Message from the Masjid board Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh, All praise to Allah, we are fortunate to take part in the holy month of Ramadan. We pray that all of us have the opportunity to take advantage of the special blessings found only in this month with good health, patience and strength. Ameen. This is a month of patience, a month of forgiveness, and a month to gain Allah s pleasure through increasing our devotion/sincerity in prayers, Quran recitations, Zikr and remembrance of Allah, restraining ourselves from sinful and wasteful activities, and increasing our charitable actions and service to human-kind. One special request is to be mindful of our brothers and sisters and to show excellent manners and behaviors when visiting the Masjid, especially during Ramadan. As Imam Nayef mentioned in a recent speech, it is counter-productive to worship in the Masjid and at the same time inconvenience anyone. In our exuberance to worship, we should not forget about the etiquettes or manners of the Masjid. Alhamdulillah, the Masjid expansion is nearly complete and features a large multipurpose hall/gym and classrooms for Quran/Hifz/Alim courses. The Masjid needs approximately $135,000 to complete this historic expansion. Please continue to be generous in Ramadan and fund this expansion to completion. This is a golden opportunity to share in the blessings of all the Masjid s activities. We would like to thank all the donors, volunteers, and community members that take part in the various Masjid activities. Your efforts are very much appreciated and Insha Allah you will gain the blessings in this life and here-after. AMEEN. Insha Allah, the Masjid will hold special events and Iftar dinners throughout the month of Ramadan and we ask that the community joins in these activities. Our website and list are easy ways to find out about events at the Masjid. Website: Jazak Allah Khair. Board of Directors, Masjid Umar bin Khattab/IAM. (Sahih Al-Bukhari) The Prophet (SAW) said that Allah the Majestic and the Exalted said All actions a human being does are for himself except fasting. It is done for my sake so I will give a reward for it and the reward of good deeds is multiplied 10 times. (Bukhari & Muslim) Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (SAW) said, "Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.)" (Sahih Al-Bukhari) It is reported that The Prophet (SAW) was naturally the most generous of people and he used to be more generous than ever in the month of Ramadan. (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
2 Page 2 Imam s Corner: by Mufti Nayef Patel - Commonly asked Ramadan Question In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful. Q: Is taking a meal before commencing a fast (suhur) necessary in order for a fast to be valid? A: No, Suhur is not necessary. However, it is a virtuous act of Sunnah that should not be missed unnecessarily. Q: What time does Suhur begin? A: One can take Suhur any time after midnight, but it is more advisable to take it in the latter hours of the night, preferably just before the break of true dawn (al-fajr al-sadiq). Q: Is an intention for fasting necessary and when should one make the intention (niyyah) for the fast of Ramadhan? A: The intention for fasting is necessary but very simple: It is to know in your heart that you will fast that day. It is valid to have this intention any time from Maghrib the night before up to the Islamic midday of the actual day of fasting, for current Ramadhan fasts and voluntary fasts. The Islamic midday is half way between the beginning of Fajr and Maghrib times. (al-fatawa al-hindiyya) Q: What is the difference between a Qadha and Kaffara? A: Qadha (makeup) means to keep another fast in order to make up for the fast which was invalidated, whilst Kaffara (expiation) means to perform an act to expatiate the sin of having broken a fast. Q: In what way is a Kaffara fulfilled? A: A Kaffara may be given in the following two ways: 1) Fasting for two months consecutively without missing a single fast, 2) Feeding sixty poor people. It should be remembered that if one has the ability to fast then one cannot adopt the second method; rather, one will have to fast for sixty days continuously. Q: Does an injection invalidate one s fast? A: No, it does not invalidate one s fast, although it is better to avoid taking injections whilst fasting unnecessarily. Q: Does taking out blood or a blood test invalidate one s fast? A: No, a blood test does not invalidate the fast, as it is merely the taking out of blood. However, it will be disliked if it could weaken one from being able to maintain the fast. Q: Does smoking invalidate one s fast? A: Yes, it does invalidate one s fast. (Ramadhan is a good time to quit smoking). Q: Is it allowed to use an Asthma Pump during the Fast? A: If one has a genuine medical need for an asthma pump that cannot be otherwise fulfilled, then it would be permitted to use it. However, it would break the fast and require that the fast be made up later (Qadha). This is because anything that has a perceptible body breaks the fast if it enters the body through a normal channel. Q: Can one fast whilst travelling? A: Yes, one may fast while travelling. However one should not burden oneself if the journey is long and difficult, for in such situations it is advisable not to fast. Q: Does one have to perform the Qadha fasts immediately after Ramadhan? A: No, however it is recommended to complete the missed fasts of Ramadhan as soon as possible. Q: When can a sick person break his/her fast on the opinion of a doctor? A: When a competent Muslim doctor says that if he/she continues fasting, it will bring danger to his/her life or severely affect the health, then in such a situation it will be permitted to break one s fast. One will not be liable for a Kaffara but will only have to make up for the fast (Qadha).
3 Page 3 Masjid Update & News Masjid Expansion Update These projects will need continuous funding. This is a great time to donate and share in the blessings of this expansion. Architect Rendition Narrated by Abu Sa'id al-khudri, The Prophet (SAWS) said: A man giving a dirham as sadaqah (charity) during his life is better than giving one hundred dirhams as charity at the moment of his death. Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 2860 Narrated by Abdullah bin Umar, Allah's Messenger (SAWS) said, "Envy is not permissible except of two men. A man whom Allah has given the knowledge of the Book and he recites it during the hours of the night, and a man whom Allah has given wealth, and he spends it in charity during the night and the hours of the day." Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith Narrated by Asma, Allah's Messenger (SAWS) said, "Give (in charity) and do not give reluctantly lest Allah should give you in a limited amount; and do not withhold your money lest Allah should withhold it from you." Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith Alhamdulillah, Phase 1, 2, and 3 have been of the expansion project (excavation, foundation, underground plumbing, outer shell, roof foundation, roof, heating/cooling, classrooms, windows/doors, interior hall/gym, flooring, etc) have been successfully completed. $135,000 remains to complete the project. This includes finishing the exterior, which includes fencing, parking and landscaping. Insha Allah, if we receive these funds, the expansion project will be completed by end of Summer Donate to the masjid on a monthly basis by: 1. Check-o-matic donations. 2. Setting up online payment via the bank. 3. Donate using Google checkout, through our masjid website: Insha Allah, we hope that every single community member will consider setting up monthly donations to the masjid via one of the methods noted above. 4 Page 4 Youth s Perspective KIDS ARE US By Dr. Mohammad Iqbal Mehboob In one Hadith narrated by Hazrat Ibne-Umer (RA) and Aisha (RA), Prophet Mohammad (SAW) said that Jibrael (AS) kept on recommending that I respect and treat my neighbors well until I thought that he would order me to treat them as my heirs or include the neighbor in the inheritance (Dawood and Tirmize). According to this Hadith, the Prophet has said that the neighbor is entitled to some rights from you. The Prophet referred to some people and said He is not a Momin/Muslim three times. Ashab asked, Who? The Prophet replied that you will not enter Jannah if your neighbor is not safe from you and you cause hardships or trouble for your neighbor. Our Prophet heard about a lady who used to pray Tahajud and other salat, but her neighbor was unhappy with her due to her mischief and evils. The Prophet said she would not go to Jannah. Praying and doing other good deeds will not guarantee that we can enter Jannah if you treat your neighbor poorly. A neighbor deserves your kindness, for you to be gracious and friendly to them and their families including parents and children. We should not quarrel with our neighbors and have disputes over small things such as cutting the grass or throwing garbage in each other s yard. We should not argue with them about our religion. Actions speak louder than words. Show your neighbor kindness, mercy and compassion. That will go a long way. According to the Quran (Surat Nisa), Allah (SWT) says to Pray to Allah (SWT) and do not have any partners with Allah (SWT) and be good to your parents and other close relatives and also good to your neighbors near or far. The Quran and the Hadith proves that the role of the neighbor is important and we should pay attention to it. My prayer is that we should be so nice to our neighbors that we can change the thinking of all the public in this country that Muslims are good hearted and kind people and that is part is being a good Muslim. WordSearch It is our duty to look after our neighbors. If your neighbor is hungry, feed them. If they are happy, share with them in their happiness. If they are sick, visit them during their illness. If they need money, help them in their time of need. These are some of the duties upon you as a Muslim. According to Imam Hassan Busri, a neighbor is 40 houses in each direction, so approximately 160 houses around you are considered your neighbors. Once, Hazrat Aisha (RA) asked our Prophet, Where do I start for my neighborhood? The Prophet told her to start with the house closest to her house. Here in United States we live in a region where most of our neighbors are non-muslim. Considering all the negative publicity Muslims are receiving in the wake of recent events, it is our responsibility to portray and display the image of a good Muslim. We can also encourage our children to show compassion to our neighbors and their families.
