page 11 Continued from previous next page Are you a Ramadan Muslim? Reflect on all the good work you did this Ramadan. Think of the deeds that you found you can do consistently and brought you closer to Allaah. Plan you days, months, year, to maximize these deeds and reap their benefits. Aboo Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) said, Take only as much as you can do of good deeds for the best of deeds is that which is done consistently, even if it is little. Sheikh Muhammad Sâlih al-munajjid said, After the end of Ramadan, the people are divided into various types, two of the most prominent of which I will describe here. The first types are those whom you see in Ramadan striving hard in worship. You never see them but they are prostrating or standing in prayer, or reading Quraan, or weeping, so much that they remind you of some of the worshipers among the salaf, and you even feel compassion for them because of the intensity of their efforts and striving. Yet hardly has the month ended, before they go back to negligence and committing sin, as if they were prisoners of that worship, so they turn their attention to their desires and become negligent and commit sins which they think will take away their distress and grief. But these poor people forget that sin is the cause of doom, because sins are like war wounds, one of which may turn out to be fatal. How often has sin prevented a person from saying Laa ilaaha ill- Allaah when in the throes of death. After spending this entire month with faith, (reading) Quraan and other acts of worship, these people then backslide, Laa hawla wa laa quwwata illa Billaah (there is no power and no strength except with Allaah). These are the occasional worshippers who only acknowledge Allaah on certain occasions or at times of calamity and distress, then after that there is no more obedience or worship. What a bad habit that is. The worshipper prayed for something that he wanted, and when the matter was done, he neither prayed nor fasted. [Arabic poetry] I wonder what is the point of worshiping for a whole month, if that is going to be followed by a return to dishonorable ways? The second type are those who feel distressed at the departure of Ramadan, because they have tasted the sweetness of being safe from sin, and the bitterness of patience became insignificant to them, because they came to realize the true nature of their weakness and need for their Master (Allaah) and their need to obey Him. They fasted in a true sense and stood in prayer at night out of love, so when they bade farewell to Ramadan, their tears flowed and their hearts were broken. Those among them who were burdened with sin hoped to be freed from sin and ransomed from Hell, and to join the caravan of those who are accepted. Ask yourself, my brother, which of the two groups do you belong to? I ask Allah to accept from us and you our fasting, our prayers and other righteous actions, that our condition after Ramadan be a better one, that the state of our Ummah improves, that we are granted honour and that we truly turn to our Lord Ameen! And It is Only Allaah Who grants success. May Allaah Exalt the mention of His slave and Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him), and render him, his household and companion safe from Evil.
