History and context Since 2008, the CIMPA organizes scientific activities in the domain of mathematics and its applications in cooperation with the Iraqi universities. A group of workshops and intensive courses take place in every year in different universities in the Kurdistan region of Iraq with participations of a lot of researchers from different cities of Iraq. Also a CIMPA West Asia Mathematical Schools (WAMS) took place in Erbil during 2014, two WAMS during 2015 and one in WAMS in 2016.This school is the fifth one, supported by CIMPA and organized in, Kurdistan Region/Iraq. This research school is based on the Topics in algebraic number theory and Diophantine approximation. The aim of this WAMS was to introduce students and non-experts the Diophantine Approximation, Mahler measure of polynomials; a Gaussian period is a certain kind of sum of roots of unity (cyclotomy) and some description of Galois Theory. Participation The participants came from different cities and different universities of Iraq and the rate of women participants was 44.26%. The total number of participants were 61 mathematicians, beginners and advanced (see annex for the list of participants), including 43 from Mathematics department in three colleges in which are Science, Education and Basic Education; and the others were from different universities in Kurdistan Region and in Iraq.
